John and Freddie written this song together, I think👑👑lovely
In the music video, which is sometimes called the best concert that never happened, all the people who watching the band perform on stage, were paid with a T-shirt that said 'A Friend of Queen' on it.
I don't use the word "friend" lightly, tbh. I get along with people just fine after the first moment of shyness, but friendship is something else.
I love to think that John and Freddie wrote this song together.
You're right regarding friends. For Freddie and the other three, they were really truely bonded friends until the very end, musically and personally.
I always thought this song was a bit foretelling. Years later after the band knew about Freddie's disease, they protected him from all prying eyes as best they could. They out and out lied about him to the press, claiming he was perfectly healthy and wasn't sick (Roger once told an interviewer that he just saw Freddie at the gym that morning and he looked great). Freddie just wanted to make music as long as possible so John, Brian, and Roger went to their Montreaux studio everyday, waiting to see if Freddie felt strong enough that day to work because that's what he needed. The music and their support helped Freddie live longer than his doctors expected. They stay with Freddie in Switzerland until he knew he could go on no more and flew back to London to die in his beloved home, the Garden Lodge. Brian, Roger, John, and Freddie were friends right to the end.

During the show, Freddie "high fives" audience members, and at the end cuts the mic and sings along with them, letting them lead. Because of this, this performance was nicknamed "Queen's Greatest Show Never Performed".
You can tell the age of this song, Freddie mentions phone cards. The extended version of this is called "Freinds will be freinds will be friends", the video is another fanclub extravaganza. I Love this song
Freddie and Deacy wrote this together not knowing Freddie’s future! The band were “there till the very end” with Freddie! Along with the real friends Mary, Peter Freestone and a few others. Friends “who you can trust till the end” are usually far and few between! Though I do have several. Brian’s guitar solo 🎸 is so beautiful mixing with Roger and Deacy! And no one can ever top Freddie’s vocals! Thanks Hap, for your great reaction, but I had to giggle at first thinking about you saying it sounded like a love song, friends with benefits? One of the live versions Freddie actually is on a low stage out in the audience having a good time with them! Yes, I’ve had the taker friends but finally realized it and got out. Real friends share love and respect to me!

They did a short version live at Wembley that was great. Brian said fans always know We Will Rock You and We Are the Champions are always the last 2 songs of a concert so they wanted to surprise them and slip Friends Will Be Friends in between the two. It was amazing!

Saw them in concert at Wembley 1986 on the Magic tour. The charisma of Freddie Mercury was absolutely amazing. Warm up acts were INXS and Status Quo. Me and girlfriend brought a wine box and two tea mugs. Best concert I ever went to, the atmosphere was incredible. We bought that album from a guy outside afterwards.
I saw them 9th august 86 in their last performance with Freddie at Knebworth

Although Freddie and John wrote this song together, many of John's songs were about friendship and love....One year of love, You're my best friend, In only 7 days, You and I, My life has been saved, Need your loving. That was the kind of guy John was but every now and then he would come out with a surprise totally out of character.

One of the Queen songs that brings back special memories. Check out the official video which had a lot of fans in it invited via the fan club. Freddie was having great fun with the audience after the official filming had finished that he insisted some of the scenes made it into the final video

Love this song. The official video is great. It has the band playing to the Queen Fan Club and Freddie having a singalong with them at the end. I like how they put it in between We Will Rock You and We Are the Champions on the Magic tour. Very creative. The lyric seems to be about a breakup and he/she has good friends they can rely on to get them through it. The band always rallied around each other during tough times, especially after Freddie got sick. Roger's Old Friends is a loving tribute to their friendship.
I love the video for this song ... so much fun, and where they had members of the Queen fan club as the audience (like they did with the We Are The Champions video).
Adina, you did the right thing, staying up to hear this. I don't remember hearing this song. It's a fantastic one! Those lyrics are so true. Not only was the song great but KP's reaction and the thoughts he provoked in me hit home. He really made me think!! I "had" a friend that was all take, take, take. One remark he made was the straw on that broke camel's back. That is in the past and it's best for it to stay there. KP also made me think what a real friend is and how many true friends I have. I am blessed to have several. Sadly to say, I have a real friend and, somehow, we no longer stay in touch. We moved to different states and our everyday lives pulled us in different directions. It’s a song I very much love and cherish, glad it made through on the voting. The meaning of real friendship will be and is getting clearer as we age and gain experiences in our social life. It’s actually the meaning of life. Some people are lucky enough to have them but it also depends on ourselves- how capable of loving giving and how respectful we are.

Great reaction HAP. These guys were born to be in a band together. This is a great song and it shows how much these guys loved each other. They are FAMILY. Thats ok you go ahead and enjoy it. There are so many more songs for you to enjoy that you havent heard yet. The official video has the band in a studio in front of a live audience and the crowd gets involved singing with the band. The live version of this song is amazing to watch too because it was at the Wembley concert July 12th 1986 and ofcourse FREDDIE has the crowd singing along too. I hope you are my friend HAP. Love Queen. This was played at Freddie’s funeral after an Aretha Franklin hymn and his opera bestie Monserrat Caballe sang Freddie’s favorite Verdi opera. 😢
