Ellen Burstyn as Sara Goldfarb in this movie is hands down the BEST acting I have ever seen in my life and it's not even close.
During her "I'm somebody now, Harry" monologue it's like she actually BECOMES Sara.
The ending is so heartbreaking for all of them, especially the very end where Sara is hallucinating herself and Harry reunited on the game show with "I love you, Harry", "I love you, too, ma" and her crying

    • @SmokeyMcPotProductions
      @SmokeyMcPotProductions Před 3 měsíci +9

Yeah, that scene perfectly sums up all she ever wanted throughout the film: for her son to be successful & married with a grandbaby on the way, and to appear on her favorite television show, winning the “grand prize”. The way she smiles to herself before turning into the fetal position is absolutely perfect. But when they tell each other they love each other in the last few seconds of the film, it makes me tear up so much everytime i watch it… even 20 years later. It’s such a powerful way to end the movie.
I also really loved how each main character turned into the fetal position leading up to this scene. Whether they were happy, content, or depressed, they all switch into this position right before it ends.

That scene is really heart of the movie to me. It's everything about drugs and addiction and why people end up there that they try to express visually, all put into a monologue and spelled out for you. It's the part everyone can identify with. Most people never experience the desperation of prostitution or the seedy underbelly of heroin culture and drug dealing, but they can understand Sara's dreams and fears, her sadness, and Harry's reaction to it. It's one of those roles where I have to look up that year's Oscar's and see what else was nominated that year to try and understand how Burstyn didn't win.

I prefer feeling something over feeling nothing.
Other movies make me feel nothing or, worse, they are flippant about the suffering in the world all to make wealthy consumers feel good about themselves.
I get sick to my stomach because these consumers have the power to change the world but they choose not to take any responsibility.
For over a decade now Marvel has been there to make consumers feel good about themselves and I can't stand what that's done to filmmaking.

I've read the book many times, it's great, and here's something cool about it: You can read it two ways! The first way is normal front to back style. The second way is reading each character's plot line individually. The book is written in these block paragraphs, each of which is devoted to one of the 4 characters (or their POV). They switch around between characters a little abruptly. I recommend reading it both ways. The normal way is a classic, but there's something about the characters in isolation that feels starker, it's interesting. Happy reading!

Darren Aronofsky is a filmmaker who focus on pain, struggle and addiction in many forms and that is why Requiem for a Dream is one of his best works and also the most tragedy due to how real it is(yes the addiction parts where exaggerated) but the effects it can have on people is very real and I saw this at a friends house when I was in high school and it shows you the dark side of the world and how people can not care about others during their hour of need and the only type of solace they could find is in their dreams with good memories or hopes.

this movie drew me in and entranced me. i felt like i was experiencing everything with the characters. had to pause it frequently to ground myself to reality again bc my heart was absolutely pounding on the last part of the movie. seeing everyone just spiraling to their fates made me feel awful! best movie that i’ll never see again. definitely watch with caution, if youre in a not-so-good place mentally.

This messed me up for about a week as a teen. And it has since inspired many writers and directors. As for pieces Grand Sensei Rice has shown us, the Soska Sisters reference it multiple times in American Mary. A great film in its own right, and like most Canadian males, I have a crush on Catherine Isabelle. Give the video and the film a watch. Thanks to spooky as always fit delivering the morbid and mad. Love your work man.❤

(Update: finally watched today on March and it was so fucked up. I remained shocked and cried at the end, none of the four deserved what they got in the end. Definetly a one time watch)

rfad turned my head upside down and squeezed it out like a sponge. Felt so sad and empty at the end, but at least I could decompress and go back to normal, unlike the real life equivalents of these characters. It's easy to have compassion, pity for people trapped in self-destructive cycles, but this movie gave me empathy, like, you can't not feel what they're going through.

I love this film but I always refer to it as "the best movie you'll only watch once". It's so, so, so good but even when you know how it ends and it can't surprise you, it's soul-hurting.
BTW anyone else got any masochistic "you'll only watch them once but damn they're good" films? I can recommend Speak No Evil, The Nightingale, A Serbian Film, A Scanner Darkly, Funny Games, and Any Day Now.

Man this got me, my brother is a recovered addict. He's a bit older than me, I remember seeing the sunken in face, the constant lies and thievery, I remember going to a house with guns and drugs and prostitutes at 14yrs old, Cops always showing up, and constantly me and my family were on edge around him. He was in and out of rehab and relapsed multiple times. I thank God has been sober for 15 years. A manager at a warehouse, wife and kids, a nice home, and he started hitting the gym and is doing great!

This most disturbing part of this film was the mother. Living in that crappy apartment alone. Loneliness is one of the worst things for someone at the tail end of their lives to endure. When you’re young you still know you’ll meet someone and plenty of time… but ending up alone in your senior years , a widow, and a dysfunctional or indifferent family who never visit is nightmarish.
