One of the easiest ways to get great splash photos is by back lighting the shot. In this video Gavin Hoey shows you exactly how it’s done. However, if you are photographing something solid, back lighting will result in a silhouette and that’s where a combination of front light and a bit of Photoshop skills will come in very handy.

I really love how you took the mystery out of what looked like on the outside that you needed years and years of Photoshop experience! What I like most about your teaching style is your unintimidating way of presenting the material and taking us from camera to the finished project.
4 years forward it is still relevant. Thank you Gavin :)
It's always a pleasure to watch your videos!
Gavin is officially my favorite 😊
Very helpful tip about when to take the picture(after the splash).I've always tried to time it at the same time.Thank you!
A maestro at Work walking us through the entire creative process..Bravo!!
Excellent tutorial yet again.
Bookmarked, Saved, Backuped, RSSed and REMEMBERED! This video, albeit kinda silly with the subject, is still SUPER useful. Definitely coming back to this soon!
Your videos always inspire me to get out and try something new. Thank you!
Once again Gavin you're an inspiration! Thank you.
Impossible not to like each and every one of your videos. This one is 7 years old and still amazes me. Your minimalistic approach really makes a difference, and your creativity on display is refreshing and encouraging. Thank you.

Hello Gavin,

need your advice. where did you buy these glass ice cubes? Any ideas?
Thank you.

Hi Gavin,
Based on your 'fish splash' video, I followed the link to Adorama and purchased the Flashpoint Lion speedlight. Just thought you would want to know when your marketing efforts have paid off. Thanks for the great tutorials. I enjoy yours the most of all the Adorama 'trainers'.
Chris
Excellent video, subscribed.
what if i'm using a speedlite flash? what are the settings should i choose? however, I have a crop sensor camera not a full frame one. Thanks in advance mr. Hoey! you're the best.
Thanks so much
So awesome!!!!

Gevin Hello, thank you for your video. They are very inspiring. I would like to ask what material is used on the plate under a glass sphere? Thank´s
Amazing
Super video👍
Good info. Thanks.
Excellent video as always. Might try using a shower curtain as a back drop as it is made for getting wet. Thumbs up!
Perfect!!!
Great tutorial, now I hope Santa brings me the flash setup for Christmas!
Loved this!! Thanks Gavin!.... This might be something to do on a rainy or when you don't want to go outside to shoot. Well done! Are any of you out there still able to click on the Green Adorama banner when it comes up? I remember I used to be able to.. but not lately.. I like to look at the prices and specs. Thanks.
Nice! Good idea using the powerful flash on low power; it negates the need for hypersync.
P.S. One of my favorite subscribe buttons! :)
Amazingggg.
brilliant Gavin - Enough said.
I am using CS 6 but I don't have the Camera Raw filter in Photoshop to go back to raw as you did Gavin. Is it a simple plug in? Your videos are great by the way I enjoy them very much and tell all my photography friends about you.
Splash photography made easy 👌
love it, i like that small background , where do i get it?
Great video! Could you let me know where I can find that tracing white paper please?
Nice video. using a gel for the back flash would have been nice to see.
Very informative
Sir Gavin is a great teacher
Nice video, thanks you :)
Very cool
Gavin is pretty good!
Great~
Hi Gavin
In a previous video involving water (don't remember which one) you used a black shirt to enhance the outlines of the glass and the ice. And that's I've learned.
In this case you have a black wall. But you've also used a light blue shirt. Because of that blue reflections appear in the left side of the pictures.
Not very apparent in the final result though...
Was that considered or just happened?
great video Gavin as normal ,but what photoshop are you using
Great splash video, I would love to do something like this myself, shame it was spoiled with faking the fish in Photoshop.
Thankyou
Wow
Good job bos
I want the download link of photoshop version which Sir Gavin Hoey is Using can u please help me?
The trouble with Gavin's videos is I always give them a thumbs up even before I start watching... Make a bad one for a change! :-p
I love your vids but man! You need to win the lottery to have all the goodies you use. Fingers crossed!
Gavin, QQ can you tell me what material are you using as translucent background?
nothing to say about this Man. Supper
Gavin is the BEST!!!!! I own the flashpoint 360, great light, how do I get it to sync with my Nikon SB600?He said his were on the same radio frequency. How to do please!!! Thx.I did purchase an infrared sensor, but it doesn't work all the time.
+Gary Stanzak Both flashes are from Flashpoint and both use the same radio trigger system. Your Nikon SB600 wouldn't work in the same way with the Flashpoint radio triggers however you can set the Streaklight 360 to Optical Slave mode (S1 or S2) so when you fire the SB600 in your usual way the Streaklight 360 will also fire.
Should we use a polarizer while doing this?
cool
i like it oh yeah, josss
I need help, i have no idea where to get such a plate
What photo editor??
Hi Gavin do you have any info on what the flash duration of the steaklights is at each power setting? I refer to the higher power ones not the speedlights
+Peter Bennett According to the technical blurb flash duration is around 1/300th sec at full power and 1/10,000th sec at minimum power
hi gavin, i was wondering where i can buy a flashpoint streaklight 360 in the UK? ive tried googling but only getting US stores
+Cal Rec The Streetlight is a re-branded Godox AD360, which are available from Amazon, ebay and a few others.
Awesome video. What type of stand/bracket is the flash on? Can it mount with an umbrella or softbox?
+quitefranklybb Gavin is using the Flashpoint Autostand (www.adorama.com/FPLS7AS.html) with the Flashpoint Universal Swivel Umbrella Holder (www.adorama.com/FPUSH.html). Thanks
+Adorama 15.5 lb capacity; very nice!
quitefranklybb
Thanks Gavin for the video, why did you switch from Canon to this camera?
Sub'd great video!
Great splash tutorial with acceptable effort. Regards Marco Wydmuch
u kept ur picture set up in mono chrome or anything else
Out of curiosity...why you don't use a remote?
good question
He uses a remote many times in other videos. In a small space its easy to get to lights. Maybe beginners need to see that its ok not to have every techie tool .
Why did he use tracing paper instead of a softbox
It did not freeze completely my friend..
I have 2 =Metz f52
