    The best way to stop the clunky 4-5 shift is to wait until about 60 before you shift it. It’s because the gear spacing is wide between those gears.

      If that would solve the problem, that's what the technician who test-rode the bike would have said, not "wear thicker-soled boots."

    • @bertsbike
      @bertsbike  Před 3 lety +1

      Glad to hear that! It’s a great bike. Just like anything YMMV. I think mine had the gear box “issue”. It may have just been the way it is, but in the end it wasn’t a good #1 for me. Would’ve kept it but the more I ride, I tend to prefer being up higher either straight or leaned forward for my #1. If I get another Indian it will probably be the FTR. Thanks for watching!

    • @wrzl1675
      @wrzl1675 Před 3 lety +1

      I think this is more the owner than the bike. Mine has had zero issues and my dealership experience has been the exact opposite.

    • @bertsbike
      @bertsbike  Před 3 lety +2

      @@wrzl1675 That’s awesome your bike is doing well! Just giving my 2c on my bike and my owner experience. Your experience will be different. It should be. Different dealer, Bike and owner. With that said: My starter did fail and was replaced. My gear box was definitely rough, confirmed by other riders. The dealer did tell me it was “normal” even tho they did not test drive it. The clutch cable did stretch dramatically... The starter/cable/gearbox are widely known issues. Like I said above: YMMV. Thanks for watching!

      I have 26k on my 17 Sixty. One coolant issue, but otherwise just putting 10k miles a year on it. I bought it with 5k on it which allowed to me do what I want to it and stay in budget. All bikes need tweaking and personalization. The only "performance" thing I've done is put progressive springs in the front forks. Noticeable improvement in the front end.

    New to me, never respond to these postings. I ride a Vulcan and a Scout Sixty to work as many days as possible here in Houston, Texas when the weather permits. 60 miles a day per trip. I could wax pontific about it all but, you are 100% correct about the starter! I got hit for full price on that one because the serial number was 3 digits over the recall. It totally died like, 2 months after warranty and they gave me the finger. The weird color on the speedometer at night. What was in their mind! -- you can't even read the thing! I memorized the notches so I wouldn't go to jail or get run off the road in the HOV lane. 5th gear, I have never, ever, had a problem on my Scout 60 engaging or using any of the gears. Easy solution, get a heel toe shifter. I have problems here in Houston when it is 100 degrees and everybody is driving crazy in their air-conditioned cars but, it has always shifted on target. The suspension, well, you are accurate I definitely agree with your assessment. You should have mentioned the brakes. You really need to give some space when riding, which is always the norm. But my Indian 60 does not have ABS. It is an older bike like it's old-man owner! LOL! I wanted an Indian motorcycle and when I bought it, I knew all the silliness that wasn't being told to me by the dealer. Easy way to communicate, when I'm tired and just just need to get to work-- I ride the Vulcan. When I want to ride and live to ride- I ride the Indian. I guess I am not sure how to put a price tag on that.

    • @bertsbike
      @bertsbike  Před 2 měsíci

      Appreciate the watch and the comment. It was a fun bike and I probably should've held on to mine for much longer. You are right about the breaks. Mine was an ABS model. I'm a pretty modest rider so I never had to engage them. For the type of engine it is tho, it's got lots of get up and go and feel that Indian could've done better matched the break and suspension to the peppy cruiser that it is. Ride safe my friend.

    Thanks for the review. I have a 2017 Scout 60. I now have 14000 mi on it. Have had NO problems. Don’t actually notice the notchy shift into 5th gear. Maybe a little but very minor. Yes the suspension isn’t Ideal and yes, sometimes I pull myself up off the seat for a hard bump. Takes some effort but at 76 yrs old I can still do it. I have never felt any shimmy at all at speed. Maybe balance issue of some sort on tire/ wheel. Yes the clutch is a bit heavy ( never have had to adjust it) but my senior citizen hands don’t have to much trouble with it. But thanks for the after market clutch cable tip. Sounds like something to do some day. I have fitted the stock bags, and engine bars with hiway pegs. Allows for some position change. Also got a Corbin custom bucket type seat. Love it. It’s is bit firm but fits so well that I can ride for hours. Test drove a Scout non-60. Yeah, more power but just thought that the sixty was still very fast. 0-60 (can hit 60 in 2nd gear) is in the mid 4 sec area. Plenty! Faster than many Harleys. I will never drive in the triple digits. Just no need. Crankin through the gears up to 80 is plenty! And BTW never miss 5th gear. Gears are so tall that I often skip 3rd and just shift 4X. Again, no problems, just routine maintenance. I have no desire for a bigger bike. Don’t plan on big cross country rides. Not that it couldn’t do it. I’m sure a big road bike would be more comfortable. But not my thing. 650 lbs is plenty of bike. Hey, I’m an old man now! Ha ha. (Don’t tell anyone).

    The Scout is a great looking motorcycle, I've never owned an Indian. One thing I didn't like is the way the handlebars come back to meet you. They remind me of a roto tiller and that's work. What is your experience with the clutch lever on your scout?

