    Even if you are aware that there is a filter, the unrealistic image is still going to impact you psychologically. Maybe less so, but like you said "I still want to look that way" - a lot of people deny this because they don't realise that this impact on your perception can be really subtle.

      I agree, but I’m scared this might cause a downward slope 😭 what if the government uses the same arguments for filters and photoshop as the same arguments for makeup usage. Yeah, makeup can be pretty obvious to notice in images, but there are also a lot of men on TikTok (of course right) who are like “makeup is catfishing” or whatnot or young women trying to emulate a makeup look as their natural look. I’m probably just reading too much into it though.

    Honestly I like it. When I got into skincare I was lost... and it the constant ads and influencers who would do a fake before and after, that made it ridiculously hard to navigate as to what was real what I should actually spend my money on.

  • @TheVildeStar
    @TheVildeStar Pƙed 3 lety +166

    In Norway there has been multiple debates about this and it started mainly because of an influencer named Kristin Gjelsvik who has fought for this! Because of a TV show called Innafor the behind the scenes of influencers has been shown to the public. It shows how «fake» everything is and how much advertisement is coming out that consumers have no clue about. So it is being talked about much more now than a few years ago
    There’s no specific numbers of what they can be fined, however the laws do refer to France which fines up to 44 533 UDS or up to 30% of what it cost to produce the advertisement. If an advertisement is not marked correctly the first fine is 2000 ish UDS, and for influencers that are being looked at closely can get fined for multiple ads from stories, posts, videos etc.

Therefor they can not promote plastic surgery, diet pills, alcohol beverages or gambling of any sorts. If they are tagging a company in the post, they have to mark it also as advertising. The influensers that have broken this law in the past have been fined 2000 dollar per post. So I guess that goes for photoshopped/filtert posts too.

    I grew up barely watching tv or reading magazines and my mom hardly pushed me to follow the beauty standaes of my time(look slim/skinny, low cut jeans and paris hilton stuff) but I still went shopping to a mall or department store, I still watched music videos and I was still exposed to those influences. I was mostly free from them but I was still affected by it but it was just way more subtle like wishing my body looked skinny and androgynous even though I knew it wasn't possible. I lost a lot of weight for health reasons once and many people commented how I looked so cool and pretty but something I noticed is tht besides the convenience of fitting into clothes better I didn't feel any better and I certainly didnt think my body looked pretty because unconsciously I was craving the skinny and barely any curves type of look models and parish hilton has. It's insidious and it's unhealthy.

    Yaaaas. This country really needs to enforce something like this. I think disclosure is so important. I also feel people don’t realize how our brain interrupts visual cues. When there is detail shown, such as pores, it indicates the image is closer. Sooo that’s why it looks odd, when it’s clearly a close image of someone’s face and those “details” are not present.
    I don’t see anything wrong with editing a photo to brighten ones face (adjusting the focal view of the image) or simply adjusting color templates. Blurring an image to an extent where there are no shadows at all, and changing the physical aspects of ones body is where I would like to draw the line (hehe).
    Not everyone can tell when something has been edited or even how it’s possible, and that’s why it’s so dangerous! I agree.

Will this law open up social media platforms to lawsuits or fines if they allow photos without a disclosure, or with Norway have to restrict these social media platforms in their country? I am all for the disclosure, but I'm not sure how effective it will be in a world where the vast majority of social media use is in the US.

    I agree with Oni Girl. People get a subliminal message. I remember wondering why I would buy clothing and it never looked like it did on the model. Then, I was in NYC one day walking by a photo shoot where I saw how many pins were in the back of the dress making it fit the model perfectly. So even a boxy dress they give some form to. So, even though I now know it, I can still catch myself wondering why the clothes don't fit like they "should." I also think of the controversy surrounding Katie Couric where some magazine cover editor made her thinner--and she's not a fashion icon or anything like that--she's a professional woman supposedly on the cover because of her professional achievements. So, the thought out in the wider society is that this is what is best, this is the ideal you should strive for. I'm not sure how we go about changing that. But, certainly being upfront about the filters and airbrushing, etc, is at least a start.

    Yes! Pls, even in YT..woah, so DETAILED.
    I just didn't realize that much...I also do think this is something that I really don't like online and on ads, that I know, but what about others? At least with this law, this knowledge can now circulate more...
    when I first knew filters, it was definitely bec. of an app on a phone, it definitely made me wander about cosmetics, but I knew I couldn't afford them, and as I try to avoid it, I heard about it being unnecessary so then I knew how it could be degrading so up to this day I still remind myself not to use excessive filters even tho they're interesting. This law will definitely help ads as well, and build that trust again, I look forward to that and will help minimalize the modern exaggeration of the beauty industry or any other industry...'Edited Imagery' yeah...Yep, let's keep skincare better...

