  • Take a peek behind the scenes as ESO Principal Bassoonist Bianca Chambul walks through the steps to make a double reed in this six-part video series.
This segment covers how to turn a mummy into a reed that is ready to be trimmed. You’ll see how a formed tube is held in place using wires and glue, and how it takes on the more characteristic shape of reeds as we know them.
“In North America, it is standard practice for bassoonists to make their own reeds if they are pursuing an orchestral career. While a challenging task, developing this skill gives each player the flexibility to craft reeds for their comfort level, playing style, and instrument in order to meet the demands of playing in a professional ensemble. A good reed is essential during high-pressure performance situations.
“I started creating these videos last June and finished in November. This project took much longer than I anticipated, and I am excited to finally share it. Each episode outlines the steps of individual stages in the reed-making process, which is based on the Herzberg/Kamins school of thought.
“I hope you find them helpful and interesting. Please remember that this is only one of many approaches to making a reed. In the words of Benjamin Kamins, ‘Trim your reeds for response and intonation, and do not neglect your fundamentals.’ Thank you for joining me on my journey through this six-part series.” - Bianca Chambul
