Talk Show host Jim Dunbar receives a mysterious phone call from a man claiming to be the Zodiac Killer and asking to speak with attorney Melvin Belli (Brian Cox). They are trying to keep him on the line while inspectors Dave Toschi (Mark Ruffalo) and Bill Armstrong (Anthony Edwards) attempt to trace the call.

What’s the Zodiac movie about?
Based on the true story of the notorious serial killer and the intense manhunt he inspired, Zodiac is a superbly crafted thriller from top director David Fincher. Featuring an outstanding ensemble cast led by Jake Gyllenhaal, Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo and Chloë Sevigny, Zodiac is a searing and singularly haunting examination of twin obsessions: one man's desire to kill and another's quest for the truth. On July the 4th, 1969, the evening of the independence day, two young adults are killed by gun shots in the cities of Benicia and Vallejo in California. A man then calls local authorities and declares having done the crime. The presumed killer, nicknamed Zodiac, accompanies his claims with a riddle. Robert Graysmith (Gyllenhaal), a young newspaper cartoonist, sees his life change when he starts investing his time in decrypting the serial killer’s puzzle.

@@constipatedparker5879 They’re all inspired by actual crimes. Definitely mostly the Zodiac - three things come to mind, the line you’re speaking of, the first cipher was definitely reminiscent of the Zodiac, as well as the way he got the guy from Church.

All we have is a snippet from the reporting on this afterwards and it cuts off after “Sam” says “I don’t want to be hurt.” You can find the transcript of what was said online if you search Melvin Belli and Sam.

The 340 cipher that's unquestionably from the real zodiac was cracked 2 years ago. In it he specifically says "That wasn't me on the TV show. I'm not afraid of the gas chamber". If you're interested the main guy who solved the 340 is David Oranchak and he has a CZcams channel that discusses all of the zodiac ciphers in detail.
@@freebee8221 I'd even go far enough to say there's very compelling reasons to believe Allen wasn't the zodiac.
In real life, they weren't able to trace the call on this day, but the same caller began to call the lawyer's house, and a trace eventually revealed it to be a crank caller from a mental hospital. The movie shows Graysmith hearing from the lawyer's housekeeper that Zodiac called the lawyer's house on December 18, but this was a fabrication. Zodiac never called the lawyer at all.
2:13 is the scariest moment in this film... even beyond the basement scene.

What I hate to think about is not only the innocent victims of the zodiac, but the detectives who spent their whole lifetime feeling like they had come up short and failed to get their guy, even though they exhausted every possible lead. I try to understand people, give the benefit of the doubt and live my life with love. But I have nothing but hate and resentment in my heart when it comes to the zodiac killer.

They traced it back to a patient in a mental hospital, it wasn’t really Z. The Z340 cipher proved it after they solved it recently.
