Skin care red flag....all the influencers reviewing the same product within days of each other.

And saying the same thing!
Haha soooo trueđ
Yes. The Sam bunting moisturiser case in point
@@vhayek68 Yep, it's obvious they're giving the provided talking points from the brands.
this whole "all natural, clean, no preservative" stuff bother me. I don't wanna buy 200mL of a product, paying "clean beauty" prices, only to have it go bad within half the time!
Yep that isnât talked about enough. Also say no to preservative free makeup! Hell no lol
Seriously. And saying this all the while these guys are surrounded by devices, taking wonder drugs, and getting medical procedures.
The "clean, non toxic" mindset gives me the ick đŹđźâđš
I can add another red flag when it comes to skincare and makeup (or any other product) - if the brand is an MLM, I won't buy it.
what's mlm?
â@unnatichaudhary1195 multi level marketing. Pyramid scheme. Like Seint. You know..."COME JOIN MY TEAM AND YOU CAN BE A MILLIONAIRE LIKE ME!" Those people that spend all day teying to get people to buy a starter package (any job that you have to PAY to be a part of is a scam and a pyramid scheme) and their focus is getting people to join their team, not selling any actual product. Because you make money based on how many people you got to join and the money THEY INVEST, not sales. And they have a quota to keep or they owe money. People have lost their houses joining an MLM. Lost everything. Even their friends and family.
@@unnatichaudhary1195 Multi level marketing. Like mary kay, avon. Pyramid schemes
â@@unnatichaudhary1195mlm = multi-level marketing = legal pyramid scheme
@@unnatichaudhary1195 Multi-Level Marketing, basically a pyramid scheme but with products
Hate it when something is marketed with a certain ingredient as the "star" only to find it on the very bottom of ingredients list.
And brands do this all the time. As Cassandra says, "Turn and Learn."
Iâm a medical professional. For me a red flag is promises for major skin changes or very fast results.
The reality is any results take weeks to months. Also topical skin care, while very important, will not ever give you drastic changes.
One exception I personally experienced, I had a terrible herpes infection that had covered my whole chin in 2010. I applied bentonite clay a few days in a row and it was healed, smooth skin. The clay also gave almost instant relief from the itching which was very bad.
Excellent point!
My biggest red flag is the one-person indie brands who try to demonize large cosmetic companies. These indies say: "the big mega-corporate capitalists are selling you toxic things that will ruin your skin - but we use only pure, natural things like lemon juice, and we avoid nasty preservatives."
First, not all indie brands do this. I'm an amateur formulator myself ... I follow all the accepted practices of the large labs, and if I can't safely make something in my clean kitchen, I won't make it at all.
Large companies can afford $$$$$ fully equipped labs and to pay PhD cosmetic chemists. They can afford to try out hundreds of formulae, and can afford to test them all.
Large companies have access to ingredients and methods we can't do at home. [I can't buy or stabilize retinol.]
Large companies are in business to increase their sales. If they ruin customers' skin, they will lose sales. It's in their best interests to make good products.
That lemon juice I mentioned some indies use ... lemon juice is acidic enough to hurt skin, it has sugar and other things that encourage spoilage, and chemicals derived from lemon juice (citric acid) work much better.
Also lemon juice under UV is super damaging. There's a reason people used to put lemon juice in their hair to lighten it if they were outside a lot. đ”
I love my friends because whenever my skin improves they make sure to hype me up because they know I get excited when things clear up, but they NEVER comment on it getting worse. They will still hype me up and tell me I'm pretty đ They just won't make skin-specific remarks.
Good friends!
Wow, girl. Over 17 years of knowledge. I love it, good for you
OMG the "Inkey List" brand now makes sense! XD
Right? đ
wait.... đ€Š that just clicked..... freaking puntastic geniuses!!!!
Literally she said that and I was like "...OH"
I went to kiss my bf and he said: Ew, you have pores on your face!. Now he's an ex.
People who judge you for using drugstore skincare is s hugeee red flag not everyone can afford high end or even mid range products also influencers who say things like omg this is a miracle product or you only need this product for an xyz problem skin problems are complex and you might need to do a lot more than just slap a $100 cream
Inkey List is very affordable and has some great products. Then there are expensive ones that you pay lots of money to have the brand on your counter.
