      They actually turn right sometimes.:.they even have some street circuits.
      But yeah it’s a funny title hehe
      Give NASCAR a chance tho..it’s high speed chess. It’s not about the tech, the cars are basic American muscle cars. It’s about the alliances that are built, alliances that are broken, strategy, scheming, faking, even intentionally crashing. It’s far more complicated a sport than it seems. It’s barely controlled war.

      As far as I know, the production house behind "Drive to Survive" is British?

    • @allclay1993
      @allclay1993 Před 2 lety +30

      In case you're curious, they turn left because there's 200 lbs (90.72 kg) more weight on the left side of the vehicle, making left turns more stable. They can go faster turning left than turning right, and more speed is more fun to watch, I guess. The reason for the 200 lbs on the left of the car is that's where the driver sits in American vehicles (most NASCAR folks take immense pride in being American, in my experience). Drivers apparently have to weigh 200 lbs or less, and then they add weights to make all the drivers effectively 200 lbs. I've also heard it came from the tradition of horse racing, where the track runs counter-clockwise; because British tracks ran clockwise and we couldn't possibly do things the way you do over there haha

    the big thing with DTS is that it dipped your toes in a massive pool of F1. It did a good job of explaining the sport, the tracks, how the cars work. But it also introduce the drivers, and not just the top 3 or 4 drivers. If you watch a race, you usually don't ever see people like Nico get interviewed when he places like 10th or 15th in a race. So if you just stepped into F1 with no previous knowledge. It takes a season or two, plus a good amount of personal research to really understand it and the drivers. Where DTS kind of condensed all it down into something more digestible for new fans. I honestly wish every sport did this.
    I don't like a lot of sports because if you haven't been following forever, you just don't know. Its the same with baseball, or football, or soccer or any sport. You need to spend you time, watching a sport you don't understand and then taking time to learn how this works and why something happened.

      So very true! As a young woman in a male-dominated occupation, I was trying to learn football to be able to follow a lot of the conversations going on at work. Unknowingly, my first introduction was to Canadian Football. I was walking by the TV room one day and something caught my eye with the football game being watched without sound. Ever trying to learn, I asked a question about what I just saw. "Oh, that's American Football, it's different" was the answer.
      What? I give up. Don't even attempt to get me interested in hockey. I'll watch bits and pieces of the Olympics but now? ... Now I'm scouring CZcams every Monday looking for F1 videos. I might even spend some money so I can watch it live!

      DTS also created LOT of fake drama. That's why I only watched half of the 1st season. And I follow F1 for almost 20 years now. But hey, I don't judge, who likes it watches it, vice versa.

    • @fenris4045
      @fenris4045 Před 2 lety +2

      @@0okyo True, but I think that DTS did that, to make the season more exciting. I'm new to being an f1 fan, and the most exciting thing about f1 was last year's rivalry between Verstappen and Hamilton. I don't think that the previous seasons had something as exciting as that.
      Also, the rivalry of the 2021 season is easily noticeable, and was the highlight of the year. It was so popular, that even someone like me who only knew that Hamilton was a 7-time world champ, felt the thrill. I'm not saying that the previous years didn't have similar exciting events, but to understand those, you need to be a "true" f1 fan, who has been watching f1 since the 90's, to know and understand what's happening. But DTS was for those fans, AND for new viewers.
      So maybe because of that, they created something fake to keep the viewer count constant.
      This is my assumption btw.

      That's because women are very social/emotional and shows like Netflix fleshes out the characters, the story, real emotions....the humans and it grows on them. In a race, you don't get much story at all about the actual drivers as people. Normally, you would have to research and follow stories outside the race....but that only works when the interest in the sport is already there.

    • @rumblefish9
      @rumblefish9 Před 2 lety +1

      I'm female and it was my ex-boyfriend who introduced me to F1, He didn't even force me, he just said to watch 1 race and maybe I would like it. I think my first race was the 2003 Hungarian GP and in that race, I witnessed a very young driver who I thought was kinda cute but also very ballsy go and win the thing and in the process lap Schumacher. The next year I met that driver in a meet and greet on route to Japan. By then I was hooked. I voraciously soaked up anything I could get my hands on. I familiarized myself with not just the teams but with a lot more. I collected F1 Racing Magazines (now GP Racing) more than I did Cosmo. I looked into the strategies (back then refueling was still allowed so I was very much interested in strategy regarding how much they'd fuel and how many stops), car specs, etc. Few women even go that far into the fandom. Still a Fernando Alonso fan after all these years. Btw, the documentary about his last race for Ferrari is a must-watch.
      DTS is a good way to get someone into the sport but to really experience F1, is to watch the races, and interviews read about the inside stories, etc. And you decide on what to feel about a certain thing without the show leading you to it. Let's face it, DTS is biased.

