    Ramases is one of the best villains, because you hate to hate him, compared to joker from the Dark Knight.
    With Joker, I almost enjoyed watching him being evil. With Ramases, I am mixed in that I feel sad for him, even though he is so bad and consumed by pride. Even when he is defeated you want him to be happy. That's why he is an incredible villain.

    • @micahgoldson1253
      @micahgoldson1253 Před 8 lety +90

      Yep, and that is exactly how he is portrayed in the Bible. If he were to be some evil maniac, it would not serve the same didactic purpose. The point of the Exodus is for G-d to demonstrate his power to the Jews and show them that they are His people, who G-d fears have lost faith in Him. In addition, we are reminded that the Egyptians were also G-d's children, and we regret what had to happen to them because of Pharoah's cruelty.

    • @shaenguito6467
      @shaenguito6467 Před 8 lety +162

      Personally, I didn't think Ramases was evil or a villian. Even before he was pharaoh, the Israelites were already slaves as Egypt. He continued what his predecessor did because he was taught that the Israelites were nothing compared to the Egyptians and that if they were given equal rights as them, they would take over Egypt. What he did was just to follow what he was taught.
      In the case of freeing the Israelites, he was hurt and confused on why Moses wanted them free when they were taught the same things about them. So he took his stand on what he believed was good for his people instead of listening to Moses. Besides, why would he listen to a god he didn't believe existed or was even real?
      In the end, I just feel sad for Ramases, becuase despite of what happened in the movie, he still loved Moses. He was conflicted about fighting him. And he even welcomed him back to Egypt with open arms! But as a pharoah, he has his duty to the people and to his ancestors.

      +Micah Goldson In the Bible is worse because in the final days God makes Ramses insensitive so he can keep on delivering the plagues. Such a dickmove on God's side tbh, because Ramses was starting to change his mind and bend to it, but God wants to demonstratr the power by completing all the threats. It is one of my least favorite portrayals of God in the Bible.

    It is bizarre that this film has been forgotten. Back at release, it was some groundbreaking stuff, and achieved a Guinness World Record for the amount of time and work put into the animation. The Red Sea scene alone took over a year's worth of labour to complete. If I had to guess, the reason this film was swept under the rug was because Toy Story became a hit and Pixar proved that CGI animation could be done. You might notice that since Toy story, traditional animation has faded into near extinction because CG is arguably cheaper and quicker. A hand-drawn masterpiece like Prince of Egypt took over 4 years of work and 350 artists from 35 different countries.

      A very late reply, but seconding the idea of pride, particularly pride to a point of fault (hubris). For me also, it's such a human failure too. Because it's Ramases doubling down and refusing to change his mind.
      Personally, I grew up religious and that's what I watched this in context of originally (ie the Pharoah is the "bad guy") so I think that also makes me think of it as a tragedy from Ramases' point of view. Because you're watching his brother who he cared about and now believed hates him call into question everything he's stood for and is, and inevitably you know it's all going to come down. His people are suffering presently and he declares that's not enough to change. And the story ends with Moses "winning," his people are ultimately free, and Ramases is left alone, without his brother and without his son (which I think this film does a good job of showing that he actually cares for his son past just being a bloodline).

      the bible even goes on to state that there are things that not even god can do. as he created the universe in 6 days. he rested on the 7th. meaning god has a limit to his power. he has feelings of jealousy, he has feelings of anger, god has feelings of love, but even then he has flaws. and the bible states that not even god, can be perfect.

My mum being probably the most Catholic mum let me watch this as a tiny kid and I just watched it over and over again, not mainly because of my faith, but mainly because of how amazing the animation and music is! I remember having a crush on Moses in this movie when I was young, hahaha (he was good looking). 😊! This is by far my favorite Bible story after the story of "Queen Esther of Susa". They both have deep lessons behind them. I think that the Moses story teaches a leader not to abuse power and my other favorite "Queen of Esther" story is about knowing that family comes first and that people who have bad intentions (like the man Haman who wanted to take away the Kings power wanted to purposely remove, and wanted him to get rid off out of his life his closest people dearest to him to make him weak (one of them would turn out to be the person that he loved which was Esther).Then take his place, but of course Good always wins in the end! A great movie to watch, about Esther's life story that I love is "One Night With The King" I highly recommend it! I think that the Bible teaches us to trust in God and most importantly let's us know that God is always protecting us.🙏💙

    everyone seems to say they where scared of that scene as a child.
    I mean, I remember rewinding just to watch that scene over and over again like 10 times ("deliver us'" and "playing with the big boys now"where my other two favorites)
    the only scene that really freaked me out was the scene where Moses ran around looking at the hieroglyphs of babies getting eaten by crocodiles

      Listen to yourself. You're talking about a supposed all-powerful entity. If this God is all-powerful, he could easily make a way for the Pharaoh's mind to change without hurting the Egyptians. Not only this, but he's also changed people's minds before by appearing to them himself, see Saul turned Paul.

    • @yashamoto
      @yashamoto Před 10 lety +4

      CaliberStone A reply like that only shows your ignorance. God gave us free will for a reason. He would not just will it away. Then it wouldn't be free will at all. He changed the Pharaoh's mind in the end, but Ramses freed the Hebrews of his own will. You understand nothing and I will not waste any more time on trying to explain it to you who are already making something up to throw it back in my face. Good day.

      @CaliberStone Před 10 lety +14

      Argumentum ad hominem, I see.
      Again, we're talking about someone who supposedly has unlimited power. If this is the case, he could convince Pharaoh without interfering with his free will. He apparently did something similar to this on the Road to Damascus with Saul who later became Paul.
      And if you don't have a true rebuttal, I agree. You shouldn't respond back.

    Actual conversation between me (aged 10) and my RE teacher:
    Me: Miss, why did God kill all the firstborns of Egypt- why didn't he just bump off the pharoah?
    Miss: Because then another one would take his place.
    Me: Then why not just kill that one- I'm sure that after four or five pharoahs had been killed somebody would have freed the hebrews.
    Miss: *looks away and pretends not to see me waving my hand in the air constantly throughout the lesson as new points come to me.*

    One thing I always found interesting is how none of the plagues effected Ramses, he wasn't forced to suffer among his people, but rather he was forced to WATCH his people suffer because of his unwillingness to free the slaves, and with all plagues passed, he's put almost completely out of power, with his men dead, his people injured, and countless children dead, because of him, Egypt was put into chaos, and he suffers a consequence that's just as bad as any of the plagues.
