Norm is overrated. No one thought he was great until he passed. Get off the bandwagon.
I spoke with a woman who was an aspiring playwright/author back in the 70's & befriended Robin William's in Toronto before his Mork & Mindy fame. He was living there for a couple months for some reason (i forget what she said) and had some mutual friends, so she invited Robin to an acting/improv class that she was apart of & had regular diner meals together afterwards. According to her, he was very nice, polite, somewhat shy, NOT outgoing, whacky or zany and NOT really funny/charismatic at all. He had a sadness in his eyes. She remembered being SHOCKED seeing him on sitcoms & talk shows a few short yrs later & not recognizing this person at all! I think Robin's greatest performance was masking his true self & ongoing depression/mental illness.
He was manic depressive & she met him during one of his depressive states. A lot of Hollywood celebrities are like that btw.
He might not have been heavily into the drugs yet either.
Comedians are all depressed/po'd. It takes a cynic.
@@chrisharrje6690 I'm not saying doing drugs did nothing to him. But people who knew Robin from his Juilliard days have said that the Robin most people saw was what he was like. It just wasn't the only way he was like. And of course he wasn't going to present that shy, or that dark negative side to him for the whole world to see. It does come through in his dramatic work. It's true what they say a lot of comedic actors can be great dramatic actors, but you can't really teach a dramatic actor how to be funny. Given the right script they can turn in a comedic performance. But that is why actors who don't have experience with comedy. Like DeNiro when he decided to do comedy movies he made sure to have co lead or be in an ensemble. That way he or any other actor like him get to perform being funny but the script, the director and the other actor will be helping them out. They trust that they know what is and isn't funny because they themselves don't have that improvisational genius.
Look at Whose Line, when it first started and people enjoyed it. Executives saw how it was making them money on a shoestring budget, and that it was fairly successful So it would be even better if they could still do the shoestring budget but get it to become a gigantic hit if they could add stars. Preferably being able to get whichever actor were the hot new thing on TV that year. Or if getting a bunch of them would be to difficult to manage, then they could go the SNL route where they had 1 big star every week. Until someone pointed out that they could get the biggest stars in the world. But only a handful of them would have the ability to improvise the way their performers needed to. They could get lucky and hit a joke that landed 1 out of 10 times, doing it consistently would be a hold other ballgame. The only big name they got who could not just keep up but made everyone bring their A game was Robin Williams. Charlie Sheen once tried it and it was a disaster.
Oh good you can't spell for shit. And you think Robin killed himself because he was sad.
That’s why he’s called robbin

Idk about the joke stealing, if that many people say so, then sure, but Robin's off the cuff improv was second to none... Still haven't seen any other comic be able to immediately dive into an improv skit so effortlessly, he was like a machine gun of jokes for whatever u threw at him, ain't no other comic has come close in that particular area of comedy... Thats where i give Robin his props...

joe still brings up carlos but never bothers to say the same for amy shumer and brendan shuab. and Carlos was still funnier than all of them. just saying carlos deserves a second chance when alot of comedians in the industry are all stealing
He’s spoke on Amy before
To be clear, the Mencia shit is arguably the crux of his entire success in his comedy career. Respectfully, Joe Rogan is not a particularly good comic. He became so respected in the community because he was willing to publicly confront a joke-stealing comedian who was way more successful than he was at the time, and he was convincing enough to get people on his side. Until then, he was just the Fear Factor and MMA guy. After that, he was recognized as a real comedian, even though it really wasn’t about his jokes as much as his street cred within the community.
Anyway, all I’m saying is that the Schumer and Schaub stuff doesn’t really benefit him to talk about. Mencia, however, was what sent him into orbit.
Carlos Mencia was NEVER funny... that sh*t was corny then and it's still corny now.. he's just not funny.. if u think he is you're just not a true comedy fan
Joe was just butthurt Mencia took a joke and made it funnier.

It's interesting how different comedy is from music though they're both performance based. In music, all classical musicians primarily play other people's music. Few people are writers, the majority are performers. Robin was a great performer.
Do classical musicians play Beethoven and claim it is their own though.
@@mnplumberman You would have to actually claim it as your own, which does'n't happen in comedy. At the end of a joke, a comedian is not going to say, "that bit was written by name," but in music, there is obviously a place to write it down.
@mnplumberman This analogy sounds great on surface but falls flat in reality. When playing at a bar or venue, like comics, musicians do not end every cover song with a full list of credits on who wrote the song. But I'm not equating the two. I'm saying it's interesting how the medium are so different.

I was lucky enough to work with a great teacher who was a joke doctor who was in Los Angeles during the comedy heydey on the Strip. When a comic started stealing my jokes I talked to him about it and he confided that it’s pretty common, a fact of life in standup. When I asked him who the joke stealers were in Hollywood he told me Robin Williams. I was so shocked. He said it was like he couldn’t help it and no comics wanted to perform their best stuff around him. I wouldn't say stole, I would say, passing happiness on to another. Some call it charity. I call It kindness.
No one better steal the old classic Stool Hump
Twenty Five years ago I was bartending at a comedy club and one of the comedians was at my bar talking and he told a story that Robin Williams would would write someone a $5 check if they accused him of stealing one of their jokes. So if he had that check joke cocked and ready to go at a moments notice, it must have been a common occurrence. He must have been flagrant when it came to stealing jokes, since this has been such a common echo over the years.
Yea a comedian no one has heard of, mentioning the great RW. What a surprise.
The story about RW writing checks is true, but that no name comedian you mention had zero to do with it nor did he wrote a joke about it, he was name dropping plain and simple.
@@juanticimo - What? That wasn't my point. This has been a steady echo that has always been around and this was just yet another instance. He didn't even say it with negative condentation towards RW or in first person... he said it because he thought the scenario with RW writing a $5 check was hilarious and I did as well. I now see it more in the context of it being messed up since he apparently did it a lot.
I personally have never heard Robin Williams tell a joke over the course of at least watching an hour or so of various interviews over the years. He just says nonsense with a goofy voice and no punchline and apparently the fact that he's acting silly and talking in a silly voice is the punch line. I realize earlier on he must have been doing a stand up act with actual material.. I've just never watched a clip of him doing actual material before.
@@juanticimoWhen did he say it was a no-name comedian?
No one stole your material joe. Your sets are not funny.
lol love it and very true
Exactly!
Haha that shit was quick
😅😅
That’s true, I don’t get into his standup, but the standup opened the doors to a great sitcom run ( though the ratings didn’t live up to how great the show was), to being the greatest mma announcer ever, and by far the greatest and most productive podcaster ever. No one bats 100 percent. Why is the standup so bad? It’s such a mystery when he is so hilarious on his podcasts. If he can transfer his podcast humor style to his standup he could be great- I hope he figures it out, but it seems like a long shot.
No one has stolen Joe’s jokes ever!!