I use Dove Soap Bar and Palmers cocoa butter oil. Then a spf $30 from ELF after letting the oil set.
$25 routine(roughly)
I like brands that have been around for decades. Dove was founded in 1957 and Palmers 1840s I think. Elf was founded in 2004, but their products are good imo.
What people don't understand, or don't want to believe, is that drugstore products and more expensive brands generally have the same major ingredients and similar formulas. When I say "major ingredients", I mean the first 4 to 6 ingredients on the ingredients list which are generally very mundane ingredients like water, glycerin, petrolatum (aka petroleum jelly, aka Vaseline), mineral oil, beeswax, etc. When you compare ingredients lists, you learn this. All you get with more expensive products is a dusting of ingredients with botanical names that sound impressive, fancy packaging, and a prestigious brand name.
In my country drugstore products are sold with high end prices, we don't have the privilege of saving when buying skincare or makeup. That's another level of red flag , when companies not only are shady about the claimings of their products, but also they sell the same drugstore products 4 times their price as high end products on developing countries.
Thank you for not demonizing preservatives! I take a while to use products, generally speaking, so things with short shelf lives are a major no-go for me. I do sometimes use things past their expiration date, but I use common sense that if it looks or smells off, I toss it. I'd rather have wasted a few bucks throwing away a product than pay hundreds for an ER visit!
Dr Vanita Rattanâs sunscreen brand âInzincableâ claims to leave no white cast (itâs a mineral sunscreen SPF 50, she claims itâs good esp for skin of color) and she has a video of her and some relatives âreapplyâ the sunscreen over makeup but they disappear into the bathroom, donât film them reapplying it and come out saying they applied it over their make-up and they looked flawless. Well I tried Inzincable and it leaves a greasy white cast. Iâm sad for this because I really trusted her advice on all skincare but I no longer watch her content. Just my experience, maybe others have had success?

đ
Well that stinks. I liked her too!
I started watching her channel but started to feel like she only started the channel to promote her brand.
That's what happen when a person of dark skin tries mineral sunscreens that are not tinted. Black people tend to feel better finish with organic sunscreens.
Yeah she is a grifter. Uses a lot of fear mongering for skin of colour and then promotes her own brand
Before and after is the worst especially ai generating fake before and after is gonna make it alot worst
I never had acne until my late 20's đąand had this boyfriend who made me cry because of my acne. I broke up with him after crying a lot with one of his comments since he keeps getting meaner and joking about my acne seriously is such a red flag like people change he just didn't love me and couldn't bother to say it
He probably raised your cortisol levels. How is your skin doing now? Any improvement?
Verbal abuse is a red flag in relationships and an excellent reason to dump him! Good for you! Don't put up with cr*p like that, ever! You don't need anyone bad enough to put up with that kind of behavior.
Basically all celebrity skincare lines are a big red flag đ©
Agreed. They're generally cash grabs.
Speaking of JavaScript, another red flag is when a product is always on sale for 30 days with a bogus count down on the website. - False urgency / scarcity.
"dermatologist tested" has gotten me before đ thank you for all the information!!
HEAVY agree on the relationship stuff! My last ex would make comments about my acne, not like "ew your skin is nasty" but he would just always mention it and say weird things as a "joke" that made me feel bad, even though I told him many times it made me uncomfortable and I didn't want him to. The relationship ended up being awful (for multiple reasons). My current partner has never made me feel that way, the only time we talk about it is when *I* bring it up. He has always made me feel beautiful despite my acne and acne scars. We've been together 5 years now (:
Your former partner showed you who he was, and you believed him. Good for you! He showed bad character which can't be treated or cured, unlike acne!
My skin care red flag is 'exzema cure' or people talking about it curing it. As someone who has suffered so badly and knows there is no cure not only is it upsetting it makes me really angry!
