- In this video, I talk about why Garry Chalk is an amazing voice for Optimus, and why I think that he's criminally underrated by Transformers fans today. I did this completely unscripted, but I hope that it turned out alright.

I like both Peter Cullen and Gary Chalk, but for me who was raised at the era of the unicron trilogy, Chalk's Prime is little closer to me. It's kinda sad to see that Gary Chalk is often not mentioned or not being included for the new projects. He's a pretty good VA and a good Optimus Prime/Primal voice.
He is a pretty talented VA; looking through his BTVA page, I was kinda surprised by his range because his Optimus is kinda just his own voice but sterner and more heroic.
And yeah, it really sucks that he hasn't been approached for any new roles in Transformers media. I'd love to hear Garry Chalk play Optimus in a new show/movie.

I wouldn’t mind letting the characterization that peter cullen’s prime has, retire along side him. And in his place have garry be prime and have his renditions also have a similar consistent characterization throughout his renditions, and one that’s consistent with his unicron trilogy prime as well

I love Gary chalk and Peter Cullen, Peter Cullen is the stoic and iconic voice for optimus prime, Gary Chalk is the great voice for a younger and flawed prime still finding his path. A lot more human, on the path to becoming the leader we know
I love both Peter and Garry as Prime. The latter was actually the first Optimus I heard, having been introduced to Transformers through Beast Wars.
Couldn't agree more, he's one of my favorite Optimus VA's besides Peter and David.

Garry Chalk as Optimus Prime is awesome. I watch the Armada, bit of Energon and Cybertron and even Optimus Primal as well. I hope he returns as Primal or Optimus Prime as well. Ron Perlman is a great VA of Optimus Primal as well he did so good and I can wait to hear him voice him in the movie soon. And Peter Cullen always be my favorite voice actor of Optimus Prime as well. I hope Garry can voice OP in a new Transformers game, movie or show soon. Thank you for the video.

I was a Unicron Trilogy era kid who owned G1 DVDs and loved both in different ways.
They’re both different yet valid takes. Cullen is more of a strong yet gentle father who is pretty good at convincing you that he has all the answers. Chalk always struck me more as an anime warrior of justice and a leader of a band of heroes.
They are both Optimus Prime.

Love em both. Started my Transformers journey with the 1986 movie as a kid , but grew up on Garry's with the Beast Wars all the way to Cybertron. I had light experiences with G1 transformers but the comeback of Peter Cullen in the live action movies in my middle school days revived that spark that I recall from 5-7 years of life in the late 90s and early 2000s.
Both exemplify what Optimus stands for. Both will always be apart of my childhood and the rest of my life when I think of Optimus.

How have I not seen this video yet?! Dude this is fantastic stuff! Garry Chalk was my Optimus Prime as a kid so to see some major appreciation and spotlight on him as well as his takes on Optimus is an utter treat and a major respect to him. The editing is stellar as well. I hope Garry comes back to Transformers one day and I hope one day I get to meet that man, shake his hand and thank him for voicing my childhood. Incredible work dude. Keep it up!

I grew up with the Unicron Trilogy and I totally agree with the conclusions you came to. Peter Cullen is a more classic OP acting a sort of infallible moral compass. His version of the character is always doing what is best for his troops and very easy to follow, with the only exception being the way the Bayverse one was written. Chalk's Prime always came across as a developing leader who wasn't afraid to ensure his troops stayed in line, especially evident in Energon. I think both of them portray their rolls perfectly and I was super disappointed to hear that he wouldn't be voicing Primal in ROTB. Again, no disrespect intended but for a franchise that is losing respect with its own fans, it seems like the largest missed opportunity in the history of the franchise not putting these two in the same movie.

I didn't mention this in the video, but Garry Chalk's Optimus is the voice I hear when reading things like the Marvel comic or even some of IDW's stuff. Optimus in the comics a lot of the time comes across as a regular guy who's just trying (and struggling) to do the right thing, and that really works with Garry Chalk's performance.
And yeah, hearing Garry Chalk and Peter Cullen interact with each other on the big screen would've been incredible. That's, like, No Way Home levels of fan service for Transformers fans right there.
It does suck that Gary Chalk isn’t gonna be Primal in Rise of the Beasts! I don’t know, it’d have been great for Hasbro to commemorate the guy’s portrayal of the character by doing that.
Garry Chalk doesn't get the recognition he deserves for voicing Optimus Prime. I grew up on the G1 series, and will always have luv for Peter Cullens Optimus Prime. When I hear Garry Chalks Optimus...his voice has a radiance to it, that is firm, warm, and commanding. When you hear him, you believe this is Optimus Prime...next to Peter Cullens portrayal. Amazing talent!!!

