Virgil Van Dijk missing from Liverpoolâs team is obviously a massive loss, from an individual player perspective. But Van Dijkâs absence also has a butterfly effect on the rest of the side.
What effect does Van Dijkâs absence have on Liverpool as whole?

I think in reality, the biggest thing this video shows is how good Van Dijk is as a player in general. Not only is he an incredible defender, but also a playmaker, and in certain circumstances, a scoring threat. People like to look at attacking players like Salah or KDB or Fernandes, but Van Dijk (imo) was the most important player of the title winning Liverpool team.
What does imo means? Just want to know
@@griffith7615 in my opinion
It depends... I would say Salah, Van Dijk and Alisson are all equally important to that Liverpool team. Without Van Dijk they can't play that far up the pitch or take risks. Without Alisson, it's the same. Without Salah, they draw a lot of games, because they don't score a lot. Liverpool's struggles can be attributed to their lack of creativity in the midfield and their overreliance on Salah to score. With a fully fit squad, they are unstoppable, but the style of play is too difficult to sustain. The constant running takes its toll on the players. If Liverpool want to continue at the top, they will have to make some big changes in the midfield to give Salah space. A proper 9 would help them even more as it would take some pressure off Salah and add another goal-scoring threat.
@@johnorange1970 the lack of creativity point that has been pedalled for so long has recently just been disproven with our recent results. We finally have a 'creative' midfielder in thiago. But all your fill struggling to break down low block defences. A proper 9 will not help the situation since we can't create good enough chances now, therefore that player is essentially just waiting around for nothing.
@@SASMADBRUV7 Thiago is not the solution to Liverpool's creative problems. He's creative, but not enough to fix Liverpool's issues. He's a central midfielder who plays deep, not up front. What Liverpool need is a Coutinho/KDB kind of player that can help with opening up low-block defenses through key passes. Never mind the fact that Thiago has played a few games for Liverpool.
If the past few games have proven anything is that Liverpool need to change their tactics. They create too many chances through long balls and crosses, and not through passes.
Liverpool need to find a solution for these low-block teams.

It's not just van dijks injury that has messed everything up, it's the volume of injuries too. The team has no stability, there isn't a consistent group. That's also contributed to them being all over the place.
True. Van Dijk is a huge loss, no doubt, but the problem is compounded when plan B, C, D and E have to be thrown out because of even more injuries.
I'm sure Klopp had a plan for coping without Van Dijk, but I doubt the plan was playing Henderson and Fabinho in central defence.
@@jmckendry84 I agree but realistically it is not an excuse. I'd recommend Clayton Crowley's video on how American sports dynasties, specifically in the NBA, fall. Every team deals with injuries. I'm a disillusioned arsenal fan and we are also wrecked. Realistically it doesn't matter. Results have to come either way or you fall down the standings.
Problem is there's not enough change lol not that there's too much change. Klopp needs to change his formation, cuz liverpools got no anchoring CB now to push the team forward n press. Klopp needs to get fabinho or hendo at cdm in a 41212 formation allowing Trent and robbo to play as wingers again
@@BobSmith-yv6gy yes change is needed, but not 9 times a season. There's too much change for anything to stick. The only consistency is Robertson at left back Wijnaldum in midfield and Firmino in attack. Everyone else has been out for weeks at some point.

Liverpool fans laughed at others when we said vvd's loss would be catastrophic
The entire Liverpool attack works due to the promise of vvd in defence
Ever since his absence, taa has become less effective, their press isn't that intimidating anymore, and the front 3 have been heavily reliant on a more close link up to get in positions to score(overly reliant on firmino) or some selfish magic from salah
I have never seen a defender be so vital not only for the way a team played, but how it shapes up the league, vvd is truly a world class player
Ever since Liverpool started to drop points the top spot has always been for the taking, with united and city at the top and Leicester closely behind

The only solution to replace Van Dijk, is Van Dijk. He is irreplaceable because he fits perfectly in our system and he's one of the best defenders in the world
In fairness, the collapse canât solely be blames on van dijks injury; the sheer amount of terrible luck with injuries has destroyed the defence, and mentally weakened a previously unshakable squad
Also, it doesn't explain the lack of goals scored. It can't be all Van Dijk's fault for Liverpool conceding goals and also not being able to score them, theres 10 other starting players to assist with that!