I donât know how old you are or how long youâve had it but I had hand eczema so bad for the last 15 years that I always had some sort of sore on my hands. Couldnât even get lemon near my hands when cooking or it would practically burn my skin off. I donât have a cure for you so donât know why Iâm even responding, but I guess your comment just resonated with me since Iâve had such issues with it. AnywayâŠjust wanted to say that I have no idea why, but Iâve had no issue after at least a year. Can even put acids on my hands now so there is hope! I doubt itâs any type of skincare though, just some sort of inflammatory response happening in our body.
All I can say is, I feel your pain. I've dealt with eczema for 50 years, and I've learned some things to keep from getting it, and I have 2 prescriptions to use if I get it anyway. The main things for me are to keep my skin well moisturized and don't use products with fragrance and irritants such as isopropyl alcohol. Oh, and use gloves for dishes and cleaning. But sometimes I get it anyway.
I love your energy in this video!
My red flag isn't specific to skincare but anything from a designer brand, or a celebrity brand--esoecially a brand that centers the celebrity. This goes double for anything the Kardashians touch.
as someone who works retail for a beauty brand it kills me when someone asks for something with no chemicals or no 'bad' chemicals, but then don't have any examples of which chemicals theyre trying to avoid!!
wait until they learn that water is a chemical.
Well, they must be avoiding water because water is a chemical!
One of my old teachers sells beauty products for one of those pyramid schemes and in her before vs after she always does slightly different angles so it can look like itâs amazing. A few I remember seeing is she had the camera angle down then up to show the lash growth serum. Then had a picture of her hair then the after she was tilting her head back some so you would think the hair growth was amazing
My skincare red flag is a "miracle product" that is cheap generic moisturizer + X plant extract + different fragrances, which is often more irritation and a higher price tag.
The green flag is the simple effective less "sexy" pharmacy hypoallergenic generic option with the bigger container.
I second this. In the early days of Whole Foods, I got a lotion hoping it would reduce my eczema in highschool there, and it had WAY too many essential oils like lavender and others, and I broke out in hives all over the next day. It was like 2007 so this was about when the wild west era of clean beauty brands was just beginning.
Preach!!!
The whole "clean beauty" or "anti sunscreen" movement is really bugging me. It spread so much false information that can cause so much damage. Clean beauty usually means full of essential oils and short shelf life, which can cause a lot of irritation and skin damage. No sunscreen is full of the "no chemical" mindset or inspired by the "clean beauty" mindset, which can cause cancer. I rather use sunscreen than get cancer
So true about "clean" beauty. To me, a product isn't "clean" unless it has no fragrant ingredients or added fragrance.
I'd like to know more about toothpaste ratings! First time I've heard of those aspects!
Oh I remember a couple years ago seeing ads for a cheap ripoff of the Nuface that straight up used footage of Dr Dray's review of the REAL Nuface, in which she did not give it a ringing endorsement. I just don't trust social media ads.
Cassandra was the FIRST CZcamsr I found in 2011 or 2012 as Diamondandheels14. I think I found her through an article. I was obsessed. Thank you for bringing me into the CZcams beauty community! It changed my life.
Product doesn't have a recommended usage time/regimen, if your product is supposed to be used every second of every day it's either doing nothing or you want me to buy more all the time. I can use it when I want but knowing for what kind of use it's formulated is so helpful.
Love Dr. Idris and would love to see a collab! Thanks for all the great tips.
I second this!
noooooooo
Phenoxyethanol is a lot different to salt. Itâs a chemical and there are articles on its safety to rub into your skin daily. -1% is ok but try ing to find out much is in a formula - just canât in many cases
I had an argument with a youtuber that insisted that rubbing Frozen cucumber on your face works because they are full of antioxidants... yes if you eat it!
1:55 OMG such a huge pet peeve of mine! I see SO many before and after photos with different lighting
I love that you used the red flag guy for this video đ
Love this!!! I wish I had your channel to guide me as a teenager but Iâm so glad to have it as an adult! đâ€
Going full Cassandra today and I đit. Amazing video today. One pet hate of mine is going to a spa and having a facial, and it always goes the same way, them putting the hard sell on you and telling you how dehydrated your skin is. Itâs also embarrassing when I have taken clients for a Spa Day and they feel obligated to buy something they were put under so much pressure (Inevitably form a really expensive line). Now I tell them upfront absolutely no selling unless the guest asks you. Unfortunately in South Africa, beauty therapists are not that well paid and are put in the position of trying to earn commission on product sales.
