Mel Blount Ultimate NFL Career Highlights

- It is not often that a player is so dominant at his position that the very rules of the game had to be changed. Mel Blount was perhaps the most physical Cornerback to ever play the game, with a style of play so violent that the "Mel Blount Rule" had to be instituted in 1974 for matchups against him to remain competitive. Even after this rule change though, Blount proved that he was as technically sound in coverage as any, even when unable to rely on his size and strength alone, accruing 57 interceptions over his 14-year career with the Steelers, en route to 4 Super Bowl Championships.

This video shows football the way it is suppose to be played. The NFL used to be rough and tough MEN played it. It was a collision sport!!!! They knocked each other into next week. It was brutal and only the strong survived! Mel was not the biggest, nor the fastest. BUT he was damn good!!!! Pay attention to his accomplishments at 4:53. Mel mugged the receiver. He had great vision and anticipation. He was a ball hawk! He has several super bowl rings -- 4 total....... He was part of some of the best teams ever!!! A true treat to watch!!!!

Lambert played middle LB at 6'4.200 lbs, Blount played DB at 6'4,220 and he hit and covered like a mack track, the GOAT

Blount listed at 205 Lambert at 220 but they looked about the same size on the field. They both probably played at 210. Lambert was skinny for a linebacker and I suspect his weight was rounded up. His legs look like toothpicks and Blount was the perfect physical specimen

Funny thing is that the Mel Blount rule was one of the primary rule changes that further opened the passing game up. Blount’s receiver teammates benefited greatly from that rule change 😂

As a person who played football my entire life especially at DB.. you can tell the psychological effect he had on the ppl he covered. Look how they don’t even go for the ball when he is around even shows some that are more worried about Blount and hitting him back than catching the ball. That’s what I love about competition, you don’t have to be the best at everything, sometimes if you just have that dog in you it’ll scare weaker men and prevent them from performing at their highest level. All while you eat em for breakfast. 💯✊🏽🦾

I don't like the debate between he and Deion, apples to oranges, but I will agree he was the best shutdown corner ever. It's hard to truly understand his greatness because the passing rules at the time allowed for contact after 5 yds. He was so much bigger and stronger than most receivers of his day and the qb's he faced couldn't hold a candle to the qb's in the 90s. Also you have to take into account Chuck Knoll and the Steel Curtain, the combination of the two made it easy for 47, but when you watch him on film it's easy to see why there is a debate. Im my estimation, Deion deserves the nod he had an inferior coach in Glanville, and teams flat out would not throw to his side, plus he was faster.
I would love to see Mel Blount against Jerry Rice, Michael Irvin, Randy Moss, Terrell Owens, etc.

Deion was more talented. But Blount was a more complete player. Tackled and hit. Deion was the best cover corner ever but he didnt like tackling.

For perspective, he was a little bigger than Lambert. No cheap shots or showboating. All around the best at his position.
If you look at his accolades and the plays he made he looks eerily similar to Jalen Ramsey. Both violent, physical corners that love to press and don’t have the best ball skills but will break up or knock out passes and get opportunistic interceptions. Both 2 time All Pros and 5 time pro bowlers(currently). Jalen is the Modern Mel Blount
