Beast Wars Interview with David Kaye [Megatron]

- This is an interview with voice actor David Kaye on his experience working on the 1990s cartoon, Beast Wars: Transformers. David Kaye plays Megatron on Beast Wars, and went on to reprise the role in Beast Machines, as well as Transformers Armada, Energon, and Cyberton, before being cast as Optimus Prime in Transformers Animated.
This interview was originally included as a bonus feature on a now out of print Beast Wars DVD set. I have uploaded it here for posterity.

Definitely BW Predacon Megatron.
BW Megatron & Cybertron/ Galaxy Force Megatron.
BM Megatron.
BW TM1 Megatron and Armada Megatron. for some I like his first line in Armada when he tells the human characters to hand over the minicon.
Except for savage/noble the werewolf and weredragon together as one just like the version of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.
Hearing someone like David Kaye saying that Frank Welker is his hero really says how humble he is.
It's a crime to be that talented and good looking, yessssss

Oh and Agenda Part 1 on the Ark when he refers to the Autobots/Maximals. "Archaic energon guzzlers. How dare they!" Took me years to figure out what he was saying lol

And did fantastic as both to boot.
About two. Gary Chalk was the first. He did Optimus Primal and Armada Optimus, but do you remember that episode of Beast Wars with Ravage and the message from the original Megatron? The original megatron was voiced by Gary Chalk in that episode as Frank Welker wasn’t available.

Frank Welker may have been the Original Megatron, but in my Eyes David Kaye will always be the Best Megatron (whether it's the Pompous Meglomaniac of Beast Wars, the Malevolent Cybertron Overlord in Beast Machines or the Dry Witted Aristocrat in the Unicron Trilogy).
I do hope he returns to the Role someday
Well the "Original" Megatron and the Beast Era Megatron are not the same being so there is nothing wrong with David voicing the "Beast* Megatron from the Future and Frank voicing "Original" Megatron from the Past

Come to think of it.... there were times during Beast Wars' original run on network TV, that I thought Sir Patrick Stewart (Jean Luc Picard), would make an excellent drone........err, i mean, Megatron. Yesssssssss........... Make it so!
David Kaye redefined Megatron making him more calculating and methodical. The blend of influences that inspired his performance were noticable, but well concealed (you can see it and yet not) in an original Arch-Villain and all around megalomaniac. Anytime You tell not one but 2 Maximals "New packaging, same product.........Losers!"
Megatron was super eloquent and super intelligent, always one step ahead of everyone else. His entire campaign was based on his ability to see opportunities to obtain more power. It made him more than just evil, he was layered. Kaye said that was the best reflection of himself in Megatron, his layers, I think he hit it dead-center mass.
But.............I was waiting the entire video to see him do more Megatron and he only did a little.

David Kaye, you know, throughout the late 90's and early 2000's I always thought you'd be the best voice for Thanos(Of "Infinity War" fame to most these days), for the SAME reasons you liked voicing Megatron; Layers!

I've been watching all these interviews (and everything on this channel... My childhood all up in here. Beautiful) I like how they all mention his they filmed episodes together. From what I've watched from Dragonball Z voice actor interviews... That's something that rarely happens in voice acting overall. Maybe one or two, but the whole cast?

Yea, the cast of DBZ do a different kind of recording called ADR, which basically means they're dubbing over something that was already there, so timing is very very important since it needs to fit into the footage that already exists. These shows on the other hand were pre-recorded, which means voice work is the first thing that happens, and the show is animated around that. It makes more sense in this situation to have everyone in the room together so they can play off one another in real time and have better chemistry.

I think it is funny that Kaye voiced megatron in 5 series and then optimus prime plus several other characters in animated.
my first time was armada then i found youtube and some toy reviews of beast wars and then i saw some clips and videos and fell in love with bw

I've always wondered how much time actually passed between the time that Megatron broke off the roof of the Maximals' ship in Beast Machines and when the Maximals saw Cybertron.
If I could ask him anything, it would be how it felt to play Optimus in Animated, after all his years of playing Megatron.

What a legend.
I like his husky and calm voice, but I enjoy him best when does that deep, gruff, and regal voice.
Iron Man is his favorite hero? He must of went nuts when the first Iron Man film came out.
He also voiced Iron Man in Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects and Fantastic Four: World's Greatest Heroes. Can't imagine how he feels doing that role.
Watching these Beast Wars interviews, it's clear that Beast Machines killed the joy not only for the viewer, but for the actors as well. That's truly sad. Beast Machines is such a tragedy.

David Kaye is a better Megatron than frank Welker, he is also great as clank and in regular show, he even return as beast wars Megatron in a recent robot chicken sketch
Hey!!! Frank Walker is the best Megatron (didn't you see TF Prime), and David Kaye just as Brilliant, both actors are iconic Megatrons in there own right.
lmao that Robot Chicken sketch was fantastic. I think we can all agree that those two versions of Megatron are SO different... Each of their actors is perfect for those roles. I don't think David Kaye would have made a better TF Prime Megatron than Welker, but I don't think Frank Welker would have made better Beast Wars Megatron than Kaye. Two totally different characters.
I'd be on your side if it wasnt for transformers prime and animated. Both Frank welker and Cory Burton killed it in those franchises. But Dave, Frank and Cory all play amazing Megatron's. Hugo weaving wasn't a good enough Megatron at all
Hmmm. I won't say he's a better Megatron than Frank, but he is a different one, and just about as good.
Their Megatrons are very different characters. Frank plays very cold, harsh, militaristic Megatrons who are pragmatic to a fault besides the occasional speech. Kaye plays extremely charismatic Megatrons who inspire loyalty or pragmatic following through a singular belief in their objectives.
He knows what Babylon 5 is!!!🤩

I would love to, however I didn't conduct any of these interviews. They come from a Beast Wars DVD set released in 2006. I've uploaded the interviews here because those DVD sets are out of print, and are now very hard to come by.