This is also true in the US. Spa employees are generally pressured to sell whatever line the spa recommends. Or so I've heard. I don't have facials because my dermatologist told me not to.
@@20thcenturyrelic probably the same everywhere hey. I just do my own facials at home, itâs way more relaxing đ
Thank you Cassandra â€
I think you should go over the difference between real and fake reviews, and how to spot the difference.
When any products say FRAGRANCE FREE, but if you look at the ingredients, you find parfum đ€
I hate when they list the ingredients with only the scientific name, I shouldnât have to google 20 ingredients to find out that theyâre just a nut oil or something very simple and generic.
The other ingredient list thing I hate is how many different names are used for petroleum products to try and confuse people into using something carcinogenic. Especially when itâs products marketed for babies đ
If you're talking about petroleum jelly, the American Academy of Dermatology recommends it. See their website. I doubt they'd recommend a carcinogenic product.
The highlights look bee-you-tea-full!
LMAO! I have been picking apart those before and after photos for years now! SO MANY are the same photo! Even when its not necessary!!! Like on hair daye boxes!!! Like, you didnt even dye their hair?!?đ€Łđ€Łđ€Ł
Love your personality
So glad to see this video, keep up the good work đđ
One of my red flags: when a product claims to do too many things. I'm sure they're area lot of good products out there with multiple active ingredients that can address more than one condition, but I'm not believing that a small $10 tube of something is going to fix every problem under the sun and then some!
This was good. We are all searching for products that really provide results. It's so easy to be roped in by misleading advertising.
Cassandra I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE you!! LMAO at this great video you made. You go girl and keep them coming. Big Hugs â€â€
Cassandra I love your videos, very informative and useful. I have a request - Can you please dial down the quacking sounds in between, they are such anxiety triggers for me and I have to pause the video a few times to calm myself and complete it.
Same lol either that or donât swear
Iâm going back to the basics this summer and throwing out most serums and toners/essences. I am using a gentle cleanser, sunscreen and a face mask once a week. Also making sure I drink 2 liters of water a day!
Liking your new hair color!
Products that are recommended for EVERYONE! EVERYONE needs this! Well does my late 30's, sensitive, oily, acne prone skin need it? Or does that 16 year old? Or the 65 year old? Or the dry skin ladies? Or the sun damaged? I love reviews and products that are specific or include caveats to recommendations.
Love u n ur videos ur literally beautiful inside and out â„
Well...if I did not know how you felt about things before, I sure know now! #No holding back!!đâ€
I met this person for the first time, talked with him for like 20 minutes. He started giving me dieting advice! I had just shrunk 14 sizes in 9 months, and this jerk is giving me dieting advice! I'm an honest to G-d medium. And he's calling me fatâœ
As for how I shrunk, I was large because I had a grumbling appendix. If dieting or exercise does not work for, go to your doctor. If you can't afford too, or your doctor is criminally negligent. Get something Iodized, like potassium per Iodine, Do Not Use More Than The Recommended Dose. If that works, you have a thyroid issue. My appendix problem (technically a thyroid issue) was solved with antibiotics for a rooster attack, so I avoided surgery, Yay.
Also physical therapy for my injured back, caused by the appendix problem.
I did that exact thing when I went outside + looked at my makeup in the rear view mirror đ§đ”đ€

How can we tell if a product has preservatives or not? What ingredients should we look for?
I'm glad you're talking about hair loss. My daughter is on a swim team and has recently been dropping a lot of hair. It can be from hair tie, cap or chlorine. Please help

I use a lot of good molecules products with very good results made in Korea. I don't know if you know much about them but they show ingredients and cruelty free and I believe vegan but I can't remember right now, everything is unscented. I use face wash, eye cream, and serums from them and seen results in lightening my dark spots n acne scars.my face is also extremely smooth when I use them and I even use it on my hands and arms to heal cat scratches scars and them to just heal better. I've been very impressed and I have a hard time with skincare with very sensitive skin
Kenzzi had an ipl cooling device on sale for black Friday. The cooling lasted maybe 2 minutes, and the continuous flash button seldom worked. And I didn't notice any difference in my hair growth. What do you think about the ilso melting sebum softener? (this question is for everyone who tested the product) đ
What you recommend for oily skin ?
