Uyghurs Who Fled China Now Face Repression in Pakistan

  • The US has officially designated the Chinese government’s brutal crackdown of Uyghur Muslims as genocide. But suppression of Uyghur people doesn’t stop at China’s border - Beijing’s ongoing “One Belt One Road” project threatens Uyghurs in neighboring countries like Pakistan.
Mohammed Umer is an Uyghur activist who operates an underground railroad in Pakistan, smuggling persecuted Muslims into other countries. His work is becoming more difficult as China invests billions of dollars into the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), a series of infrastructure projects that connect the two countries.
For all the promises of CPEC to transform Pakistan’s economy, some groups see these developments as a threat and have mounted a violent campaign of resistance.
Producer-Director Brent E. Huffman traveled to Pakistan several times in the past few years to produce this film with grant assistance from both the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting and the Buffet Institute for Global Studies.

@@kapilsethia9284, the main tension between East and West Pakistan was NOT language or ethnicity but economic and political disparity.
Basically even though East Pakistan provided a large portion to overall Pakistan's economy, not much was spent in developing East. Political tension because East Pakistanis were very under-represented in Pakistani Military and Government. I think only 10% of Pakistani military was Bengali, even though Bengalis were about 50% of total population. And then when Bengali Awami League Party won 1970 election, President Yahya Khan did not let Awami League take control, hence making Bengalis believe West Pakistanis don't like them.
The 1970 Bhola Cyclone disaster also played a role.
NOTE: Saying this as a Bangladeshi myself, so I know the overall history. Btw, this is a very oversimplifed version, actually it is more complex but more or less these are the main causes.

I only hate Western governments. Governments everywhere are corrupt nowadays. The invasion of Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya were disasters that profited defense contractors like Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman which made tens of billions of dollars. According to Business Insider, US politicians received $20 million in "donations" from arms manufacturers. One of their investors was Michele Flournoy. She was the woman who advised Obama to invade Libya! So she made millions off of that! Then we have the Wikileaks scandal too.
But one thing that I will always admire in the West, in particular America, is how their government is separated from the media, unlike in Iran, China, Russia, etc.
Often times US media goes against the narrative of their governments, e.g. Saudi arms deal/Yemen War during the Trump-Era, Iraq war crimes during the Bush-Era, Libya war crimes during the Obama Era.
It was Western newspapers like El Pais (Spain) who exposed the Abu Ghraib war crimes in Iraq or BBC (Britain) who publicized the Kunduz Hospital Strike.
Sometimes they are too liberal for me, but hey, there's no such thing as a perfect media outlet.

Pakistan is in a hard position honestly, along with Imran Khan. On one hand Pakistan usually stands up for muslims worldwide, but their country is heavily impoverished and they need the funds and economic growth that china is offering them. So for Imran he kinda has to choose between standing with the Uyghers and calling out china, or helping his nations economic growth and people (granted this whole thing could just be a ploy for china to gain more control). This whole situation is horrible though, and the fact that they have neighbors spying on them and reporting their activities is so disgusting. Im in no way standing up for china or Imran's stance or anything, just acknowledging the difficult position Pakistan and Imran are in.

It contains everything we need to be proper Muslims and worship Allah. You’ve never even read a verse of it and yet you are out here claiming that Islam is evil, Islam is violent, such and such. I know nothing about Christianity, but do you see me going around calling people out for believing in someone that was a mere human the son of god? No. I’ll respect whatever all you believe in and it seems you all can’t do the same because of the news you hear on tv rather than trying to learn what Islam truly is about.
