TR&CI 108: You're (Possibly) Doing Extra Combats Wrong - The Timing Of Taking Extra Combat Phases

- In this episode of Tough Rules & Cool Interactions, I will be talking about taking extra Combat Phases. I see players all the time casting spells or triggering abilities to take additional Combat Phases in games all the and for a lot of them they have very specific wording for when you get them and also what happens when you do. I hope that this video will help to look out for these very specific wordings on the effects for the cards that you run in your own decks or if you play against someone that makes an error included in this episode.
Intro 0:00
Relentless Assault 0:42
Isshin and Combat Triggers 2:50
Moraug and Landfall 5:33
Enters Tapped and Attacking 8:10
Conclusion 8:51

So specific rules citation in today's episode. Do any of you all play Darktide? That game is a whole lot of fun, I've been playing the tier 5 stuff with friends and tonight I'm going to suggest we do the even harder missions. Oh boy!

Just sent this to my playgroup and blew their minds.
I hope that it helps you all out in future games.
Oh wow, that Morague thing. We've been doing that wrong for a while now.
Yup, funny enough, The Command Zone just did a video today of Jimmy talking about his decks and for one of them he mentioned that guy and how he's confusing. Perfect timing.
I'm not a fighty person, so I'm not usually running these effects but I often have to remind players at the tables I'm in of these very same things when they play them. Useful video, as always!
Funny enough, a lot of my decks are very combat heavy, but I just don't typically run extra combats. I do have a Magar of the Magic Strings deck and since I'm hitting with tiny little 3/3s I do actually run a Moraug in there.
That wording on Relentless Assault, played that card for years and I thought it just meant after your next main phase. Thanks!
You and many, many, many other players. Very common thing.
@@ThisIsACommanderChannelyeah, that's really weird wording on relentless assault. I never noticed that before on that card. Why don't/didn't they errata that to having an "if" in there somewhere?
@@joedoe7572 I know they try to change things as little as possible, especially if something results in a change to how it actually does work. But I feel like adding in an "if" wouldn't really be a function change and make it more clear. Who knows.
Not sure why, but I figured there were a lot more than 29 of these. I guess I just see the few there are in so many games that it feels like there are more.
I did pretty basic words to search for, just "additional" and "combat" which comes up with a little over 50 results but I hand counted the ones that actually do this effect from there and I got 29. Hopefully I counted it up right.
29 sounds like an awful lot for such a specific and over the top effect to me.
@@irreleverent Yeah, looks like a lot of the extra combat stuff has come out in the last 2-3 years. A recent explosion.
I never thought much about the untapping aspect. Pretty sure my playgroup has screwed this up a lot. Like 20+ times.
That tricks up people a whole lot.
Ok this is epic!
This was a really helpful episode. I see a lot of extra combats in my groups and I'm quite sure we've handled a lot of them wrong now.
I hope it has helped you out in your future games.
I learned about these issues quite a while ago, when I wanted to make a Velomachus Lorehold extra combat deck. There's only two that Velomachus can cast and benefit from, since the rest require being cast in the main phase.
Also, for that final issue of entering tapped and attacking, there is an additional wrinkle that wasn't mentioned. Even if you have a way to give mass haste, if the effect giving an extra combat specifies that you "untap all creatures that attacked this turn", such as Fury of the Horde, you won't untap the ones put onto the battlefield tapped and attacking, since they never attacked.
Good point!
You know, I've only played against Velomachus once and it's a shame. He's a really cool dude with Flying, Vigilance, and Haste. At least with the Vigilance, you should be okay with some of the extra combats that fail when it comes to their untap aspect, your Commander will always be untapped.
Planning on building one of these decks. Thank you for showcasing all these pitfalls
For sure. Happy to help out. Who you leaning towards for your Commander?
Still deciding between a few (haven't bought all the pieces yet.) Originally had Aurelia the Warleader, since I already have that piece, but moved her into the 99 and swapped for Tajic, Blade of the Legion. Still might swap for Aurelia, Exemplar of Justice or splash black and with Isshin, Two Heavens as One.
Raiyuu, Storm's Edge is another consideration. As you can tell, still in the early stages.