@Ego Master I mean it's our tac tiks and it works as we've seen in recent years
@Ego Master Ok, and than by the time Virgil leaves we will have a different squad and we would need to use new tac tiks
This video is not fully accurate because Liverpool has struggled since the restart last season even with their full fit squad. Van Dijk was there in the second half of the season when Liverpool finished fourth and got battered by Real Madrid in the CL final in 2018. It was the arrival of Alisson that completed the puzzle and Liverpool had a formidable backline. Without either Van Dijk or Alisson, Liverpool's defense drop massively; Van Dijk is world-class, but he was not the man, it was the duo of Van Dijk-Alisson that brought assurance and leadership to the defense, freedom for fullbacks to glide forward, and consequently transformed Liverpool.
Good video canât wait for Sundayâs game. Would love to see you guys break down Cancelo for City.
Tottenham without Kane
Yeah... it should be highlighted for the past few seasons. During this period of time at half of league seasons we can celebrate "...Kane Injury Festive Period..."

Virgil and Henderson really go hand-in-hand. I hate to say it as a United fan, but that's a great duo who are anchors for Liverpool. I think people will be talking about them down the years like they do Vidic/Ferdinand or Terry/Lampard.
Hendo was the only player left that carries the Liverpool spirit.. if you get what I mean. I think he's the only player that played with Gerrard. I don't know if people finds that superstition but I felt United lost a player like Hendo and struggled to find their rhythm till start of the season. been thinking about this for months. the loss of player in van dijk's calibre will always be a huge problem.
watching liverpool play game by game, you'll notice that the main problem is not on the defence, Klopp seemed to be more careful not playing a too high defensive line and it affects how the full backs are not too comfortable in pushing forward, weve seen in games that robbo and trent now receiving pass into feet to ensure control, sacrifices intensity in going forward. Salah and Mane finding it hard to get into space since teams are now can just sit in their own half waiting for a counter, since liverpool now playing with no proper cover for their center halves, yes thiago is no defensive midfielder, nor Ox and gini wijnaldum, and teams are always going to exploit that.
in my opinion, van dijk's absence affects liverpool's offence rather than defence.Aside from that 7-0 win against palace, conceded 8 in 11 PL matches since december actually could be a pretty good record IF your team scores more which is not the case (scored 7 in 11 matches since december).

Losing Gomez, Matip and Jota for long stretches has deprived Liverpool of every solution to the Van Dijk problems posed here. Miraculous that theyâre within 7 points of the title still.
Tifo, can you do a video about liquidated clubs and which clubs you predict to dissolve (mainly those currently participating in the EFL) in the next few years. Would make an interesting video.
video idea: why is liverpool having such a hard time verses "small teams" while doing quite well against top tier clubs?
This has been going for years hahahahaha. Still baffled me to this day xD
Because small teams are compact and try to suckerpunch Liverpool. As the video explains, Liverpool can't defend as high without all of their centre backs, meaning Robertsom and TAA need concentrate themselves in a lower position on the field to mop up counter attacks. They've also lost most of their midfield spine due to injury or filling in at centre back. This ripple effect of problems has made it harder for Liverpool to break down defensive and compact opponents
Exactly
No we are not doing quite well against any team top or not.
As a Manchester United fan, I honestly feel bad for Liverpool losing all their center backs. So unlucky and I fell so bad for Klopp. Created such a good team and now his defense is terrible.

