But when the band listened to the live at Astoria version, he stated that it “met with everyone’s approval”. So he edited out the audience, cleaned it up a bit, and re-recorded Thoms vocals. The Bends IS Radiohead. Us fans from the beginning, who had no idea what their "costumes" looked like like the majority of people posting here, passed around tapes of the Bends like it was forbidden. No local stores even know who they were. I'm still not sure where my friend got the Bends from. I assume he drove an hour to the big city by himself at 16 in his dead mom's minivan and bought it for $7. We had no idea what "cool" haircut Thom had. We didn't know who Thom Yorke was; never heard his name. Didn't hear his name afterwards; didn't care. We didn't care about haircuts and t-shirts and whatever else. They weren't on the radio and no one had the internet. We just knew the music. Most everyone else was listening to Tupac or the Spice Girls with the bass so loud their cars were raddling (while blacks laughed at them). I guess I'm "old". But I sometimes think about my mom's experience seeing the Beatles in concert just before they were etched in history. Back then, in my time, no one even thought about what someone looked like or the type of "cool" lights they had at their concert. For all we knew, Thom "what's his name" what a 7 foot black body builder. We only had their music and that was all that mattered. Now, even in these comments, everyone is talking about bangs and tennis shoes and how tall the singer is....

Can't quite put my finger on it, but this concerts feels like a proper "gig", full of unfiltered passion and energy, where as later shows (while still very good) feel a little more like going through the motions. OMG and then The Bends after creep. the crowd must've been like wtf is going on???
Sorry I'm just going to keep editing/adding to this comment as I continue watching, because this concert is blowing my mind away.
You can see people clearly losing their shit by the time My Iron Lung comes around. There's jumping around happening in the crowd shots that could accurately be described as 'ecstatic frenzy' i.e. everyone is going mental, and rightfully so.
Maquiladora is towering. Just a hot slab of 3-guitar perfection. The transformation of Pablo Honey-era sounds to this is jaw dropping. Quality of live performance is unreal.
I forget how early-Ed was such a cheeky rock god. He seems hell bent on literally melting peoples' faces off.
Jesus! Thom seems genuinely insecure about the new material. It's really interesting to see that. He finished Fake Plastic Trees, one of the greatest songs ever written, and says, "I can see you're all falling asleep."

Such a stark difference in the songs on The Bends and pre Bends. Going from My Iron Lung to Prove Yourself was like two different bands. Two different personalities. So amazed at what they grew into

This live performance is perfect in every single way. Vocals, guitars, timing, sound, everything. Amazing to see how they were at being a pop band. It's also amazing to see how much depth there already was in this band and how they could evolve to become the most important prog band of the last 25 years.

It's so cool to see how the seeds of what they would release in later years are all here, how the dissonant guitar parts later made their way into songs like Gloaming, Idioteque and Bodysnatchers. I love how Ed plays the ambient parts, specially in blow out, I can see how this got evolved into tracks like Treefingers and even House of Cards. This concert was like an anthropological study of how musicians evolve over time if they let themselves grow and not get stuck with a particular sound just because it became popular. Thank you for sharing this!

I still have this on DVD and VHS and could never tire of watching it. It reminds me so much of when I saw Radiohead for the first time, around 10 months after this gig, at the Roadmender in Northampton. The Bends had only just come out and I hadn't bought it yet so I went to the gig not knowing any of the songs from it (apart from My Iron Lung and High And Dry) and it was in complete awe at how incredible the music was and how brilliantly they played it. I wasn't really sure what to expect from them, never having seen them live before, but they were a million times more amazing than I could have imagined and then some. I still remember being completely mesmerised hearing songs like Fake Plastic Trees and Street Spirit for the first time. I went out and bought the album the following day and couldn't stop playing it. It's still one of my all-time favourite albums (every single track on it is magnificent). I saw the band again in 1997 (at Gloucester Leisure Centre) and it was an incredible concert too but nothing can beat that Roadmender gig for me. It's still the best concert I've ever been to, by anyone, ever!

street spirit is definitely one of radioheads most heart-breaking songs. it is so emotional, beautiful and yet so dark and sad. i love it so much, would love to see it live one day! thom is literally immersing his soul in this song (as well as the other members of the band) everytime he performs it. i can't describe or even understand the way i feel while listening to it, it is just out of this world

Possibly the first time at a gig every single 'new song' utterly eclipsed the songs the audience already knew and actually came to see.