    • @bertsbike
      @bertsbike  Před 3 lety

      @@eddug4350 Yup, the scout has a longer throw than any Japanese bike. That doesn’t really bother me but mine felt very inconsistent. Sometimes smoooth. Sometimes clunky. They also have a very long linkage so that may have something to do with it also. Since the bobber model is the sixty and skips 5th. That is an even longer throw there too. I would say that if there are two of the same color that you like drive em both. You’ll be surprised how different they feel.
      American bikes typically have more positive feeling gear boxes. That doesn’t bother me. Just make sure you pick one that’s consistent feeling on the test drive. It’ll break in, but not THAT much.

    1 of the problems with the Indian bobber models suspension wise other than the crappy valving in the shocks and forks, the springs in the forks and shocks are rated for someone that is 250lbs-300lbs. I had a Race Tech shop do my entire suspension on my bobber. They changed the spring rating for my weight, and they also changed the valving in the rear shocks and installed their gold series cartridge emulators in the forks. MASSIVE difference in the suspension and handling. No more lifting for every bump.

      The only 3 bikes in the bobber class that really needs no suspension work is the Triumph Bobber, Honda Rebel, and the Yamaha Bolt R Spec. All 3 doesn't have as much hp and torque as the Indian does though. Suspensions are really nice though.
      My next bobber I will be adding to my collection is going to be the new Triumph Bobber simply because I own a fully restored 71 Triumph Bonneville and a 72 Triumph Tiger. Both are 650's. The new Triumph Bobbers have really nice brakes as well. Bike looks sick all together.

    'Nice evening ride. But what started out as a positive review became an unfortunate ownership experience, regarding the transmission. Someone below says it's because the gears are widely spaced, but it still shouldn't grind going into gear. And to have to push the dealer's tech to simply test-ride the bike (because he already knew he'd say "it's normal") is infuriating, and insulting that his only recommendation is that you "wear thicker-soled boots." I once bought a new Harley that soon displayed a problem the dealer couldn't/wouldn't fix, even though the tech admitted there was an unusual problem. After multiple trips to the dealer, 25 miles away, I sold it two months later. Always test--ride first, and "Buy the one you test-ride" is wise advice!

    • @bertsbike
      @bertsbike  Před 3 lety +2

      Well, to make a long story short… I probably should’ve just invested in some riding skills and better safety gear vs focusing on a new bike. I only had it a month or so before the Indian.
      I also commute as well as ride for fun. So the miles add up quick. The scout was twice the price of the Rebel. The Rebel got 70+ mpg on regular gas. The Indian got 40+ but took premium. The Rebel was way better in traffic, lighter, more nimble. The Indians gear box weirdness. Clutch pull was so much easier on the Rebel. Just an easier bike to “do everything”on.
      The Indian was nice, don’t get me wrong. Nothing substitutes the smiles per mile it gives you. The engine was fast and the styling was on point. After a while it was very fatiguing to ride as a daily driver.
      If I was just riding distance or for fun & weekend rides I think the “feel and vibe” of a bike is more important. So the Indian wins there!
      But for everyday riding, you just need something reliable, utilitarian that will give no fuss… The Rebel was that bike for me.
      Sorry for the novel. Lol.

    Iv found Indian Customer service/relations to be $h!t. The moment something isn't quite right they dismiss it as you being ridiculous or having unrealistic expectations of what the bike should be able to do or feel like. I rode a 2020 Scout and a 2020 FTR at a demo ride, I noticed both of them ran extremely hot to the point it was uncomfortable to come to a stop in traffic. I mentioned it to the dealer and asked if that was normal on Indian bikes. He got kind of crappy with me and said "well your sitting on an engine" and walked away then returned a few moments later and said "you know that's normal with all motorcycles."....... All I could do was point across the parking lot at my 1980s technology air/oil cooled dr650 and say well mine doesn't get hot like that...... He proceeded to snap at me again, making a comment about how that's different because it's a Japanese bike. Because apparently being American made means we should completely disregard all flaws......... Few months later at a completely different Indian dealer an entire State away I had another run in with a particularly rude salesman who in the middle of answering my questions just walked away to go help another customer. When he finally came back his response blew my mind, he said sorry I have to attend to customers before window shoppers. I always liked the Indian brand and really wanted one but after such crap customer service I ended up leaving that day and bought another Suzuki a few miles down the road.

My problem is that I ended up paying really good money for an OK bike. Also, Polaris warranty department seems to enjoy denying claims until they are compelled to do anything. @bertsbike  Před 3 lety

      I think if I had bought it used for the price of some of the 2016-17 models I’ve been seeing I would’ve kept it in the stable. The best part about the bike is the engine and the styling IMO. Your right, you buy the bike and realize that you need a luggage rack and a new captain and passenger seat and passenger pegs to make it comfy and practical plus a new clutch cable to combat the incredibly stretchy stock one.
      The gear shifter is somewhat vague and notchy. Clutch pull is the hardest I’ve ever encountered on any bike. Paint scratches very easy.
      I had talked to the warranty department and they said “If we don’t find anything wrong your gonna pay them for the diagnostic”. I was hoping for more like “sure we’ll look at it for you since you bought our motorcycle to see if there’s anything wrong with the bike.”
      The dealer mechanic was really good about not charging you for B.S.
      With all that said; I still like the bike but I would probably look for a good used one around 6-7000.
