Just rewatched the pilot. James' voice/accent changed completely over the course of the series.
I think after the series was picked up he started taking voice lessons to sound more Jersey
The pilot was made in 1997, but David chase worried that HBO wouldn't pick up the show, so he went to another company to make it into a movie, until the last day where HBO contacted him and let him know they liked the pilot and asked him to make a full season. James gandolfini took voice lessons to improve his NJ accent during the year and a half long gap.
Don't know if it's just me, but I feel like his voice also changed after his hospital stint in season 6. And I'm not talking about his dreams.
When I finished the finale, I went back to the pilot and legitimately thought my audio had messed up
Pure Kino...He never had the makings of a varsity Borko
Didnt I tell you not to say that again!!
Nobody’s got Borko, and I don’t wanna hear that word in here again!
You might run this chanel but you don't run your uncle Borko
Borko is an over glorified sopranos you tuber who does nothing except upload small Sopranos clips. Doesn’t even get ad revenue.
@@PureKino borko will tell the girl cousins!
Strangely enough, the tone of the pilot was one of the things I found initially appealing. It has that kind of late ‘90’s confidence and swagger, definitely feels like a dark comedy as much as a mob drama, and I really dig the richer colour palette of oranges and beige compared to the later seasons’ blues and greys. Overall it feels a lot more in line with something like Oz, whereas the later seasons are definitely more sleek and modern in terms of their style and visuals.
Oz seemed like high school on season one. Then by season 2, Miguel is put on permanent restriction and in for life.
@@Filthy_Larry bro what high-school you went to
@@gage6082 i went to an alternative school for three years then got paroled back to the district for the remaining. Prisoners in Oz behave like bad kids.
It represents Tony having to grow up but really it’s just Tony’s last sense of naivety dying off like his family.
i dont know if it's weird but "you never had the makings of a varsity athlete" is my senior quote.
That's not weird, that's awesome 👍
It's under EVERY Sopranos video!
It’s undermining!
Pretty based actually
Some fun facts about the pilot; it’s the only episode to feature interior shots of the Soprano house shot on location in the actual private residence, all other interior shots were on a rebuilt replica on a sound stage. The pork store used was Centanni’s, a real meat market in New Jersey, after the episode there were complaints which prompted producers to buy a vacant lot and used it as Satriale’s. The episode is one of the only instances to feature narration from a character (Tony talking to Melfi). The character of Silvio is introduced as an acquaintance of the mob not their consigliere, he asks Tony if he recalls Artie Bucco which would never make sense going forward being all three of them have known each other since school and have a close relationship. Michael Imperioli didn’t have a drivers licence nor knew how to drive at the time of filming but lied to shoot the scene driving Tony, in which he crashed the car multiple times and was almost fired. Drea De Matteo is credited as a waitress in the pilot but producers liked her so much they wrote her into the show as Adriana. The characters of Father Intintola and Irina are both played by different actors in the pilot than who would play them throughout the remainder of the show.
Side note...Irena appears in episode 3, her husband(real life) is one of the Russian gang members who hauls Christopher to the docks for a mock execution.
I really like the symbolism of Junior holding up the traffic behind him with Liv riding shotgun. Junior may have had the makings of a varsity athlete, but not that of a competent boss.
I like the pilot....it really drew me in. It is different from the rest of the series but I was hooked instantly....
I think the therapy scenes really set it apart from everything else. It was clear from that start that this was going to be a show about emotions and psychology
Completely agree
@@PureKino definitely agree about the therapy scenes. I looked forward to those the most and got said when Melfi wanted to stop in the beginning lmao
Seems to me Pure Kino may be missing an important point when trying to sell a younger crowd on the Beat/Shake down and chase scene.....back then, it was PRE 9/11, there were ZERO smart phones (and therefore cameras) and it would all be based on eye witness testimony. There were many good reasons to believe an infamous mobster could get away with these actions without legal consequences.
Me too !
Comparing the pilot to “Made in America”, it’s amazing how cinematic the production had become by season six.
But Patsy said that it wouldnt be cinematic.
No kidding! It goes from this light "Get Shorty"/Sonnenfeld kind of tone in episode one, to Kubrickian-levels of clarity in cinematic conception by Season 6... those last couple episodes, I get chills just thinking about.
That’s part of the appeal of the first two seasons for me. Those late 90s production values and aesthetics. A prime example is the College episode. He strangles Febby in brutal fashion, but the episode ends like a sitcom with him explaining to Carm about his therapist 😂.
The same can be said even comparing the pilot to the last episode of season one. A lot of development in this season from beginning to end.
@@finsfan90 he was talking about something else, to be fair.
