  • “Stop bursting crackers”, “don’t pollute the air”, and “don’t scare the animals”, are some very
common lines that we get to hear on and around Diwali every year.

Diwali symbolizes the spiritual victory of light over darkness good over evil and knowledge over
ignorance. It is a time when people embrace one another with joy and laughter. Nearly 1.2 billion
Hindus celebrate Diwali every year but quite often there are a lot of restrictions imposed on the
    festival.

Instead of stubble burning, farmers should sell the harvested waste biomass to biogas production units. The biogas units can use those biomass for production of biogas and fuels through processes like gasification and saccharification of wastes. Also the farmers can use the biomass for mushroom cultivations. I think this might help reduce air pollution levels.

@@vinodyadav-ip1se Harvested waste I believe is referring to the wheat stock that is left in the farm lands after harvesting the grains. It is of no use to the farmer, however it can be used to create biofuel, or even used as natural decomposed fertilizers. Once again, we can infact celebrate Diwali in different ways, I for one do not burn fire cracker and have no interest in adding to the pollution, but that doesn't mean we should take away the joy of celebration from the other kids and families. It is also about fairness, why exactly is Diwali targeted every year? But not other holidays like Eid, Christmas etc. There is mass slaughter of animals on Eid and huge deforestation during Christmas, but no one talks about it. But when it comes to Hindu festivals, there seems to be no end to the criticism.

Again just stand in a busy street where you can hear extreme noisy cracker sounds. You 'll notice the street dogs will be running madly. If you have one dog in your house you 'll be able to realize how scared/traumatized it 'll become during these times...then imagine the dogs in the streets.

Thank You for enlightening Keerthi. I would however like to know the breakdown of the Air pollution numbers during the specific days when Diwali is celebrated so that specific comparisons can be made on how much air pollution following Diwali is due to Diwali and rest due to stubble burning.

Thank you Keerthi for discussing on this at right time. Myself from Sivakasi has seen how people work on factories to manufacture crackers in a way that affects their body and health. But it is our livelihood and we work to bring smile on people's face while bursting crackers on Diwali. Your points are absolutely true. As you said, let us enjoy diwali asusual and reduce pollution that we individuals make on daily basis.

I live in an apartment complex. Here people come in large numbers and cracks huge quantities of crackers at one designated place. The apartment's own buildings near the celebration area get most of the dust inside. It is very difficult to breathe good quality air for 2-4 days. It is not easy for people who have allergy or sick. There shd be some or complete restriction on diwali cracker celebration in apartment complexes.

but bursting crackers on diwali was never our tradition, it was brought in only after the 18th century! and india started manufacturing only after independence, obviously common people would not have had the ability to burst prior to that ! diwli has been celebrated for 1000 s of years and you take something that has been done the last 75 years your tradition why? everyone is so concerned about protecting the culture and tradition by bursting crackers while most people don’t even know the real reason we celebrate diwali or the story behind it ! Our tradition or culture can be passed on to the future generations only if we start looking into the meaning of it
