- A song so dear to many people, but especially Albertans, we are elated to share this video of Four Strong Winds, one of Canada’s most iconic pieces of music, in celebration of the inaugural Alberta Day. This video recording of Four Strong Winds by the legendary Ian Tyson and arranged for orchestra by Albertan composer, Claude Lapalme, is a beautiful tribute to our province. The piece has become a staple in the orchestra’s repertoire since commissioning the arrangement in 2007 with Ian Tyson's permission. It was for Alberta’s 102nd birthday that year, and since then, the ESO has continually impressed audiences with the charming rendition.
Chief Conductor of the ESO from 2017 -2022, Alex Prior, conducts the orchestra for this performance. It is well-known by audiences and regular patrons of the ESO how Alex grew extremely fond of Alberta during his time in Edmonton as Chief Conductor. You can see him sporting his “Canadian Tuxedo” in the video as his nod to the country music origin of the song. Alex always brought such witty and endearing connections to Albertans who attended concerts he led, and such fun displays of his affection were always met with enthusiastic appreciation.

I have listened to the ESO do this at Symphony under the Sky’s several times. Always my favourite.
As a kid I used to listen at night to CBC classics and hear on the radio now the ESO from the Northern Albert a Jubilee Auditorium the old location they used to play at before the Windspere was built.
The odd thing was living in Ottawa could go listen to the NAC Orchestra with Mario Bernardi, yet still prefer the ESO.
What a beautiful arrangement for a stunning piece of music. Wow! I get goosebumps every time I listen to this. Thank you!

Beautiful. It helps that it was already a well written song--it works so well as an orchestral arrangement. I hope Ian was able to hear this recording before movin' on.

Wonderful piece. Great folk song by Ian and Sylvia, but Claude Lapalme's arrangement takes it to a new level.
ps Lapalme is originally from Montreal, but has now lived in Alberta for 30 years. Wonder if he was drawn here by the line "Think I'll go out to Alberta, Weather's good there in the fall..."
I had issues watching the conductor and listening to the music being played.......knowing the tune from years ago.....created issues to learn a different arrangement........Nicely performed by Edmonton's own.

very nice arrangement, the masks though are extremely off-putting!
Not bad but Actually I've come across no music ever, including mine or even David Fosters, that's been able to even closely capture the sublime beauty and wonder of the spirit of Alberta's mountains, prairies, waters and skies.
The only music seems fitting is bird songs , or moose call, or water falls or rustling leaves in winds. Otherwise

Love the arrangement, however the masks are off-putting. Was there a severe pandemic in Edmonton four months ago? We haven't worn masks here for years...
I'm guessing the wind and brass sections didn't have to wear the stupid masks.
Better safe than sorry. Germs are spewing everywhere from the wind and horn instruments. If enough of them get sick, the show can’t go on.
Magnificent rendition. Masks are of no consequence. No vocals here. Woodwinds and brass were not compromised. Stop using masks as a problem. Does not exist here.
If you don't like the masks, close your eyes, and listen. As was intended.
Masks were always about compliance to Tyranny. Period.