The first thing Tony is looking at in the series is a representation of his mother, and the series ends just as he looks up to see his daughter.
Remember a pint of blood costs more than a gallon of gold.
the look on every ones face after he says that LOL
Che puzza!
06:55 I'm glad you caught that Pure Kino, very observant. The sacred and the propane.
Propane and propane accessories
Another good mention would be how Adriana was the hostess in the restaurant and had no accent or connection with the sopranos. Great video!
Wow Tony looks comparatively svelte and healthy in the pilot, compared to the walking corpse he looks like in the final episode. Wow, that role did a number on poor ole James Gandolfini.
Did anyone notice Meadow’s nose was wildly different in the pilot??
@@brettbaratheon9776 yes, especially in one of the episodes where tony was in the hospital, there’s a scene with her and AJ when AK said he took some pepto bismol. Her nose looks so upturned
@@brettbaratheon9776 i thought something was different
What happened to her nose?
@@julianbluefeather8491 plastic surgery
In regards to the scene where Tony is chasing that guy in the car, I think it's entirely possible that the reason it seems so ridiculous is because it may not have happened that way. We are seeing it through Tony's recollection, it very well could be his ego. Like in his own he's imagining an entire crowd of people witnessing him doing this, but he's so well connected that he can just get away with it.
Good point on junior's driving slow. Most of the time on any show whenever they're driving theyre going like 70 mph on a super clear no traffic road making no turns and peering to the side 😂
We all know what happened when Christopher tried that
@@PureKino 😭😭😭
@@PureKino he had a heavy foot that kid. Always
I always figured junior says "you may run north jersey..." because Tony was defacto boss with Jackie in the hospital.
Tony was street boss at this time
Notice how Uncle June's glasses went from nearsighted in the pilot to farsighted in the rest of the series. And Satriale's pork store was Centanni's in the pilot.
"He's got a wife and kids who kinda break his balls..."
That's an issue that only gets worse
I think they use the same shot when Carmella is visiting Melfi by herself to show the parallels between the two.
Uncle Junior -
"Mr Magoo" ~ Christopher
I thought this was one of the best pilots to any show. There are no tone issues. The public run down. Tony is a known mob captain. I always saw them getting away with it as a demonstration of the power that fear of the mob holds even now that there hey day is long gone.
Carmela dressed very un-Carmela-like in the pilot....
Everything about it was so much simpler compared to the rest of the show 😩
Tony want boss yet
Wasn’t *
iPhones version of swipe sucks
@@migmogg8087 but in the pilot, Tony was the boss.
"You may run north Jersey, but you don't run your uncle Junior."
The Sopranos channel we actually needed aside from Talking Sopranos. Great review brother, i’ll be binge watching the other reviews you’ve uploaded to catch up. 👍🏼
James gained like 30 years of age in the six seasons this show was on.
This actually teaches more than the talking sopranos recap does
Agree on tone, but there’s nothing to be embarrassed about when showing and starting the show here to newcomers
Wow, I wouldve thought you started this series much longer ago. But 2 years? damn the flex of this show on full force having dedicated creators all this time in the future.
3:36.. I never noticed that Sylvio didn’t know who Arthur Bucco was in this episode...
I always thought that was odd myself. Sylvio and Tony were childhood friends. As were Tony and Artie. How could he not know him? Did the gang not eat at his restaurant until Tony became boss? Doesn't add up.
Not to mention that they are surprised to see Sil at satrials? Asking him what he is doig there? And he says his wife likes the gabagool!
@@coreytumulty816 same thing with Vito being in the bakery when Chris shoot the cashier in the foot
@@jhennyclothing I think that was supposed to be a one off though, they made him a regular cast member later
I am about to binge the living heck outta this review series.
This is exactly the kind of Sopranos video I was looking for so thanks
Your channel is awesome!!! I am a sopranos junkie and your videos still show me things I never realized before. Please keep them coming bud.. you definitely earned my sub .
I initially did not watch The Sopranos because the pilot had a discount Goodfellas vibe.
I'm glad i eventually watched the entire series several times.
After you’ve seen the sopranos a couple of times this pilot really has a different tone than the first time you see it
Fun fact the Vesuvio scene/restaurant (3:07) seen in this episode was filmed in Elizabeth, NJ in my neighborhood and that restaurant still stands till this day it’s named Manolo’s.
I don't know if someone else already wrote that, but Silvio puts out the fire after Tony's panic attack, then proceeds to start a fire on Vesuvio = The details
The 'between the legs' shot is also mirrored, in the Bing, using dancer's legs.
