The whole point is that the girl could not just "walk through the door" because she was brainwashed, so it doesn't really make sense to tell this guy who's also a former cult member the door is wide open. Seems to make a point opposite of what was intended
I think the point he was making was if you believe that girl could have got up and left at any time then so can you. I felt it was more of an affirmation that hes not bound to anyone and he can be free of this.

I will say, I have never met anyone with Tourette’s where the only ticks they have is yelling slurs at black people and calling people fat constantly.
Well in my neighborhood there is a man with SEVERE Tourette's (let's call him Barry), which is extremely fucking rare by the way, who does yell out slurs continuously (calls me a BITCH!BITCH!BITCH!BITCH! or a C*NT!C*NT!C*NT!C*NT! whenever he sees me), but no one ever takes offense because it is painfully obvious he does not mean it and it's his condition making him act this way. Through a government program that funds employment for people with disabilities, he works at a small fruit market next to the store I used to work at and has black coworkers so the N-word is sometimes yelled out (loudly enough for me to hear through the walls), but when I asked them how they felt about it they said something like "the guy's life is hard and humiliating enough as it is ; it's immediately clear there's something wrong that's beyond his control and that he's not at all hateful, so there's really nothing to be offended about (this I remember verbatim) it would be like being offended that a deaf person said they couldn't enjoy your singing."
I must say I pretty much have the same sentiment as a woman walking alone being called a c*nt from across the street : in most circumstances I would be extremely offended and freaked out and call the person out, but when the word is stuck on repeat for two minutes and whoever is saying it is trying to avoid looking at you, you quickly realize their intent is not to harass you and the best thing to do is to not draw more attention to the situation by pretending you haven't noticed they have a debilitating neurological condition... When we do cross paths I just say "Hi Barry!" and he says hello back and that's it. (I also want to mention that he never uses slur nor speaks at an inadequate volume when in conversation with people. It's not like he's ever called me a bitch as a default noun, like "how's it going bitch." There's a big difference between a tick and being a potty mouth to what I understand, and Barry is polite and softspoken when he's not ticking)
What I find extremely fucking weird in Marc's story is that he said he warned the bus driver in advance that he had Tourette's and would be blurting out slurs...? Erm... that's not something I've ever heard of before... like I said, it's really hard to be offended by Barry's behavior because withing 5 seconds it's clear to everyone he isn't in control of his tics, and people pity him more than they feel anger towards him. Furthermore, I've never heard of Barry needing to preemptively warn people of the tourettes and his ticks as they very quickly become obvious to all. He wouldn't want the extra attention and I'm pretty sure he wouldn't need to explain himself. Also, if Marc is aware one of his ticks is to yell the N-word whenever he sees a black person, wouldn't he organize himself to avoid confrontation as much as possible?And isn't walking onto a bus full of African Americans declaring "I will call you the N-word but don't blame me, I have tourettes" the absolute worst thing he could have done to avoid said confrontation? So, even as a laywoman who does not have Tourette's, if I compare what I've observed from Barry's life since my own childhood and how Marc described "his Tourette's" and then how he "cured" his incurable condition by talking about philosophy in group therapy for the low low price of $50,000 per traumatizing course... (omitting the Neurolinguistic shit, basically therapeutic hypnosis, which does have incredible potential but is in no fucking means an approved permanent treatment because people under permanent hypnosis sounds like a recipe for unmitigated fuckery and I'm fairly certain he has no clue how to do it either) yeah he really sounds like a entitled white boy who faked Tourette's for the shits and giggles of saying racist slurs, then got a business opportunity out of it scamming and trafficking people in a cult. Again, I don't know Marc from Adam and I'm not a specialist, but from having had the rare opportunity to be around a person genuinely affected by the most severe manifestations of the condition, everything Marc says about his experience sounds very counterintuitive to what I've witnessed Barry experience even from afar, and just that creeps me the fuck out.

This is the greatest show of all time. Not only did Ethan confront the dude, but he never backed down. At first I thought he was just going to clown him the entire time, but when he said “faked your Tourette’s” I lost my mind. The dude had no clue how to respond and realized he’s talking to someone with Tourette’s during the conversation. It was so insane, and the lore we will gain from this episode will be insurmountable.

Ethan was clearly trying to uncover the truth and Mark was very clearly doing his best to keep things together. It was uncomfortable to watch because what we saw was not a normal everyday conversation, and most people would not pursue further inquiry when the other person lies to them.
"The best out of the best people". The person he interviewed, Mark, isn't even a good person, let alone "the best." C'mon.

My point is ethan's confrontational style is necessary just as compassionate interview is also, its just a matter of time and place. Marc’s entire approach and motivation for defending Keith makes a lot more sense when you stop viewing him entirely as a victim and start understanding him as a grifter and a predator in his own right. He has completely adopted Keith’s teachings and learned to use them himself to promote his fake Tourette’s bullshit - he’s completely motivated to defend Keith/NXIVM so that people don’t run away from him the minute they see that’s all his “cure” is based on. He stayed mild mannered and polite because it’s not in his best interest to flip out on you - I guarantee a lot of people watching understandably gave him more grace and sympathy than they would have if he’d been rude or aggressive and he knows that because he’s clearly very thoroughly media trained. Watching that entire conversation was a masterclass in spin/PR and how to use things like deflection, false equivocation, careful language, calm demeanor, etc. to rework a narrative and gaslight someone you’re in conversation with into thinking he’s being sincere and rational while at the same time he’s saying the most batshit and offensive things (ex. defending the rape of a 15 year old “woman” ). However much this man has been brainwashed, he’s also clearly made the decision that his path to success in life will be using his speaking skills to take advantage of other people’s willingness to trust and desire to believe others are acting in good faith. Typical grifter. Perfect reincarnation of Keith himself.
To clarify, I think Ethan and the crew handled this well. I just think even their post-interview chat still questioning whether this guy was sincere or not and wanting to believe he’s acting in good faith just goes to show how effective someone like Marc/Keith can be in disarming even the most critical and informed opponent. They prey upon our desire to want them to be better. That’s why it’s important to call them out directly in the way Ethan was to highlight their hypocrisy and inconsistency