Hi Cassandra, all sweeties,
I'm almost 65 and never used skincare, only cold water on my face + I did never go in the sun because I have a bit of vitiligo (some spot when I have been in the sun (walking and no shadow!), I get white and brown spots, very annoying and this is why I never went into the sun as I could prevent it. I have combination skin BTW.
I also had acne and ulcers, even with multiple heads, even now I can get them!! But since a couple of years I use skincare for that from the farmacy, like f.i.: 'ROC', 'LA ROCHE-POSAY', 'LOUIS WIDMER'(advice from dermatologist) but I never used or use anything for wrinkles or such. And people think I'm much younger than 64!! Almost no wrinkles and proud of that. Cold water is the best when you are young and have no skinproblems. Do you have skinproblems? Go to a professional, do not experiment on your own sweeties!! And listen to Cassandra!!!!!
BTW:
advice I've got from the dermatologist (for my skin because it can cause irritantion and yes, acne (on my skin!): make sure there is no perfume in the product you buy.
And not all skins are the same, what is good for my skin is not allways good for your skin!!!
Lots of love from an old rebel-Pinkie
Can you please tell me what I should do for my rice polish exfoliate from Tatcha that comes in a form of powder . I don't normally do this, and I really love your videos discussing what to look for in skincare to avoid scams and personal injury, but I need to give some constructive criticism about the production. I find the background soundtrack to be very distracting and a little irritating. That's not something that normally irritates me, I'm not overly prone to sensory issues, but I had to stop a little before half way because I was getting a headache. It's a very good and informative video, but I thought it might be useful to speak up in case people with greater sensory issues are experiencing similar.
Absolutely agree!
Maybe you could try tweaking your device's sound equalizer?
I didn't even noticed there was background music watching it on my phone until I read your comment and still had to turn all the volume up to pick it

A huge red flag: when a product that was in the bargain bin or bottom shelf and was given bad reviews by influencers, ups their prices and are now getting rave reviews by those same influencers.
On a side note, your face is beautiful but it's not looking it's best with that lighter hair colour. It washes you out. You glow when you have darker hair. And I know you are struggling with hair loss, but have you considered simply trying a side part as a new style while you continue to work on your hair regrowth journey?
I have to tell you...if you are struggling with hair loss, I would advise you to try stop using dry shampoo. Just try it for 3 to 6 months. It might help.

You will likely not find independent research on a product. Most independent researchers will only look at ingredients or new delivery methods etc, because that is more widely applicable to the scientific community.
Lemon is a red flag for me! My skin DOES NOT agree with it. So I avoid those products. :)
lemon is a red flag for everyone
While I agree the whole telling your viewers that customers from other places bought this n that is annoying n possibly living. Not long ago I was on a site n I had few items in my cart bit the main one I needed got bought out while it was in my cart. I just left because I only picked out a few more items for free shipping but lost the item I needed most. I'm sorry I can't remember the product. It just made me wonder if they do tell you people are really buying even if they are not all buying while you're shopping right then n there.
what is drop shipping?
where they buy cheap wholesale from china, slap a fake brand name sticker on it and sell it for 5 times the price on amazon and websites
theres no regulations for selling stuff online so if you want something nice/legit research the brand and buy directly from their website or a in-person store

Why donât âtheyâ regulate these kinds of products better? Itâs still the wild wild west over here. No our makeup doesnât contain lead anymore but still itâs pretty bad
ok so - "medical esthetician" is actually not a legal term or license. this is actually so frustrating to me as an esthetician who knows we all have the same education. even if we have continued education there is still no "medical esthetician" license, which in a way, is deceptive to make you sound more educated than other estheticians...
I understand that you do you research and I love your videos because you are very thorough - yet - throwing around "medical esthetician" is infuriating
I'm tired of seeing knock-off viral products
