I'm buying my first & it's a 2019 RLine. I've always owned Toyota's & Camry's, but I wanted something smaller since my youngest is now 10, but something a little sporter. I hope I will like this! A big change for me! But I know I'll love the gas mileage!

    I own a 2019 Jetta R Line...my fourth Jetta.
    A couple of comments:
    1. My previous Jetta was a 1.8 TSI model. For normal driving I do not notice much difference in performance.
    2. My average mileage is around 35mpg mixed city and highway. On longer journeys I get close to 45 mpg. The economy was a buying factor for me.
    3. I live in New England and opted for an R Line with the winter package which got me heated seats, heated steering wheel, heated rear seats, and heaters for the mirrors and windshield wipers.
    4. Price was great. With dealer discounts and other offers I purchased for around $20K plus tax. That was almost $4K saving.
    5. Large sunroof is really nice.
    6. Remote engine starter also included as standard. That was not mentioned in this review.
    I like the car.

I forgot to mention that there are so many nice cars and other vehicles out there, Viva la difference and selection, but when it comes down to business, what is going to be right for you. Styling, ergonomics, creature comforts, performance, safety, longevity, and reliability. And most importantly, cost to acquire, maintain, insure, license, and availability of parts, and service)repair sources that are reasonably convenient for you. I notice so many people are great car reviewers, but few mention the potential problems, breakdowns, like known transmission or vehicle specific issues to consider when making a purchase.

I remember driving a co-worker's early 2000s Mk4 vr6 powered Jetta. That was a very nice vehicle at the time and could pull. I haven't driven this new Jetta, but the sub 150hp rating seems awfully low unless Audi is positioning the Jetta as the gateway into the A3 or A4. This would work for a first car or for a new driver, I suppose.

Nice Jetta. I agree with almost everything you stated, though, I have no problem with the grill styling. I like the looks of the Honda Civic Sport Hatchback, even those big plastic rear panels that looks like it was supposed to have rear sensors on the Type R, like the Euro versions which have sensors in the front grill. Maybe after market could make replacement pieces, even for spy special agent types to dispense 007 type oil slicks, tear gas, machine guns, etc.... On the Civic Sport Sedan, they made the lower front and rear fascia more toned down like this Jetta, or like the Subaru Impreza Sport models. The wheels look more silver to me than gun metal, which would be my preference in trim here, without going too black. On sport models with the darker trim, factory smoke tint in the taillights would be a nice added touch. Even some of the older Buick sport models had that. It looks way better than dull, uneven spray on tint, and OEM legal and more long lasting. I do like the deep trunk, though you got a point about the leftover height for heavier objects, but I bet it's not an issue for your cameraman. My sister had a 1988 VW Jetta GL. It was roomy for the small size, but had a huge trunk due to the boxy shape that year. Plus, with the deep trunk, things not likely to fall out ss much when the trunk is opened. The shortcuts in quality materials, especially in the interior is often an issue, probably price point being the most common factor. And yes, that rod for the hood like shaky and flimsy. Other than that, the main negative issue is the engine output, and dependability and reliability. Other than the engine and related gear failing to run smoothly, or things like structural rigidity and integrity, as in getting damaged easily or falling apart, water leaks, etc., one of the most common issue other than specific engine issues is the transmissions, especially CVTs. Is the Jetta a better alternative to the Honda Civic? That is highly subjective to preference, and price for styling, performance and features for the specific trims, and options. As for me, I would go with the Honda Civic Sport Sedan, hands down. I don't think the Jetta can match it at that price point and features and such.

I wonder if simply going with the 1.8 would've been just as good with the fuel economy? Previous VW Jetta SEL's had the 1.8 as standard equipment. I had a Passat with the 1.8 and it would do extremely well on fuel and weighed more than the current Jetta and the quality of power was very good considering. It has been said VW went with the 1.4 to save weight since it has a cast aluminum block vs. the 1.8's cast iron block, but that weight savings can't be that significant. I don't know about rear spoilers or wings. It's been my experience that they trap/collect dirt and grit around the perimeter and sometimes that can translate into surface scratches if you are not careful with washing. They don't have any real performance benefit on this type of car. On the Jetta, only the SEL Premium gets the leather seating surfaces. The other trims except the S have leatherette. I don't know about the shifter boot, but I would assume leatherette due to economy and it not being a manual. I want to drive one to get a driving impression. The Civic is held back somewhat due to the CVT (maybe not in ultimate acceleration, but the feel is different) vs. the Jetta's 8-speed. However, it will get better mpg's. Something few comment on are the huge trunk hinges. It would be so nice to see them use the fold flat hinges. Better design and not that complicated at all to manufacture. I feel the consumer is getting short changed here. But, VW does use a seam weld for the side body panel and forged hinges vs. the Civics stamped hinges and spotted welded side panel to roof panel leaving the black plastic gutter strip to hide it. Interestingly, VW only charges extra for the Habanero Orange, which is the most unique color. Honda doesn't charge extra for any Civic color.

If you are thinking to buy a new VW JETTA 2019, think twice.
I bought this car in May 2019. The 8 speed automatic transmission, beside making a grinding noise when is driving at a constant speed of 30 to 40 miles per hour (+/_ 1,200 RPM), make an annoying vibration. The service department and the VW representative said that the vibration and noise are normal. I think this is the most ridiculos answer that I ever heard from a car manufacturer.
I when to different VW dealers and drove a brand new car and all have the same problem. Be careful when you test it, maybe you will not notice it at the beginning.
Just type in Google "Jetta 2019 transmission problems" and you will see.
Pd: This happens on roads not very steep as we have in florida.

I recently traded my 2013 CC R-line in for one of these and boy was that I mistake. My CC had been giving me some issues so swapping it out for something New seemed like an awesome idea. I didn't have much to put down at the moment and I still had a little bit left on the back end of the CC. What that being the case I was told that the 2019 Jetta R-line was the only thing that would work for the deal. So I foolishly took the deal but tried to return the car after a few days of getting a good feel for it. Basically the car is really light weight and Small, and doesn't have a solid feel which my CC offered and a few other small car manufacturers offer. It's unbelievably slow and the 1.4T Engine that it has is a major downgrade coming from the 2.0T. The 17inch Rims and tires don't help either, the wind feels like it's gonna blow the car away on the Highway and the standard audio system is a joke. Moral of the story I'm Now stuck with well equipped collage kids car for the next 2 or 3 years.😡😡😡
It's not the worse However, if your looking for premium features and a more solid ride this isn't it.

@@linchester8464 we don't get the dsg in the US. We have an 8speed auto. If you want more power just tune it. You'd make more power and have better acceleration than a 1.8t or a 2.0t

ok, 147 hp yes but its turbocharged and with the 184 ft lbs of torque that really matters and it begins low in the rev range . 30 -40 mpg , excellent warranty , 8 spd auto ( not a CVT), alloy wheels std , very aerodynamic ( .27 cd). Several aspects you mention are wrong ( Mpg, not naturally aspirated its a turbo , etc)
