- I tried the test myself to see if the Lymans Great Plains Rifle is actually a tack driver.

Thank you for making the video Mark! You had a nice group just below that second tack from the left. When I added the Lyman peep sights to my GPR, my groups got a lot smaller. They help my old eyes. Have a great day.
My eyes needs a lot more too. I can barely see those little tacks...LOL
Hey Mark, Just increase the size of the tack and you will be home free. Just another great day burning powder!!
Yes..I thought about putting those wide roofing nails on the board...LOL Probably should have.
Mark Throw 2 ball down the barrel and double your chance's!! Great video!
Thought about that...LOL That would be fun to try!
Nice job! Great energy, enjoyed that!
Thanks for watching....
LOL! Tacks seem pretty safe. Great vid Mark! Hi to the unknown cyclists!
Tacks are VERY safe around me.......LOL
👍 good stuff, sir. Now do a video on how to work up an accurate load for the GPR. I started at 60 gr and increased the charge by 5 gr until I got to 85 gr. Then the group tightened up considerably. I enjoy watching you shoot the flintlocks!
I've been asked to do that before. I'm not sure I can consistently hit a target to get a good group...LOL
Great video brother!! Your excitement is awesome!!!
I absolutely LOVE this sport, even if I can't hit the targets! Thanks for watching....
@@blackpowdermaniacshooter You still get an A for effort!!! No problem! I look forward to your content and I hope you enjoy mine as well!!
The Kentucky windage at that close must have been something. I wonder if a .490 ball would have made a difference? Thanks for another great video Mark!
I don't know. I need to pour some .490's & try it again. Good idea to try.
Thanks Mark! 🐎
Thanks for watching....
Love it!
Thanks for watching....
There's a book I read about Jack hinsons one man war. He was killing union officers at 600 hundred yards with his rifle from above that river you're video made me think of that story because he was a tack driver! I liked the video keep up the good work!
Jack Hinson was an awesome shooter for sure!
Nice video mark. Getting ready I see for the shoot out?
Yes...I have 18 metal targets ( including BigFoot ) already cut out ready to hang Sunday morning. I'm planning on putting them in the same place as last year. Some shooters wanted tougher targets to shoot. I'm going give them some this year. I'm looking forward to it!
My go to hunting gun is a .54 cal. Deerstalker. I call it my deer hammer. I run 115 gr. of 2F Triple 7 and 348 gr. solid lead hollow point CVA Powerbelt bullets. It has a 1:48 twist so it does bullets really well. Of course it's a flintlock because l live in PA. With that combo it takes down deer very quick. The groups at 50 yards is touching. I only sight in at 50 because that's a long shot on our land. It's a cool area with mountain Laurel, grape vines and multi flowral roses. Really most shots are around 30 yards.
That's awesome.....I gave away a new Deerstalker in a contest last year. Those are awesome guns! I bet you can't wait for the PA flintlock season to get started.
@@blackpowdermaniacshooter We are chomping at the bit. Most people look forward to Christmas day. I look forward to the day after Christmas when we make the smoke fly. 👍
This gun is a tack driver LoL. Love it Mark. Cheer up Mark if it was a deer you got it every time 😂. I ordered a GPH signature series in a 1:24 twist barrel 30" in flintlock. I hope I can make it a tack driver. I like old ideas with a new twist lol.
Thanks my friend.....I LOVE trying new things with these o' BP guns. More coming soon.
Awesome video! I think if you was to move those tacks a tad bit lower you would have hit them all no problem 🤔 GPR is on my list for next year. As always, really enjoy the videos 😁
Thanks for watching....
You got to love when people put a gun up for sale about a particular rifle and then the last sentence it says PS or by the way this gun is tack driver so why are they selling it if it's a tack driver🤔🤔🤔 keep up the good work MARK
Hmmm, that's a GREAT question!!
A tack driver is only as good as the eyesight of the shooter...lol.
Great video Mark.
Yep.........the gun is a tack driver, this shooter isn't....LOL
Mark me and the wife is sitting here drinking coffee laughing with you! very good video,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Glad you folks enjoyed this one. I have more similar ones coming soon. Thanks for watching....
I forgot to comment that my wet screened 1/16 mesh 70%alcohol, air dry, 75/15/10 home made at 80 grains is about like store bought 3f power, So your normal loads are similar. The birdshot is backyard, barnyard effective. The .490 rb with .10 patch is best, but tight as I need to scrub with ballistol /water every few shots. At 70% density I load an average weight into nitrate tubes. At the coast it helps to shoot in the drizzles!
WOW.....now...that's pretty cool..!!