Did anyone notice how wildly different Meadow’s nose 👃 looks in the pilot compared to later on? She was super young to get a nose job, no?
Yeah I noticed it when I bought the DVDs years ago. I didnt no there was like a year between the pilot and season 1 being filmed but I guess that gave her ample time 2 heal but she was very young 2 b getting a nose job.
Review and recap every Soprano's episodes? You sir got yourself a new subscriber.
I just started watching your videos, I recently in the past three weeks re-watched the series so this is the perfect content for me. Looking forward to the rest!
I love your analysis, this is exactly what I was looking for when I restarted the series!
FANTASTIC in depth review. I'm enjoying your channel
Gonna binge this! Great work
I've come here to start your soprano's essays from the beginning. Ive watched many, I love them all and your dedication to doing so many episodes is appreciated so much. have my babies.
I have the exact same issue with the tone when trying to sell it to friends. I think the whole of the first series feels quite different but especially the pilot.
Great video! Only just found your channel (through the Little Carmine video) but I'm really enjoying your work.
Much like the Sopranos itself, here I am after the full review series ends, starting another round of rewatching.
I just wanted to say to you, Kino, you are really good at this. I'm no dumb-dumb, but some of the recurring themes and subtle details you pick up on throughout the series are so cool and would've otherwise passed me right by!
Great job on this whole thing!
Thank you! Lots of details I did not notice before
What a great channel. I can't believe you only have 2K subs.
Another difference, Satriale's is named Centanni's in the pilot.
I had such a great time watching these as they came out, rewatching now for thrills. OOHH!!!!
Cold and rainy here at the lake in NE Oklahoma..I think I'm gonna start from the beginning and watch it all again tonight. Thanks Kino!! 💜🤘😊
Glad to have found the channel. This’ll be something fun to watch
Bro keep the reviews up! Finally a sopranos channel!
Starting a rewatch For the movie Let’s go Gonna go through all your videos
I wanted to watch the greatest series ever on TV but I compromised and watched the "pilot" of the greatest series ever on TV, The Sopranos.
Thanks buddy. I'm 20 years too late. I'm trying to delve into this. I'm into real mob history and some of the characters seem mirrored after real mobsters.😁
It was the charcoal briquette that caused him the panic attack
Holy hell......so people pick apart the first episode because of the car chase/beat down scene?
I was on the cusp of my 20s (18 or 19) when the show began. Let me tell you, this scene was INFINITELY MORE BELIEVABLE in '00, pre-9/11 than any of you who are too young can possibly know.
We even talked about it, but it was NOWHERE NEAR as unthinkable as it would be post 2000s. This is not even an issue.
Fun fact: Scorsese doesn’t like the sopranos and has said that more than once
Have he Said why?
Well maybe he's a flambe
@@dabshanksthe1st488 Allegedly
That's nuts. I never knew that.
Scorsese is a hack, he's made 2 great movies, 1 play and everything else is terrible
I just started what is possibly my 6th watch-thru (just finished Oz for the first time; I'm 80/20 about it) of The Sopranos and I have noticed that on this watch (I'm still in early S1) and the last two, I have skipped the pilot episode. I don't hate it, but it's like if I'm listening to Nirvana on Pandora, I always skip "Smells like Teen Spirit", or if I'm listening to Manson, I always skip "The Beautiful People".
It's interesting what you notice when you rewatch. I'm definitely noticing new details I missed the last time I watched
@@PureKino oh for sure; what I like about Sopranos clips here on CZcams is I can see and notice fine, small details that I would otherwise miss on the big screen; I love these reviews/video essays too btw!
Good work, I just saw that you have a video on gone with the wind, which my ex girlfriend loved and I really enjoyed even if it was so similar to an Italian novel and film (that came out after but is also so well done) called "The Leopard", "Il Gattopardo" which more of an analysis of a type of man disappearing and the shift from the feudal, aristocratic system and values, to the more 'modern', oligarchic/democratic ones. But really War and Peace is the greatest novel I have ever had the pleasure of reading! Its amazing in so many ways, every sentence could be the an opening sentence for a short story, thats how well written it is!
Anyway im excited for this channel, will be watching for more sopranos and other content bro!
Thank you so much! There is so much great stuff out there!
I always hate how Silvio has no idea who Artie is- Lol
Just something we have to live with. Let the past be bygones
Same with Vito appearing in the bakery when Chris shot the cashier in the foot
@@jhennyclothing oh yeah- "Gino" Lol
@Pure Kino - Your closing theme music for these Sopranos video series: I won't sleep until I learn who the jazz trio is. Bill Evans came immediately to mind (those chords are killer), but I don't recall Bill doing this tune. And thanks for these summaries. I may have to take a second journey through this epoch-making series.

