    I thought that I was just bad at doing makeup for YEARS because, no matter what I did, it looked like makeup. Influencers had me absolutely convinced that there was a way to wear foundation and it look like normal skin 🗿

    • @littleblackpistol
      @littleblackpistol Pƙed 2 lety +152

      Influencers typically use way too much foundation and concealer as most of them are trapped in the drag queen style make-up which is the only one they really know how to do. That only looks 'good' on a stage, under stage lights, or on video, heavily lit with bright white light, and a digital filter slapped on to make it look 'normal' and 'glowing' and 'poreless'. if you saw them off camera in that make-up you'd understand how they look as bad as anyone else. I suggest following a MU like Lisa Eldridge who has professional make-up skills and doesn't rely on drag queen make-up looks. She uses as little foundation as possible, She's the creative head of Lancome and has worked as a MU on major films. One thing she says which stood out for me is that in the real world of professional film, nobody contours. Nobody. It's a stage technique to either feminize a male face or to make a face stand out to the back rows and looks appalling IRL or in a film situation where you want an actress to look beautiful but natural.

      Same! I thought I was so bad and unskilled because even my basic makeup never looked like theirs. I just gave up and accepted that I was doomed to sub-par mediocrity. I've always preferred a more natural, understated look, anyway. But you see all these people literally painting on foundation like it's spackle to get that "flawless" look, but just imagine how awful and cakey it would look in normal life.
      The turning point for me was when the massive concealer triangles were everything. I have genetic dark circles, and even I don't need a fraction of the amount of product they use. From that point on, I was more aware of reality vs. expectation, and of the constant blurring of any semblance of humanity. No one is flawless. We all have pores. Our hair gets frizzy with flyaways. Our "imperfections" aren't imperfections at all.

      @@littleblackpistol Can confirm. I've never had them contour and the look is 'no makeup, I just wake up like this' (I don't lol). They make it look SO good though and I'm always like 'damn, I wish I wasn't so tired/ it's so late and we have to be back here early, cuz I don't wanna waste this face and wish I could go out!' lol. Even in the few 'glam' scenes I've done, no contouring. Funny, I also call it 'drag makeup' since I believe I heard it was mainly invented/popularized by them.

    What bothers me more than filters (which are too obvious many times) is when some skinfluencers despite having fillers, regular derm appointments, and skin procedures (what have you) and they still claim that it’s because of specific products or a routine. Instead of disclosing what really helps (like prescription products or derms) they use it to promote sponsored products. I would suggest Cassandra making a video like that...

    The way you say women need make-up at work to look "professional and presentable" also shows how ingrained this is into our minds. When I started a new job, I wore full make-up the first few days, something I literally never do, before I felt like I was not enough, looked too young and not professional. I hate that we have to wear makeup and do our hair even for the most basic works. I work as an architect in a construction, with all the dirt, the concrete, polution the hot weather, the sweat they still wanted me to wear makeup. All male architects and engineers "suggested" that i need to at least wear "natural makeup" i asked them why and they could never give me an answer, they just knew that as a women i should do it. I never wore makeup, i wore a messy bun underneath my safety helmet and thats it, my work was still as valuable. We need to change our minds about it.

The real challenge is to catch the small imperfections and silly faces, wrinkles and hairs, pimples and ditches and scars and so on. This is what makes portraits alive and this also helped me a bit to appreciate the different looks ppl have and to get myself away from that filter perfection standards. I tell people this all the time- the best gift an art degree gave me was to appreciate every kind of age, body, gender expression etc... and that the most beautiful portraits never came from the most "conventionally attractive" person sitting for the session. It was always a face that had time etched into and distinctive features.
      I asked my friend's 13 yr old niece what her favorite tree and flower were and then asked "do you wish the flower looked like the tree" and she said of course not trees and flowers are different- "Is the flower less beautiful because the tree exists" she replies no that's silly. So I followed with "so do you really wish you looked like that tiktok person - do you wish your best friend Emily looked like her?" and she had an Aha of- No my friend emily is really pretty in her own way and I said so are you. I think that influencers like you are becoming more popular, helping more people realize celebrities are not what they seem
it’s just sad because kids and teenagers are so influenced by social media that I’m not sure how this cycle will stop..just keep putting your beautiful content out there! Thank you

    My brother came into the room while I was watching nikki and he immediately went "ewww, what wrong with her chin. The filter is awful". I don't know why he is so good at spotting that, I didn't notice 😅

    You have no idea how great it feels when someone tells you most things you've been hating about yourself are part of being a totally normal human being with average skin. I was having an awful week and this just made me feel so much better. You are very funny and naturally charming. Loved the video

    I just found your channel about a month ago as I was researching serums and creams that might be helpful for my aging skin. I first saw the natural skin face that you show in your recent videos. Until I looked into some older videos you reference periodically. I love that you look so much better to me with natural skin and less makeup. I love that you keep it real. And I love solid, scientific information. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I am a crazy cat lady, business owner and athlete. #unfiltered

    I notice since TikTok, blur filters have became a huge thing. Even now, most of the popular and viral TikToks always contain them. ALSO Hyram 100% uses the blur filter on his videos and you always catch his necklace chain glitching on his neck. This is where I draw the line, because its not right to promote skincare, including his own brand, using blur filters on their videos.

      He was using filters in all of his brand videos, too. Very disappointed that so few people are willing to call Hyram out when he's potentially causing a lot of harm to people's self esteem

    WooooooooW!!!!!! I don't know if to laugh hysterically or feel SOOOOOOOOOOOOO sad for these people who must think they are absolutely pathetic looking in real life that they would resort to such extreme measures to "look good". I LOVE that you made this "expose" video Cassandra. Bravo!