    I have zero social media aside from the youtube account that I’m watching this video on and I STILL find myself being heavily effected by excessive filters and facetuning in casual ads, youtube thumbnails, etc. and the outrageous standards they set. I can only imagine how much it impacts people, specifically young people, who are heavily immersed in social medias such as instagram. I’m in support of this 100%!

    This type of stuff has been moderated for a good while now in the U.K. At least in terms of TV adverts, if they’re still a thing? (I only watch Netflix, et al)
    I remember as a child realising toothpaste adverts on TV no longer had the animated representation of the toothpaste remove ALL plaque, they started leaving some on the teeth even after their product did it’s work to more accurately represent that no toothpaste is actually removing 100%.
    Same with dishwasher tablets etc. All adverts started having disclaimers in them and having less “perfect” imagery all around. More realism.
    Filters should be disclosed on any sponsored content, any image manipulation or alteration should be.
    I recognise when it’s there and it doesn’t affect me terribly so, but there’s a generation of people growing into these filters that have never seen content without them. That’s got to be tough on the self esteem and teenage angst!

    There's so many aspects to this. This law is very much needed. It would be pretty amazing if it was implemented in most countries. BUT... who's gonna police this? To start with, unless it's specifically stated, pretty much no advertisement is unedited. Even the ones that look raw have been edited to some degree. The sheer amount of material makes it almost impossible to enforce punishment for not disclosing it and they would also need HIGHLY trained professionals who are able to tell. Or I guess they would do audits comparing raw material with published images? But even then, it would take so much time, it's just not possible. I think that people would start to be sneaky and maybe opt for better retouchers and being sneaky, maybe even requiring them to sign NDA's so that their portfolio doesn't give away that the imagery was altered and avoid fines. This of course only works if audits are based on suspicion and not just random. However, I guess better and less retouching would sort of help with what this law is trying to achieve.
    Funnily enough, CVS came out with the no retouching thing, but it still doesn't mean no retouching. There is a whole list of guidelines on what you can and can not retouch. It still allows light retouching, but to be fair, it is very very minimal and only things that could be corrected on set, plus a tiny bit more.
    So yeah, all in all great idea, but I don't believe much will come out of it (especially I think you might be right about lobbying...)

  • @elminx1
    @elminx1 Pƙed 3 lety +1

    I like to make a distinction between "photoshop" which is a tool that can be used very effectively by a trained individual and a "filter" which is generally applied half hazardly. This is me as a photographer talking. Photoshop is GREAT - it's an amazing tool.
    Truth be told, I will almost never post a photo of somebody "unedited" (people aren't my subject of choice by any means) and that's because cameras are not great at capturing people's skin. They can make somebody's skin look WORSE than it looks in person. I think that a small amount of careful editing to even out the way that the light catches on one part of a face weirdly, mild smoothing of the skin, removing a few pimples, is totally fine. Even for influencers. (Unless you are selling a skincare product and claiming that you can get that effect - that is totally different)
    When you are changing the shape of somebody's body or of their face? That's weird. But even then, it can fix a wonky camera angle where you look disproportionate.
    I just think that people who don't like filters sometimes get obsessed with the idea that "out of the camera" is reality BUT it's not. The camera is only capturing light - your OG image can look VERY different from the space that she shot in. And editing it back to what you shot should be totally okay.

      This is where it starts, but where it ends is anyone's guess. In can be disappointing even in none human subjects. Granted, angles do put a better perspective on pics but when you actually look at the object , rather than appreciate it for what it is , there's just disappointment.

    I think this is an amazing step in the right direction because if brands and influencers are forced to disclose filtering and/or eventually not allowed to modify content that is used for advertising purposes, then brands will face pressure to produce products that actually deliver measurable results
 like can you imagine that kind of future? One where you wouldn’t have to question the integrity of a brand before considering whether a product is worth your money

    I think the law that you have to disclose filters, photoshop, etc are great. I can’t always tell when someone is using a filter or if it’s edited unless it really obvious. As a mother of 3 girls and 1 boy I worry they’ll see these images and feel like they’re not good enough. I know I don’t feel good enough. I have no issue with people using filters, I use filters a lot. Maybe I shouldn’t though, it may be adding to the problem that all us “normal” people are using filters a lot. As you can see in my profile pic that it is edited. Food for thoughtđŸ€” I love when you and other influencers bring light to this problem. I love your videos btw. You seem very relatable, which is what I love ❀ Also, I’ve learned a lot from you. Keep up the good work girl! You are beautiful❀

    I absolutely Love that you disclose when you use a filter and allow us to see your unfiltered photos! I am personally seeking out those who disclose when they use filters. I don't begrudge people who use them, just tell us that's what you're doing. Don't try to tell me it's all due to this skincare/primer/foundation you're using, when it's really just a filter. To me, that's deceitful and those who do that should be called out on it!
