I love these kinds of videos. Its really comforting seeing the less than "perfect" parts of customizing, the older brushes, the second guesses, etc. As someone who is doing some more customizing but is absolutely terrible at painting, its helpful to see good work come out from an unpolished process.

Another trick I like to use, especially on figures with a lot of that factory gloss, is to take a fine grit sandpaper and just brush over the large, empty spaces. It scuffs things up, but only enough to give the wash something to "hold on to."

You do really make me want to give this a shot. Big Bad made a good call sponsoring you here, because you're making me mighty tempted by a figure I otherwise didn't have on my radar.

I was scared to try painting for years and years. Paint washes are fun, easy, and intuitive. Give it a try on some cheap toy with a lot of sculpted detail. It will reinvigorate your hobby.

Thank you for making this! I really want to be able to confidently customise the figures I get; not full on new characters and kit-bashing, but to just paint them up to make them better (adding missing paint or fixing mistakes, that sort of thing). Showing not only the physical process but also explaining your thoughts behind that was great! So many others just show you a before and after and then explain how they did it vaguely, so this was a really fascinating watch. Would love to see one of these for painting an entire figure, like when you did Molten Man!

I think it’s great that Hasbro released a figure that isn’t dirty, I feel like they release clean looking figures for the option of customizing your own way and also fans that like cleaner droids

Excellent job. The weathering looks great. The first weathering I ever did was of a one-time pristine R2D2 that needed to look like 'his' time on Dagobah. Looks really good, too. Thank you for your vids and the joy you present in this great hobby. All the best.

That looks like it rolled right off the screen! Great work, Robo!
When I weather things, it's mostly just me splotching on watered down black paint and/or brown shoe polish, wiping it off, adding more, wiping it off. It's a vicious cycle that I get caught in every time. It only ends when I realize it's been an hour and a half and I need to move on. Then I just throw on some matte clear coat and that's pretty much it.
Side note though: get a cheap blow-dryer. Using the heat gun just to dry some paint seems a bit overkill. Don't wanna accidentally warp or even melt your toys.

I'm far from an expert...but a quick tip is take an exacto and lightly scrape the powder in a Tamiya Weathering Master.
This breaks up some loose powder to use.
Also, if you apply a matte spray first, it gives some "bite" for the powder to grip to.

When you were using the foam brush and referring to 'sharpness', in my mind it was leaving marks akin to how gravity would treat oil running down the side.. fairly straight line, albeit spread.

I've done this type of thing for diorama pieces, but that has like zero tact to it. Thanks for explaining as you go, Robo. Those Tamiya Weathering Masters have me real tempted too! The texture would be great on some Gundams that I... uh... broke. That I broke. Now they can be diorama pieces!
