He was so humble. Julia Roberts told a story about how she was excited to meet him at the Golden Globes and waved at him from her table. He didn’t wave back. She ran into him later and asked why he didn’t wave back, and he was so apologetic. He didn’t believe that a star like her would wave at him, genuinely didn’t believe that she was waving at HIM, so he didn’t want to embarrass himself by waving back.

It's interesting how they are talking in this clip how James wasn't like Tony, a bit of a hippy, educated, music lover. So if Tony the Family man and Tony the mob boss weren't close to James, I imagine Tony in therapy was close to his real character. In therapy Tony was thoughtful, observant and self doubting. I remember one scene where he just proclaims, 'Who cares, I'm just some fat crook from Jersey.' Demeaning himself, he's a powerful mob boss, but views himself as nothing.
While not as self deprecating, clearly James was this massive figure, big guy, intimidating and a huge star, but he was super humble, didn't think of himself highly. It's an interesting dichotomy, perhaps one Chase took note of.

Michael Imperioli nails it here when he mentions cinematic quality. Every episode of the Sopranos felt like a movie, not a television show. There were 86 episodes and it was as if it was an 86-part movie series.

You can arguethat he was one since season 1, when he was in the hospital scene laying down in bed, just constantly pushing for the drip type of pain medicine. I had the pleasure of briefly meeting Steve & Michael at a Tradeshow in Philadelphia back in the early 2000's. They were signing autographs & getting pictures taken with attendees at the old Adam's Mark Hotel off route 1. It's so cool looking back on that now while watching this Joe Rogan clip.
At the time I knew The Sopranos was big. Now in 2021 I know for sure that it's EPIC. These are some good dudes, and yes Gandalfini will be forever missed.

I have watched many good even great series, but time after time I will return to rewatch The Sopranos. Jim G. led a cast that were at their best as well . Almost every interview his co-stars say Jim was their mentor, their leader….his generosity as far as helping people out financially and in work of acting left a huge imprint on those people. RIP Jim and Tony. The Best.

Gandolfini was as great as anybobdy ever in this role but imo the whole cast was special. Between the regulars there was not one weak link. Even the smaller roles like Bobby were cast perfectly. And the writing was fucking incredible too. Some of those one liners by Junior, Paulie and Sil had me howling. Imperioli crushed it as the drug addict heir apparent. Not to mention the women who weren't just beautiful stand-ins but strong and passionate with great presence and feel for their roles. Just one of the greatest television of all time!

Steve honestly deserves more credit for his acting. Bobby Bacala was so mild-mannered and unwilling to get heavy in the mob, pretty easily pushed around by everyone from Tony to Uncle Jun, and he's really not like that in real life.

I have a friend that was one of the soldiers featured on HBO'S Baghdad ER, and he told me that when he was invited to the premiere for it in NYC James Gandolfini could not have been nicer, more down to earth, or more generous. The story he told involved James essentially bank rolling a night of drinking and eating for the soldiers that had attended the premiere and just genuinely caring to know them. His death was a loss to humanity.