You need to use your 60 cal smoothie ! Bigger hole 🤣 gotta love it !
Yes, tried that recently...lots of fun: czcams.com/video/yyRkUYtg2v0/video.html
Mark, you should try bigger tacks! ha ha ha ah. Fun video and, that is a tac driver.
I NEED bigger tacks!! LOL
So I may have to part with a lot of powder when I move back to Alaska next year. Can't take it on the plane and can't ship it up there without paying thousands of dollars that I don't have. Was wondering if you would be interested???
Depends on price, what you have & where you live. I'm sure you won't have any problem unloading powder, especially these days.
Great video Mark, notice how your grouping is….that’s the true measure of the accuracy, simply adjust your aim point and voila!!! TACK DRIVING ACCURACY
Easier said than done with my shooting....LOL
I’ve heard that Lyman makes a good rifle. It’s nice to see considering TC has vacated theirs
Mark is having fun, and I love his videos, but he shoots a loose charge. The GPG will cloverleaf at fifty yards. Very good gun.
However if you won’t have more fun then Mark
It shoots VERY well. It probably would do better using the .490 RB's. I may pour some those soon & try them.
@@blackpowdermaniacshooter the point is you were having fun, and could entertain us well👍for another good vid
@@jeffreyrobinson3555 Thanks my friend.....and....for watching....
@@jeffreyrobinson3555 It is possible with some GPR's. Most will not cloverleaf at 50. Like all rifle barrels, there are better ones and there are the rest - all in a single batch. With these soft iron barrels, the broach will cut a couple stinkers at first, then settle down and make some very good lands for a few barrels before the broach begins to load up and dull out. Those barrels are still decent, but will never cloverleaf. When you buy a large-run production rifle, you play the lotto.
Investarms is the maker/importer in Italy. They have made a lot of decent guns for the money, but they are not Miroku in Japan, which made my Dixie Tennessee Mountain Rifle. I have a GPR in .50 that I bought in 1980, and the TMR I bought in 1979, also in .50. Both are pretty good, but the TMR is better in all respects. Best lock I have EVER used, no matter the price or custom maker.
MI e is. Same hole at 50 yards. I've got the Kyman/Pedersoli model. 60 gems of real 3f with a cushion felt wad under .010 patched .490 ball. I think it has to do with the Pedersoli sights. I can see them perfectly and cancelled my order for a peep.
Outstanding shooting my friend. I'd forget about the peep sights too! Thanks for watching.
My Deerstalker is now. It took lots of experimenting. 348 gr solid lead hollow point power belt. 115 gr of 2f Triple 7 and 4f in the pan. Get the bigger touch hole that takes a Allen wrench. Really good groups and will pound a deer really good. Not a lot of tracking. 54 cal. is a bad mean gun.
I've shot a 54 a few times. I agree its a beast of gun!
Hey out of curiosity what if a ball got stuck in the barrel or u loaded it without power could u just take the gun apart and run a rod down it to get it clear?
It is not that easy. The breech would have to be removed and that's a no-no. Here is one way to get the ball out if its a percussion: czcams.com/video/vGy87a4c9NY/video.html
This one will help you it is flintlock: czcams.com/video/8UgxLVoGGZ0/video.html
Thx
If you shoot enough wood from around the tack... it'll just fall out. That how I do it... works good! Fun shooting is better than most days.
I almost did that...LOL Thanks for watching....
Holy cow you must have some good eyes
I wonder if there is a scope available for these ?
I could sure use a scope...LOL Thanks for watching....
@@blackpowdermaniacshooter do anyone make a scope for these riflles ?
@@GeorgiaRidgerunner Not that I know of....putting a scope on a flintlock gun is almost sacreligious to traditional shooters. They think scopes should stay on inlines....
@@blackpowdermaniacshooter i know its considered sacrilege but scopes did exist they were even used some in the civil war
@@GeorgiaRidgerunner Yes I know. I'm amazed those fellows could hit anything using them.
Is your GPR the Investarms with the slow twist rate? Mine is. It would be interesting to try this experiment on the bench thus eliminating some human error. Error is something I'm good at lol
Yes..it is a Investarms model. Probably one of the least ones available when I got last Christmas. I LOVE this model.
@@blackpowdermaniacshooter we have the same gun then.
@@briansherrillruralliving9708 I Love shooting this one. Its a VERY reliable rifle.
I wish I lived in Eastern Kentucky instead of rathole New Jersey. What kind of rifling does it have?
I read years ago that new barrels often have machining burrs in the bore which need to be lapped out or fired out for maximum accuracy. But that looks real good.
It's a 1:48 twist. The .54 caliber has a 1:65 twist.
