  • This video lecture discusses the meaning of humanism.
Humanism is a philosophical stance which affirms the fact that humans have dignity and worth and that they are capable of discovering truths about the world and humanity’s place within it purely by appealing to reason and scientific method. In humanism, there is also the emphasis on faith in humanity and a concern for building a more humane and just society.

I just wanna make this point that being non-religious is not synonymous with being a naturalist, because it just means that you don't belong to any particular religion. However, a non-religious person can still subscribe to new-age spirituality, and also believe in mystical things.

@@ken4975 I’m a bit late here, but I don’t think humanism is quite like religion or a belief system, since every humanist has their own goals, own personal rules and own moral code. No humanist is quite the same, and so in my opinion, trying to label people like humanists isn’t quite right. And most humanists as far as I’m aware don’t believe in religion, but understand that it gives comfort to people to believe in something bigger than themselves, and so respect other peoples beliefs.
If you ask me, if everyone in the world believed in humanist ideals like wanting to improve the lives of everyone around them, and living life for the sake of living, then the world would be way more peaceful.

I’m amazed at how people keep saying that humanism isn’t a religion. They say it’s a “philosophical” position that uplifts humans above all else.
Not only is that the epitome of religion, it’s the epitome of self worship.
Humanism is the religion of self worship. That is why so many people are drawn to that show The Chosen. They keep saying “Oh I love that show because it highlights Jesus’s human aspects”. What they “see” is a human who is God, not a God who was human.
