2006 Envoy 5.3 random die and no restart, P1682, P0689, P0443

  • my 06 envoy died while driving, restarted and went another 50 feet and died again, with crank, no start. P1682, P0689 and P0443 were set along with some throttle controller codes. Next morning the vehicle started up fine, and after 45 minutes it died again, same codes. Root cause was a break in the power-train relay control circuit between the ECM and the relay. Testing showed it was in the fuse center, took it apart to investigate. I ended up repairing this since it was a low current relay control circuit.

    Had this exact problem on my 2006 GMC Envoy XL Denali. DTC's were P1516, P0443, P0689, P1682, P2101 and P2176. I disassembled the fuse relay box and found the same break in the wire listed here and in the Trailblazer SS post from Alan Sunday. I repaired it using the pictures from the downloadable PDF that is linked to on Alan's page. Many thanks to all that contributed to this article.

      I also have a 2006 GMC Envoy XL Denali with this exact same issue. It will run 1st thing in the morning then die after anout 45 minutes of use. Then it wont start for another hour or 2. This repeats all day, everyday.

    This is the best video showing where the break is in the 20 gauge copper wire. Thanks so much for posting this! Just went through this last year on my 07 Trailblazer SS. Same problem with the cranking that you mention. It is a tiny hair line crack in the wire at that bend that you show. Very hard to see with the naked eye. You have to pry up the wire slowly to see the actual break, but it's there and in the very same spot as yours. This happens also on the Chevy SSR model as well. I ended up replacing the wire with wire from Lowe's instead of soldering the existing one. Also, I rerouted the wire to not have so many bends when laying new wire down.
    I want to tag this video on one of my posts if you don't mind.

    Identical problem on a 2005 v8 chevy trailblazer 150k miles..... chasing my tail trying to track down 7 codes!.... then found your video, This problem should not be happening... a fuse box should be a lot more robust than this... shame on GM and the electrical engineering staff.
    Thankyou For the video Saved hours of trying to track down Phantom codes.

    Likely caused by different rates of heat expansion of plastic & copper.

    • @joetaylor7442
      @joetaylor7442 Před 3 lety

      Exactly. Replacing the whole wire, and shaving out the inside plastic holders on the angles would solve this problem.

    How many millions of GM cars have these ridiculous fuse blocks? I've had 3 cars with this broken wires issue.

    Well I was just having this problem. Soldered the wire all through the little S turn. It ran for over an hour with no issues so hopefully its fixed. I'll find out tomorrow when I drive it more.

      @@brandiewest2012 it lasted a few months after I soldered it but failed then tried again and later a little longer but again failed. I replaced the whole fuse block and it's been fine since. Fuse block is kinda hard to find and expensive but an easy fix.

      @victorknight516 Man I am having this same freaking problem but the codes I get are P0689 and throttle body codes. Replaced throttle body and thought it fixed the problem but here I am again stranded and waiting for the car to start up again. It's a 2005 buick rainier 5.3l

    Mine would run but once shut off at temp it wouldn't restart. I was all over ripping it apart and didn't know there was 2 sides of the traces. Pryed with a pick tool watching some other video and it snapped right at that offset
