"The first thing they asked me was to take off my clothes… They put me in the cell with the drug addicts and with the killers and they beat me", says Abduweli Ayup, a Uighur who alleges he was tortured and raped while detained in China. Abduweli is one among a growing number of China’s Muslim population who claim to have been abused under the government’s controversial “re-education” programme. Experts estimate one million people are being held in detention centres in China's Xinjiang region; a figure denied by Chinese authorities. They say "vocational training centres" are preventing "religious extremism", educating Uighurs in China's culture, language and laws and providing job training. But more than a dozen Uighurs interviewed by 101 East tell harrowing tales of torture, starvation and sexual abuse. Even outside the country, Uighur Muslims are far from safe. For the many Muslims who have fled to Turkey, the future is uncertain; Uighurs say the Chinese embassy in Turkey is refusing to renew their passports, making it impossible to find work and heightening fears of deportation.

I took the time to watch the whole video. I don’t know if I am stupid or not because I really have difficulty making sense out of it. 1/ The guy called himself Abduweli. He first appeared in the video saying he was a teacher teaching local language. He got arrested because the local language is banned and he got arrested. And later in the video he said he was a writer and a scholar ??? 2/ To my knowledge, teacher in China no matter where he is, he can speak his dialect and teach in his own dialect freely. They don’t get arrested. Hong Kong for example could still write complicated form of Chinese and speak Cantonese in School. Nobody get arrested. 3/ People has to understand that learning Mandarin is important to understand what’s going on in the country and get a reasonable job with good pay. This is common sense ! Do you expect a Chinese living in Nova Scotia Canada can survive without knowing English / French ? So learning Mandarin is for their own good unless you don’t want a future for your kids and family and continue to stay in poverty. This is why I think the video is misleading and confusing. And I am also surprised to see people justify and sympathize this complaint on Mandarin education? 4/ Abduweli was detainted in prison and I am surprised to hear that he said he is abused by killers and drug addicts instead of political prisoners ??? He probably forget those were political camps for re-education. He probably forget his script. Therefore, for some reasons I don’t trust what he said. 5/ it seems to me that the video want to convey a message saying that over one million Uyghurs are detained for no reason. And one of the actor ( oops sorry ) said that Chinese government want to destroy them. There is always a motive for doing something. I don’t see how can they justify their statement. I recently read the whole population in Xing Jiang province is about 8 million. If we deduct the elder and children under 18, maybe the active population is about at the most say 2/5 which is about 3.2 millions. According to this logic in approx. 8 years, this 3.2 population will go to prison twice !! 7/ I don’t know how those people in the video fled to Turkey so easily, and with passport ?? Why did the Chinese government give them passport in the first place ?? If you grand somebody a passport and I don’t see why there is a problem with renewing it ? Even if you have so many questions which I will try to get to, understand that this is a real thing. I have met Uighur people inside China, and Han Chinese who have confirmed this happens. They say they do this stuff to remove terrorist thoughts.
Abduweli is a writer and scholar who opened up a school to teach the local language Uighur. In China, every area/ town/ district has their own dialect. In Hong Kong and Shanghai, it's Cantonese or a variation and in Xinjiang, it's the Uighur language. There's differ drastically from Mandarin so they're forced to learn Mandarin as part of school curriculum. And that's normal. But in Xinjiang, they want you to completely stop using Uighur, they want the language and culture demolished as it has Islamic roots.
The issuance of passports is questionable as its not the first time that passports have been given after a person has been in these camps. Also if you know and understand the CCP, you'd understand that they don't believe in religion at all. It's not only Muslims that are monitored. Even Christians and Jews here are watched. When signing a contract to work in China, you have to sign that your religious activities will not affect politics and if so, you will be dealt with by the government. The lady who fled to Turkey felt unsafe in her country coz a government that could strip her nationality for a year, could easily find her after them being the ones to issue her passport back to her, and claim her to be Chinese again. Simply, she's scared and took extra measures. After all that torture, wouldn't you?
And for the spy guy. To prove that you value the CCP more than anything, you first have to prove your loyalties by reporting on those closest to you. That's simple. Else he'd be the one tortured and charged for treason. Remember to the CCP, law is first. China is first. Patriotism is above all.