As someone who watched both the original Transformers and Beast Wars in different stages of childhood I love both of these guys, but I have to have a little bit more respect for Garry Chalk because of the way he’s willing to call out the poor treatment of the Optimus Prime character in the Michael Bay films. I was more than a little disappointed when Peter agreed to do lines that even he said he was not comfortable with. To me it lacked resolve, not in line with Optimus Prime at all. But at an adult level I understand why he did it. These movies pay very well and he is accruing a very impressive nest egg for his family I’m sure. Either way they’re both legends.
As much as Peter is my favorite voice of Optimus, I love Chalk's take of both Prime and Primal. G1, Unicron Trilogy, Animated, one thing these shows have in common is that their Primes are quite different from each other, including their voices. What I hate about the Netflix version however, isn't that it isn't Cullen, but that it's someone else not trying to do their own take of the character, but rather they are trying to mimic Peter's Prime. Actors should just play characters, not play other actors playing characters just because a studio is too cheap to get an actor who's willing to go for cheaper pay because he loves the franchise. Just look at TF Prime. That was a show that managed to get the legacy voice of Optimus, despite Peter also being in extremely expensive movies.
Simply put, Netflix should have 100% either went with Peter, or not at all. Instead of getting a new and unique take of the character, they tried getting a K-Mart brand Peter Cullen knock off.

Both Chalk and Cullen are amazing actors. However depending on who'm i hear i get a different 'vibe'.
I will always associate Cullen's Optimus with a mentor and fatherly role who shows how warm his spark is.
Chalk meanwhile makes me think of a flawed leader who'm will try to do his best even if he becomes frustrated.
Something like that in a nutshell.

The feeling that I always got with Chalktimus was that he wanted to be a fun, joke-cracking, father-to-his-men type of leader, but his men always take him waaaaay too seriously and have too much respect for him to go along with it
I started with Armada, so I've always liked Garry. After Cybertron I got into the original series and the movies, I came to also like Peter. I find both Garry and Peter to be tied as the best voices of Optimus Prime. One day, I would like to see Garry reprise the role.
I do wonder if him trash talking the Bay movies is the reason he didn't get the role in Rise Of The Beasts. Great video essay!

I'll be the first to admit that I'm not an expert on this, but I suspect that the reason he wasn't cast could be because he's a Vancouver-based voice actor, and so there's just a lot of red tape that prevents him working with LA-based talent. Not that it hasn't been done before, it's just kind of a logistical nightmare. Again, don't take my word on it, I'm far from an expert, but that's just my theory. It could just as easily be that they wanted a celebrity or that he dissed the Bay movies.

Peter Cullen is the definitive as Optimus Prime he has been voicing for nearly 40 years mad respect for him and same thing goes towards Garry Chalk and David Kaye, Garry will always be Optimus Primal and did a fantastic job voicing Optimus Prime in the Unicron Trilogy and David was so good voicing Optimus in the 2007 animated series.
Gary Chalk sounds like James Avery, which as a kid I always thought Uncle Phil was voicing Optimus lol

peter cullen is optimus prime to me hes the og but chalk is still awesome but primal is gary chalk as someone who grew up on beast wars and machines he should 1000% be given more recognition and its a crime he is not in rise of the beasts voicing primal likewise david kaye for megatron they are the definitive voices of primal and megatron and not to mention chalk did a great job in crosshairs productions target alpha trion voicing hound too

I mean, Peter Cullen is not like "THE ONE AND ONLY OPTIMUS PRIME" Like your James Bond example for Optimus, I also see Optimus like this as well. Albeit, I see it more as Batman than 007. Here's how I picture it:
Cullen's Prime = Animated Series Batman
Chalk's Prime = Brave & The Bold Batman
Kaye's Prime = Batman Beyond
Kaplan's Prime = 1989 Batman
Foushee's Prime = Joel Schumacher Batman
Tudyk's Prime = 1966 Batman

I love both Gary and Peter. David Kaye also plays a strong Optimus in Animated albeit one that is far different than the original character. Gary for me though will always be number 1. I had a odd experience cause I grew up on all Transformers. My mom has been a fan since the 80s, so I was raised with G1 and the Unicron Trilogy. Since I had DVDs of G1 (as well as Beast Wars and TF Victory) and I watched the UT as it aired as a kid. I love Peter Cullens take on the character, always will. But something about Gary’s performance always just appealed to me. The Armada & Energon version of Optimus is also the one I have the most attachment to. I would sit and rewatch both shows over and over again as a kid. So for me Gary is my Optimus, and always will be. I really want to hear him and David Kaye as Op and Megs in a new TF show. I’m kinda bummed he won’t be in ROTB even if he’d be primal and not prime, it’d be nice to hear him.
If Peter ever decides to retire, Gary would be my first choice as new guy. If you gotta bring in a new guy, I would rather he do a new voice instead of just trying to imitate that iconic Peter Cullen voice. Because that's really all it'll be, an imitation. Gary Chalk has a different Optimus Prime voice, but in my opinion his performance is on par with Cullen's. They both portray the courage and wisdom of the character, just in two different flavors.

