Hey Steve, I've just started watching LFR this season and I have to give you my thanks for making entertaining content about the Leafs. I'm not even a Leafs fan and I find myself drawn in by your enthusiasm and honest thoughts about a team you're passionate about. I don't know if I can, as a Canucks fan, stomach watching LFR if the Leafs make a deep playoff run but your content at least gives such a run some upside.
I also wanted to say thank you for focusing on what you did this video. It's good to see somebody as deeply entrenched in sports as you are taking this stance on homophobia. We need more voices like yours in sport and everywhere else as well.

Im a die hard leafs fan and i always will be, but I’m not expecting much this year. I’m not gonna blame a player or put it on Babcock (yet) but this TEAM isn’t built to win a championship. The core is an offensive core and will not become a defensive core. They will always be playmakers. You have to insert physical gritty players and a good defense around them. One of the poorest excuses I've heard in a long time was Babcock saying, "We'll make you pay with our power play". Big deal, that means every team knows they can manhandle the Leafs and there's no consequence. And if the power play keeps playing like it has recently, those words ain't gonna scare anyone. It's almost worth it to end the season with Marincin and bring up Borgman and anyone who has size or can lay a hit once every three games. As much crap as we give Hainsey, he's at least not afraid to hit someone in the defensive zone.

There was no slur spoken. That is just really awkward timed audio. That was Rielly just saying the F word followed by someone yelling "Rag it" Most likely a Lightning player shouting to the D Man with the puck to buy time so they can make a change.
It took me a whole 2 listens to figure that out. I don't know how this could even be construed another way. Yeah in the moment when it happened in real life I could understand the confusion and how the mistake could be made. But we have the clip and it's not even the same guy talking when it occurs and what gets said isn't even that slur anyway.

  • @kryskobold
    @kryskobold Před 5 lety +4

I think we should all calm down about the slur and stop blindly attacking Reilly. First of all, I watched the clip and it appears that whoever said it is saying "Rag It," which is a commonly used term by players on the ice. This seems likely since you can hear "Rag Rag Rag" directly after. Moreover, after the goal is scored, you can hear a fan shouting "That's your fault, Nylander," which means we can't rule out that the audio came from a nearby fan. That being said, if the homophobic slur was used, I have no tolerance for it as a member of the LGBTQ community myself. I just think we should wait until we have definitive proof to attack anybody for this. Let's use our BRAINS people.

I’m pretty sure the guy who said the slur was a fan because right after the lightning scored a shortty you can hear someone say, “that’s your fault Nylander!” And it’s sounds like the guy who said it

    (Not my comments)
While walking the blue line, Rielly thinks he is hooked by Paquette. Right after, you hear a voice screaming something along the lines of “[inaudible] FUCKING HOOK…..”. I believe that this is Rielly’s voice, expressing frustration towards the ref for the non-call.
Shortly after, before Rielly crosses his own blue line you hear someone say “FUCK...”. This is the exact same tone of voice from before and is said by the same person (Again, I believe this is Rielly’s voice)
Right after we hear a voice in a different tone say “Rag it”. I’ve played this over hundreds of times and it is definitely two different tones. I strongly believe this is someone from the TB bench telling Yanni Gourde to “Rag it”. Rag the puck.
Rag: To retain possession of the puck by skillful skating and stickhandling without attempting to score, as a deliberate tactic intended to use up time. TB was on the PK, and since Gourde had time and space, it would be wise to waste as much of it as possible.
Here is a video with audio and subtitles. I HIGHLY suggest you listen to this with headphones/earphones.Streamable Link: streamable.com/s47dp
Here is part 2, using audio from the replay of the goal. Streamable Link: streamable.com/8sobp
Lastly, I believe that had Rielly really said that slur to the referee, he would have received a penalty. The fact that the referee had zero reaction is what made me doubt this.
Overall, I hope that Rielly really did not say that. In fact, I hope that nobody did. Homophobic slurs have absolutely no part in this game, or in this world. I hope the NHL and Toronto Maple Leafs are able resolve this matter.
"I'm going to piggy back here since you're the top post.
Full disclosure I am a Tampa fan.
From all the clips I definitely thought Riley said what is being accused. I then saw the Twitter chain and listened and thought it was plausible but it also could have just been homerism on the OP. I also wasn't sure if I heard the 3 rags I saw being claimed were said. I was conflicted but leaning toward the "rag it" side as it does make sense but skeptical because of the power of influence, especially with those subtitles.
I now am 100% on the rag it side and here is why. I saw this czcams.com/video/sQy-VSoyu5A/video.html which is the same clip but from the Tampa feed. They clearly have different mics because you don't hear that clear as day "Fuck" like in the SN clip. However you hear much cleaner someone saying "Rag it" and with 100% certainty hear the 3 "rag" after.
I hate intruding into other teams subs but wanted to share this with you all because this is a serious allegation and figured you'd all like more evidence towards the rag it argument."

I actually don't think any less of Morgan Rielly if it was him who said that slur. I truly believe people make mistakes and don't mean the things they say sometimes. I have a friend, who is gay and curses by using the word f*ggot'. I had asked him about why he uses that word to curse and he explained that it's just the way the word sounds when he curses that makes him feel better when letting out frustrations. He told me it had nothing to do with the actual meaning of it.
I'm not sure if I can agree with that but in a way, it makes sense. I hope we can all move past this and accept this mistake, because we all sure as hell make them.

Nobody said fa**ot, it was Reilly saying fuck cause he got hooked, and also someone on the tampa bench saying "Fucking rag it!". Watch the Tampa broadcast and its very obvious.
