Can a Formula 1 driver really be the greatest athlete of all time? YES, and his name is Lewis Hamilton! But there’s more to that GOAT status than his astonishing SEVEN Championship wins. He’s a working class person of color in a sport long-dominated by rich white dudes, the first black F1 champ in history, and a just plain nice guy. Lewis Hamilton almost single-handedly saved Formula 1 from death by boredom. But how did he get to the top from such humble beginnings? Who helped him become the inspiration he is today? And did you know F1 drivers lose 9 POUNDS OF SWEAT during a race? Find out all this and more with host James Pumphrey as he gets you Up To Speed on The Greatest Athlete Of All Time, Lewis Hamilton!

I'm glad Verstappen has challenged Hamilton to raise his game to stratospheric heights but I'd actually like to see them both race each other than the recklessness and dangerous angry manoeuvres witnessed from Verstappen on numerous occasions. After almost 7 seasons in F1 I expected Verstappen to have matured, developed his race craft and increased his intellectual capacity but alas that is not the case! Without a significant pace advantage from his car Verstappen just isn't a patch on Sir Lewis!

Fun story, I met Lewis Hamliton in the paddocks of the MTL Grand prix back in 2008. He asked if I wanted a picture with him, I told him thanks but I have no camera on me. Lewis told me if I should find a camera, to come find him. A friend of a friend let me borrow their camera. Hours later Lewis Hamilton and I bumped back into each other completely at random in the paddock area and he remembered me. Even though he was busy with some McLaren staff and other folks, and before I could even ask for a picture with him, he stopped what he was doing and asked me if I was ready for a photo now. I'll never forget that. Such a humble, approachable man. I still have that photo with him!

What impresses me most about Hamilton is that he's basically self-taught. His dad vigorously supported his career early on, but even he readily admits he had no concept of how to actually race and just threw out random ideas that might work. All the complexities of driving came to Lewis innately, as if he were born to race.

Lewis is sadly in a "You either die a hero or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain" situation. I feel like a lot of people are hating him because he won so many years in a row but forget how hard it was for him to get where he is. Yes he has a great car, but no one remembers that when he first went to Mercedes, it was seen as a poor decision because he was leaving McLaren to what many thought was an inferior team. even if you took his car away I feel like he would still be a top contender. But that's just me.

Very true. His history is mainly what I find so cool about him. Now, he’s a very good driver, probably one of the best, and he made an incredibly smart, and lucky, decision to go to Mercedes. For a while there, I think it was totally a case of him winning because he had the better car, and was simply better than his teammate. These days, the gap to other teams is a lot closer, but I’m still hoping for Verstappen to win the championship this year, mainly just to break the monotony lol. But you’re totally right that he’s just been winning for so long that he’s sort of become a villain. I’ve grown to actually like the guy in the last year or two, but I’m still rooting for his rival.

Yeah but there's one difference between the two, and that's their competition and motivation. James actually got a chance to go AGAINST the GOAT, Ricky Carmichael, and BEAT him. Yes Ricky won too, but James got the literal best ever thrown at him and he was able to WIN. That kept him motivated to keep going and keep trying to beat him......until he retired. Once Ricky retired, James was never the same again. I NEVER saw that fire in him again. He treated MX and SX like a job more than a joy. Ricky himself talks about this.
Whether you believe Senna is the GOAT (my pick, and Lewis') or you think Schumacher is (sort of like the Brady of F1, was able to amass wins forever until he got everything), Lewis never got to face any of those people. He is chasing a dream, a passion. Because of that, it never dies. Lewis is just as strong about this now as he was in 07 when he first got podium, if not more so. I believe he will break Schumacher's championship records and ACTUALLY cement himself as the GOAT

It's easy to say he's the best because of the car he's in, but he wasn't always in the best car or had the best gear and he still dominated like he does now. I'd love to see Max win WDC this year, but god damn if Lewis gets it he deserves it. The dedication and perfection of his craft is beyond most people's comprehensions. He is truly someone who has dedicated their life to what they do, and it shows. Max has youth on his side and I'm sure he'll be a multiple world champ soon, but Lewis is a force of nature.

I think Max showed in Brazil that he still have quite a lot to learn. He didn't manage to keep his cool into t1 and compromised his racing line so many times although Lewis was far behind. This is what gave Lewis the shot at the next straight.