I'm good with either Cybertron or Armada, personally. The Energon design is not one of Optimus' better looks, to put it mildly.

Even though Garry Chalk is my favorite Optimus, I won't deny that Peter Cullen is the GOAT.
My problem with Optimus Primal as a character in Beast Machines was the writers were trying to turn him into Captain Cisco from Star Trek Deep Space Nine. Though Garry Chalk did his best with what he had given to him in the way of script, it certainly wasn't the Primal we got in Beast Wars.
Admittedly the most I've seen of Trek is TNG but yeah, even Garry Chalk wasn't really fond of how Optimus was portrayed in Beast Machines.

David Kaye as Optimus was absolutely peak as well. Garry and David came in to big shoes and made it their own. What I hate about modern voices for Optimus (who aren’t Peter) are just trying to do a Peter impression.
Love David Kaye's Optimus Prime, he's great in the role too. Kinda want him to reprise at some point, to be honest.

Personally my favorite optimus Prime and Megatron actors are Gary Chalk and David Kaye although I will always love Peter Cullen and Frank Whelker they are the OGs and they deserve every bit of praise.

Prime and Primal are very different characters. Optimus Primal is the descendent of the original Optimus Prime and leader of the Maximals. Primal may not possess the wisdom of his ancestor or the Matrix of Leadership, but his abilities as a warrior and strategist make him one very tough bot. His is very different from Optimus in design, in voice, in his arsenal of weapons, and in alt mode type.

As a kid, I watched Transformers G1, recall Peter Cullen, but only remember it vaguely. I have very active memories of Beast Wars, though. I prefer Gary Chalk. No disrespect to Mr. Cullen, but now he suffers from the same problem that James Earl Jones as Darth Vader suffers from: the old age in his voice.
Yeah, one of the things I tried to talk about (in an admittedly rambly fashion) is how Garry Chalk is the Optimus of an entire generation of fans. Like, it's easy to overlook that, but for a lot of people like yourself, he WAS Optimus Prime.
I wonder how much of the problem with Cullen's modern performance is his age, and how much of it is just, like, stale voice direction; it feels like he's just told to read his lines in the same tone most of the time, and that's really odd.

Garry Chalk, or even Neil Kaplan, would both be perfect for a younger Optimus, not the Orion Pax-era, that should have someone younger and more naive sounding, but an earlier and more youthful Optimus, yet not so naive as Orion.

No clue, to be honest. Garry Chalk has said that he wasn't even asked to reprise the role, which is a bummer, honestly.
Controversial take: but I actually prefer Garry Chalk as Optimus Prime compared to the newer (Bayformers-onward) renditions by Peter Cullen (though the G1 Peter Cullen voice is still best overall). Reason being that in my interpretation, Optimus Prime should sound middle-aged, and current Peter Cullen renditions sound a bit TOO old to fully work for me (Optimus sounded younger in G1), especially since modern writers forget that Optimus Prime in G1 had a sense of humor and was capable of being warm, caring, friendly, etc…something that Cybertron Optimus Prime absolutely NAILS, but Bayformers-onward (except Animated-though I would compare Animated Optimus more to Orion Pax) renditions COMPLETELY miss the mark on. I think one potential good approach might be to have Garry Chalk as Optimus Prime and Peter Cullen as Alpha Trion, or something like that.
This kind of take doesn't make much sense.....can't expect Peter to sound young as he voices prime at his current age and even frank as megatron definitely showed his age in voice acting. Frank being megatron in g1 vs him in prime? Completely different in tone. Following this same logic, Garry shouldn't come back as primal or prime cause he's right behind frank in age.
Optimus is a mature character sure gut that doesn't mean every version of him needs to crack jokes. That's a good quality to him every once and awhile but more mature and stoic versions of him also work. Even then, stoicism was already a trait optimus had as far back as g1. You're acting like optimus being stoic=him not caring when he does still care. He just shows it through his actions more so than his words hence the saying *actions speak louder than words*
While I do personally prefer Garry since I grew up with him from Armada onwards (went back to watch Beast Wars), I can't discredit any of the other VAs who've voiced both of them over the years, though I do find like two voices to feel a bit unfitting.

Oh man, I’m guilty. To me I believed Peter Cullen is the best and only Optimus Prime. I completely forgot that I grew up with Garry Chalk. He was Optimus to me. I didn’t know him as primal yet but I did know him as Prime. Man I understand now how amazing Garry Chalk was as Prime and Primal. They are both amazing Optimus Prime voice actors.