  • @JakeBisognin

    I started watching F1 after seeing DTS. I was always intrigued about F1, but not knowing any of the drivers or teams makes it hard to enter the world and become a fan. We all know that the producers create drama and their own story lines, but it was still informative to see who all the characters are.

      I've always loved cars and racing, and I had surface level knowledge of F1, but I never followed an auto racing championship. Except in high school when I tried for 3 weeks to follow Nascar. I lost all interest in watching auto racing from that point on until a co-worker recommended Drive to Survive to me. I had expressed interest in rallying during a conversation one day and he nudged me constantly to check DTS out over the course of a work week. To my pleasant surprise, I binged the whole series one weekend and was actually looking forward to the next season when he asked why not just watch the races live. Thus, I discovered F1TV and I've been following the sport like a crazy person since 2020. I honestly think F1 saved me from going insane during the lockdowns lol

    As simplistic as it sounds, learning that there are tire performance levels they have to pick from, and that they have a fuel limit, was enough for me to be interested in F1. It wasn’t the series exactly that convinced me, it could have been any one to tell me about those two very basic rules of F1. It just happened to be the first episode of DTS that told me. Those two rules made F1 seem more real, because it resembled racing video games and having a selection of parts to customize your car. And video games are something I play, so by extension, it meant F1 was something I should watch.

      I haven't ever watched DTS but one sensationalized "rivalry" I always hear they've tried really hard to milk is Lando and Carlos Sainz. This is my first full year watching F1 (before that, the only races I ever saw were Spa and Monza in 2020) and even I know they have just about the closest bromance you can imagine

Daniel and Max had (and still do) one of the closest friendships on the grid.

The drama is a bit excessive, and IMO this joke of season FIA wise is a result of Netflix and Masi desire to make it more “entertaining”. At the end of the day, I wouldn’t say it saved it from itself. It’s just technical, and if you don’t LOVE racing, it just wouldn’t be your thing and it would have survived with just being that.

    I'm here because of DTS - I'm on the second season trying to get it all in before March and I'm hooked... I used to work in sports media and I didn't know the ins and outs of the sport so it didn't mean anything to me when Lewis got his 200th pole or whatever. But now that I know the story of the teams and drivers it's interesting!

    Growing up, I only knew about F1 from the car magazines coverage of Micheal Schumaker, I never saw races, I had never even heard of Ayrton Senna or Niki Lauda. DTS was my first real opportunity to connect with the modern grid, the teams, drivers and circuits. It gave a face to the name and greatly increased my hunger for all things F1. So hats off to all involved, and congrats to Nolan on 200!!

    Yep, putting Ellie Norman in charge of the whole marketing was a genius move. You see F1’s new logo? That’s her doing. Trying to get Americans more involved in the sport with Netflix? Yep, her too. She paved the way to give more access to the drivers using today’s electronic tools. Fan base hasn’t been this high due to all the electronic means.
    F1 has always been internationally known. Only now more Americans are aware since they’re presented more like a “reality tv” spotlight.
    I’ve always been a fan since I first got here to Canada. Back when you actually have to get up super early to catch race since there were no pvrs. We barely had cable to capture the tv feed. 😝

    I hated drive to survive because of all the toxicity it brought to an already toxic fan base. Now I love it, Im glad all those people came to enjoy this wonderful sport and Im glad F1 got the publicity in the US that is deserved. Plus it gave us a behind the scenes I had never seen in 11 years of watching it.

      The toxicity is becoming unbearable. The joys of a good post race debate is almost impossible to have these days.

      @@rhyswilliams4893 That is true, but remember the Vettel days. People hated the guy and would criticize every single thing he said. I think this toxicity will calm down a bit within 2 seasons once people start settling down

      @@brayan_m I hope so. Getting called stupid/clueless/salty by someone who's entire f1 knowledge comes from DTS is just laughable ATM

      @@brayan_m People hated Vettel for a reason because he acted like an insufferable teen who whined when things didn't go his way. One specific one was Vettel insisting on getting the new front wing which should have been Webbers because it was Mark's turn. Vettel complained until RB relented. There was another incident when he brake tested Alonso at the Italian GP and got a penalty. When he was ok with team orders as long at it benefitted him but refused to do the same when asked to let Webber pass. Or did you forget Multi 21? Multi 12 was called on Webber plenty times but Vettel refused when it was his turn. There was a reason Vettel was criticized and much of those were valid.

    Not just getting new people into F1, but also bringing back old spectators and their friends, too!
    I didn't watch DTS, but one of my best friends did. I also used to be a F1 spectator until around 2012. Because I now had a friend who likes F1, I also have someone to talk about it with, which brought me back into the sport!

    Congratulations on 200 man! This episode speaks truth. Drive to survive is the only reason I got into F1 after a long break from watching Nascar. Would be interesting to see if Nascar follows.