@@PureKino Thanks. Must now go find a mattress, quickly!
im not a native english speaker but im still watching the shownin english, so these videos actually help pointing some stuff out that i mightve missed due to slang/phrases i dont know
Rewatching this I just realized the actor that plays Adriana later, also plays the waitress in the restaurant in this episode.
To be fair I've seen real videos of random guys beating the crap out of someone and people avoid confronting them to avoid conflict. Great reviews!
What's also interesting about you mentioning Uncle Jun driving in the pilot & other people taking him over is later on in season 2 he says "some people are so far behind in the race they actually believe they are leading."
Great video👍🏻
Can't wait for the many saints of Newark
I noticed that in the pilot Junior has different glasses, and the pork store is called Centanni instead of Satriale's
The pilot is actually one of my favorite episodes of the series. I really liked the director choices and the pace.
Thank you I really enjoyed !
I'm glad :)
This was the happiest the gang ever was, it's all downhill from here
Keep em commin bro
Will do!
Carmella never touched a weapon again
Oh, I see Lorraine Bracco gained twice her age in the years of shooting, and Jimmy Gandolfini twice his weight :)
Only pilot that’s made me cry not afraid to admit it
Man, i need this type of review/analysis for the Battlestar Galactica series, the GOAT of SciFi aside from Old Trek.
BSG is one of my favorite shows of all time, and I want to a video on it someday!
Liking your work. 👍🏻
Tony in the pilot: Christopher.
Tony in seasons 2 through 6: Kwistuhfuh.
Kino you are the man..I’m hooked on your stuff. Keep it up!!! Question if you don’t mind. I just began a similar series on Sons of Anarchy, but CZcams blocked my first show..how do I get around this?? Any advice would be huge. Best wishes and please keep em coming!!!
Thank you! My only advice is to check CZcams's copyright policy for your options. Good luck!
Had to come back to see where it all started. Remember the good times guys.
Coming back to the beginning of the sopranos logs - let’s do it again!
Tony and his pool, his ducks, his bathrobe, reminds me of Al Capone in Florida.
Or the boss in Cleaver, whatever happened there…
Great shit
I never noticed how the burner on the stove was on with no pan on it when Olivia is at the table on the phone.
Kino needs to go get his his fkin shinebox
Tony looking at the legs of a naked female statue (641) reminds me of a similar scene in the movie, The Graduate.
This is Tony at his absolute peak, the finale is his ultimate bottom, chase doesnt miss details like this I think
could you do a review on Long Term Parking?
So right about the 1st episode being almost a bit satirical at times. Glad that HBO still gave it the green light and I wonder if it was ever close to not getting approved. 5:15 the way everyone is standing in that shot just seems so awkward and staged lol. Just contributes a bit to the overall awkwardness of the entire chase scene
Read a book on sopranos. The shot of tony between statue girls legs is mirrored by a shot through the legs of a dancer at bada bing
What’s the book called
@@jhennyclothing Maurice Yacowar The Sopranos On the couch. The Ultimate Guide. Its a antastic book, highly recommend it
@@MegaAslan10 have been looking for some good Sopranos books, thanks!
7:43 that time Junior and Livia went on vacation in England and Junior complained the whole time about driving on the wrong side of the road.
I think when Mccaffey got ran over, no one seen or heard anything for fear of retalition by soprano family associates, and didn't anthony have a cop or two in his pocket?
I am the biggest Sopranos fan on the planet... Can't wait to watch all of your videos.
I wonder if the tone is a bit different because maybe they were gonna lean more towards dramedy (real family is LIKE a mob family, and vice versa) than drama? Also, The over the top out in public chase scene that seems out of character for Tony reminds me of what happens at the end of THE SHIELD pilot. It's like, the Vic Mackey we get to know seems more clever than to do what he did. I figure in both cases they went over the top out of character just to put in bold letters what these guys were capable of. Some real shock value. But also, as you said, shows change from the pilot. Maybe the writers would have done something different if they had a season or two under their belts.
I can't relate to the tonys accent thing because i never saw the show in english. only in german, but i think the dub is very good. is it worth rewatching the show in english?
It's worth rewatching, period.
You haven’t seen The Sopranos if you haven’t seen it in English
HOW MANY FUCKING HOURS DID I SPEND PLAYING CATCH WITH YOU?
Thank You! I will finally know the plot!
4:50 me everytime in GTA lol
Please never ever delete these Sopranologs
One other thing that bothers me about the pilot is Jamie Lynn-Sigler's former nose. i was almost convinced that they hired a different actress to play Meadow after the pilot.