@@BurgerDrawz Dang man, Tajic, Blade of the Legion would get crazy big in a multi-combats deck.
I noticed this issue in my voltron deck as I considered Karlach and Ryusei, since then I have taken an effort to be mindful of my multiple combat enablers and not put my eggs in one basket.
Man, each time I read Karlach, it surprises me that he also grants First Strike. What a powerful Triggered Ability.
1. SHE is a total queen in that deck, and quickly wins games the turn she comes down, definitely a lieutenant in the 99
2. On the notion of Moraug and Hearth&Home, switch it out for Forge& Frontier & you'll be a step in the right direction. Because growth spiral+ on an equipment is fair magic!
@@byronsmothers8064 I've been trading for Sword of F&Fs over the last couple months, finally have a few in my decks. I wasn't too hyped about it at first but it's been growing on me. And for sure, it's fantastic in a Moraug deck.
Bonus rulings question: Would Relentless Assault untap creatures brought out by effects like Kaalia's
Ah, really good question. While they are 'attacking' at that time, they never 'attacked' as that requires them to have been declared as an attacker. So no, Relentless Assault will not untap them, but a card like Aetherize will bounce them back to their owner's hand.
@@ThisIsACommanderChannel Noo that was meant for the other viewers - I was imitating you since you gave extra rulings puzzles in the last video i watched. Haha JK - thanks for confirming that for me
@@ManiacalMan Ha! Dang, you actually had me going, I was like, "oh crap, I'm sorry!" I love doing the bonus questions. I think one of the reasons I like them so much is a get a chance to read the replies and see what people think. While I do set up the scenarios in the primary focus of the video, I like getting to try and trick people in the bonus questions.
@@ThisIsACommanderChannel yeah it is fun and rewarding to get it right after getting thrown into the deep end with an interaction that might come up in a real game
This might be a commander channel
Maybe. Just maybe...
Heh, you know, I think you're onto something.
Sooo if i understand right, Moraug can give you multiple extra combat phases if you can put down more than one land during your second main phase?
Yup. And your creatures will untap at the beginning of each one
Yup, if you don't have Vigilance, as long as you trigger him during your Post-Combat Main Phase, it will grant you multiple additional Combat Phases and his untap effect will let you keep swinging in each of those extra ones. With no Vigilance, if you do it during your Pre-Combat Main Phase, you'll tap down during your first Combat Phase (the extra one given by Moraug) and then during your 2nd Combat Phase still be tapped down.
@@ThisIsACommanderChannel well, if you trigger landfall three times in your pre-combat main phase, then you'll get three extra combat phases before your regular combat phase, and at the beginning of each of those extra ones your creatures will untap. But they won't untap after that for your regular combat phase
@@joedoe7572 Correct. It's 'best' if you can trigger him in Post-Combat Main Phase just to get that extra bit of attack, but if you can win with the X amount of extra combats before that last normal one, then have at it.
Fix: play boros and things like 'angel's triumph' or 'always watching' or 'brave the sands'
Do you mean Angel's Trumpet?
Oh for sure, things that give Vigilance in Commander are so often overlooked but it's an ability that puts in a whole lot of work.
@@joedoe7572 probably
Any plans to make some commander gameplay videos?
I really, really do one day hope to. If the channel can keep growing via my TR&CI series, then maybe one day I'll be able to dedicate the time to it to make those videos. I have so much that I want to do with this channel but time is something that is limited, but if this channel ever gets to a point that it generates enough money to pay for an editor, then I would love to do that. I'm not a pro editor, so the time it takes me just to make my simple little 5-10 minute videos is around 6+ hours, so to make videos closer to an hour in length... oh my.
@@ThisIsACommanderChannel keep it up, your channel is great and people love it. I would love to see it happen one day!
Wow, that's a lot of time. They always look great though.
The gameplay doesn't need to have special effects. It can be simple video without too much editing
@@joedoe7572 Yeah, I would want to keep it pretty simple. I love watching the CommanderVS guys and their videos are really simple. Not too many camera angles. I would hope to be able to show the cards in a larger view for people watching so they don't have to know all the cards or struggle to read them, but I could start smaller and not show the cards in an individual feed. Just pure gameplay.