@@michael.w.salter Thsnk you. My Thompson Center .50 flintlock has a 1 in 48 twist also. My .54 and .58 custom have 1 in 66 or 72. Can't recall.
The GPR I have has a 1 X 66 twist. Its built for the round balls. I love shooting it! Thanks for watching....
@@blackpowdermaniacshooter
You lucky dawg Mark, you must have gotten one of the older ones. The new ones have a faster twist.
@@michael.w.salter I wanted one of those Investarms models with the 1 X 66 twist. Otherwise...I would have picked something different.
My 50 begs for a good full charge before it settles down to blow fly on tack!
I usually shoot 50-60 grains...but, at this close distance, I wanted to give myself a little edge.. It finally worked...LOL
It was a good video but I believe that's the first time I've ever seen anybody shoot all the way around attack just about and it still be there LOL just kidding good shooting or at least fun. Have a great day stay safe keep your powder dry!
Thanks for watching....that's my luck in shooting. LOL
Well now I need to try that have you ever shot a candle out at 100 yard at night that's one I've heard of but ain't done it yet
Shoot out a candle out at 100 yards?? WOW..I can barely see one that far away. Shooting one is on my bucket list for a video project, but, it certainly won't be 100 yards away. More like 10-15 yards for me....LOL
@@blackpowdermaniacshooter oh I know be a hard shot at a 100 yards but I got to try it as well as what you did I've got 20 muzzleloading guns so I wouldn't get bored I'd be out of powder and caps lol
@@clarenceriffle320 20 BP guns?? That would be very neat figuring out which gun to go shoot today. I have 6 of them...most are 50 calibers. That keeps life easy trying to keep with pouring round balls to shoot. Keep shooting my friend.
Id like to find a lock and barrel for mine so I could have the option of shooting flint or percussion
Dixie or Track probably has one. Are you ready to get together & shoot some? I'm available some this week.
@@blackpowdermaniacshooter any time old friend. I'm ready!
@@blackpowdermaniacshooter well probably have to go to clear creek range. My neighbor is building houses all around me and I'm kinda afraid to go down in the field and shoot now
@@357bullfrog9 Is the range available thru the week?
@@blackpowdermaniacshooter yep. It's open every day
Ok now I want to see if the Pedersoli Indian trade rifle is a tack driver with #6 shot. Ill even let you put up more tacks.
That's coming soon! Thanks for watching....
Mark make a target, high visibility 3 inch bullseye, lines to help center/see. Do some 100 to 150 yes. Show us how to get it right! I'm still trying. Is 60 grain 3f to light for 150 yes Mark??
You must be kidding...I can barely see a target at 150 yards unless its huge! LOL
Mark in theory, a 8 inch saw blade should work for a muzzleloader gong correct???
@@roberttolley5055 For a short while a saw blade will...I've beaten them up pretty good within 50 yards.
These rifles are not "tack drivers" but they do have pretty good hunting accuracy, and can be very accurate if you work up your loads and practice. One thing that really helps isa finer front blade. That big blocky front sight gives you plenty of steel to thin down. For those with eye glasses for distance, you might have a hard time focusing on the rear sight. Just cut a piece of black electrical tape, punch a clean sharp 1/16 hole in it, and stick it on your right lens, up in the far left top corner. That's where you see from behind your glasses. It's a poor man's peep, and it works like magic because it is located at your prescription focal distance as corrected. You'll never go to the range without it again. No add-on peep sight for my traditional rifles - ever.
Thanks for that "poor man's" tip. I may try that soon.
How in world you see that
That's why it was up close, so I could see it! LOL
paid $250 nzd for an 8mm mauser took it out to sight it in put a tack on the board for a bullseye went back 100m hit the tack first shot then proceeded to shoot a group the size of a dinner plate. Gun couldn't shoot groups to save itself but never missed an animal
That's some awesome shooting!
The rifle is a tac driver even if you ain't 👍👍🇺🇸
Yep....t sure is, the shooter isn't....LOL
@@blackpowdermaniacshooter if you use a bench and an old jacket for a pillow , try sighting it in at fifteen yards . Then try the tacs again 👍👍🇺🇸
@@jimmybritt9537 Good idea. This o' blind shooter can all the help he can find...LOL

??
Generic term for accuracy. With careful experimentation a high degree of accuracy is possible. Better to bench shoot that smokepole for extreme accuracy.
I agree, but, shooting off hand is much more fun! Thanks for watching....
I think that gun IS a tack driver , HOWEVER I don't think YOU are a tack driver ( at least not twice in a row ) LOL
Amen brother...the guns shoots MUCH better than I ever will....! ! Thanks for watching...
