I love these kinds of videos. Its really comforting seeing the less than "perfect" parts of customizing, the older brushes, the second guesses, etc. As someone who is doing some more customizing but is absolutely terrible at painting, its helpful to see good work come out from an unpolished process.
The Joy of Customizing with Robo Ross.
Yes! "Let's have a few happy little droids to our canvas."
Honestly your videos where you just play with your toys are the best ones. I love seeing the process of someone making a mass produced product their own
truly the bob ross of the toy community. always fun to tune in and have him ramble
Robo, YOU KNOW... how to dirty things. I DIG IT!
Absolutely love these customizing videos. Hope we get many more of these!
"Keep on trying till I can."
Thanks Robo. Those words means so much to me now more than ever. Both in customizing and in life. Much love man! ❤
Agreed. That needs to be his new shirt🙂
What's amazing is how much better it looked even after the first brown wash application.
Fantastic weathering job Robo. Weathering is so much fun.
Another trick I like to use, especially on figures with a lot of that factory gloss, is to take a fine grit sandpaper and just brush over the large, empty spaces. It scuffs things up, but only enough to give the wash something to "hold on to."
You do really make me want to give this a shot. Big Bad made a good call sponsoring you here, because you're making me mighty tempted by a figure I otherwise didn't have on my radar.
I was scared to try painting for years and years. Paint washes are fun, easy, and intuitive. Give it a try on some cheap toy with a lot of sculpted detail. It will reinvigorate your hobby.
Turned out great Robo!!!
Love your work robo, really inspires me
Love that sweet, sweet customizing content
Thank you for making this! I really want to be able to confidently customise the figures I get; not full on new characters and kit-bashing, but to just paint them up to make them better (adding missing paint or fixing mistakes, that sort of thing). Showing not only the physical process but also explaining your thoughts behind that was great! So many others just show you a before and after and then explain how they did it vaguely, so this was a really fascinating watch. Would love to see one of these for painting an entire figure, like when you did Molten Man!
Awesome job! I love what a big difference a little paint can make
I think it’s great that Hasbro released a figure that isn’t dirty, I feel like they release clean looking figures for the option of customizing your own way and also fans that like cleaner droids
Excellent job. The weathering looks great. The first weathering I ever did was of a one-time pristine R2D2 that needed to look like 'his' time on Dagobah. Looks really good, too. Thank you for your vids and the joy you present in this great hobby. All the best.
More videos like this! Enjoying the tutorials for sure!!
Awesome job sir. Love these customizing videos
That looks like it rolled right off the screen! Great work, Robo!
When I weather things, it's mostly just me splotching on watered down black paint and/or brown shoe polish, wiping it off, adding more, wiping it off. It's a vicious cycle that I get caught in every time. It only ends when I realize it's been an hour and a half and I need to move on. Then I just throw on some matte clear coat and that's pretty much it.
Side note though: get a cheap blow-dryer. Using the heat gun just to dry some paint seems a bit overkill. Don't wanna accidentally warp or even melt your toys.
I have the Target exclusive set pre-ordered so I want to weather that R5 and the pit droids. It's really useful to watch you apply everything to get a feel for the techniques. Love videos like this!
So happy to see you doing another Star Wars custom video again so soon. R5 looks great! Thanks BBTS for making it happen, please keep sending him Star Wars figures to paint!
Thank you so much. This was an inspiration for me to try this with mine. Got to get the paints next payday
Liked the video even I was watching ad in the beginning. I love this style of content
This was a blast to watch. First time I tried to conduct a paint-wash, it was on a Transformers Titan. Reckless not to try it on a cheaper figure first, but it worked out okay.
Looks good. Now that the R2/R5 model kits have dried up, I need a ton of these new astromechs.
I would love to show you my 1/6 r4. You're killing it!!
I love your playday vids Robo! Great work I love it! The heavy dirt around the eyes really works for me dude it's sick!
Loved this, I'll have to try this on my R5 model kit!
I'm far from an expert...but a quick tip is take an exacto and lightly scrape the powder in a Tamiya Weathering Master.
This breaks up some loose powder to use.
Also, if you apply a matte spray first, it gives some "bite" for the powder to grip to.
Wow give me ideas! Thank you. I always like the underdog R5 over R2.
You had way too much fun with that. It looks good, maybe do a Tatooine version of R2 & 3PO next.
I'm enjoying these customazing videos a lot. Kinda like Art Attack but funnier 😆
This was perfect!
The blow dryer ' rock theme ' is unique to your pooptube channel. It's something I look forward to during the apocalyptic battles being fought on the streets of the world. 😂❤
R5 turned out great! Well done 👍
Looks good brotherman. I did this to an R2 & an R5. They look so much better that way
These videos are great. I’ve been wanting to see you do this for years! Keep ‘em coming.
eyes look amazing!!
When you were using the foam brush and referring to 'sharpness', in my mind it was leaving marks akin to how gravity would treat oil running down the side.. fairly straight line, albeit spread.
R5-DGoth , NICE!! Love the video. I did this with the modelkit, it brings the astro to life 😍
Looks great, I saw in another customizers video they used a pop it for paint. Because it's made of silicone it's easy for cleanup
Don't forget to add a little with the panels open (the panels you open to put the droid arms/tools)
Doing a step by step for the blacked out Boba Fett model kit would be a cool video too
I've done this type of thing for diorama pieces, but that has like zero tact to it. Thanks for explaining as you go, Robo. Those Tamiya Weathering Masters have me real tempted too! The texture would be great on some Gundams that I... uh... broke. That I broke. Now they can be diorama pieces!
Very cool. Not into star wars, but great techniques used here
See… Robo does know some action figure improvement. I have debating replacing my Bandai model with one of these
I wanna show you how to do oil washes, it makes doing work like this much easier!
Legendary! 🤘
Love that you used brown (the lighter brown from Vallejo is called oiled earth) for the main body instead of black, lot of people I've seen use black for everything and the contrast is way too big for my liking
Oils work really really well for this too!!!!!
I might have just found an excuse to pick up that droid pack from Target to weather the R5-D4 in that set since I already have the stand alone release.
Looks like a lot of carbon scoring. He must've seen a lot of action.
Someone needs to introduce Robo to Nuln Oil and Agrax Earthshade.
Robo... The bob ross of action figures.
now i want to make me a Dagobah R2-D2
ROBO and bbts? hell yeah!
playtime !!!!
Robo do know
Dont mind me
Custom Thursdays
Whenever I hit a figure with matte spray after doing washes like this, it strips the paint off and ruins it. Any advice for that?
But she gave him an oil bath before Mando took him and he was clean. JK great job!

"Robo Doin' It Dirty" is gonna get you demonetized, fellah.
Yes
Rambling with Robo! Perfect with my coffee, until you make me spit it out again...
They look great, but I do think it all too far..
Play daaaaaaaaaaaaaay!
This is hurting me… urgh…. As someone who likes to keep the collection new, this is against my religion… 😂😂😂😂
I think it looks great, Robo. I've got about a dozen different Bandai astromech model kits still in the box, and definitely gonna keep this video as something to look at when I'm working on 'em.
Gratuitous generic comment!
This is the kind of videos I was hoping you'd one day start making consistently!
The black krssantn (spellcheck) video was really good.