I do agree about the knock on effect, VVD really is the best CB in the world at the moment. Defensively sound and a utility player also. But a loss of a single CB with a world class manager like Klopp really shouldn't destroy a world class team like Liverpool. I believe Liverpools troubles this season actually game to fruition when they lost Gomez and Matip. A world class manager like Klopp can shift his team around like a good manager should be able to. But once your entire back-line is decimated and you lack the faith in your youngsters to step up, you end up in a horrible managerial position that Klopp is now under.

@@joebarnes100 I don't think you understand here. laporte was injured for almost the entirety of last season. this means, you either play stones/fernandinho, stones/otamendi, or fernandinho/otamendi. now maybe its just the fact that stones are "shit" last season, but even if he weren't, he has to play with 2 slow, short, old defenders that wouldn't cut it for a last man in defense. in hindsight, Liverpool do have fabinho now, who can cover for the other cb, its just that their options are running low with matip and gomez getting injured. this situation are probably worse than city's, but we can for sure use city's situation as a benchmark. if city finished last season with 81 points, then 70+ point for liverpool is considered an understandable end for the season.
@@mr.Inorichi as long as you realise it's a even harder situation Liverpool are in.
Hey tifo, you should do a video about Vasco da Gama, the club that changed the history of football fighting against racism in brazil. If you look into it, the history behind this club is the most incredible in the world, it really is. Search about the "Resposta HistĂłrica".

Here after the 4-1. Van dijk is surely missed

I think Joe Gomez absence makes it even worse. He is not at Van Djik level but he has proven himself more than capable of playing long balls to the front 3 while also retainning an astonishing speed recovering. If he was partnering with Matip for example that would free fabinho and Henderson for the midfield where they are very needed in the construction phase while also retaining the ability to play long balls from the back line. It would not be a Liverpool team at the same level as the previous season but it would be much closer.
Great video the solution to negate VVDs absence is to revert to the system Liverpool used in the 90s under evans as this gives Robertson and Trent the license to go forward and can help with midfield overloads especially if Henderson and Fabinho are in the wide CB positions.. they can sit in the double pivot allowing Thiago and Gini the license to go and press forwards.
Robertson and Trent can provide the with... Salah with the Mcmanaman free role with Origi and Mane occupying the Fowler and Collymore roles...
I feel this would solve a lot of the issues we miss with VVDs and Gomezâs absence as their pace is key to the high line we play and create space for the forwards to have better quality chances
"I used to skip English classes to watch Tifo Football..."
So what youâre basically saying is that Liverpool are a one man team.
Not really
We had the same issue(man city) last season
It's now happening to them
Vvd is the anchor of the team and everyone's comfortable pushing forward as long as he stays behind. Liverpool doesn't have that comfort anymore

Liverpool's defenders:
van Dijk: Machine (currently out of order)
Gomez: van Dijk's apprentice (also out of order)
Matip: Made of Glass (out of order)
Fabinho: Hard-Worker (out of order too)
Robertson: Attacker
Trent: Attacker
Tsikimas: Forgotten signing
Neco Williams: Trent's apprentice
Rhys Williams: The other Williams
Nat. Philips: Unknown player
Ben Davies: Not the one from Spurs
Kabak: New prospect
Lovren: Gone
last time I was this early, Van Dijk was fit :'(
Great analysis btw!
Here after thiago Silva injury đ€ đ
I think the change in the high line is due both a combination of adapting to Van Dijks absence and also klopps issues with VAR he expressed earlier in the season
Good video, one point though, Virgil always plays Left centre back so covers Robertson, rather than Trent.
I wish I could be celebrating Liverpoolâs awful title defense, but Iâm too busy crying myself to sleep as a Chelsea supporter
It's not really aweful. We're decimated by injuries. Not sure why people expect a team to play just a well will far inferior personnel. I was actually surprised we did very well for a while.
@@ranndino well that's pretty much true đ

Great analysis once again. But I think Liverpool could have still been better off having had fabinho and Henderson still playing in midfield. I think the continuous utilization of fabinho in CB and disrupting a fluid midfield of Hendo, Gini and Fab in order to have Fabinho in CB compounds on the VVD absence. Itâs unfortunate that also Gomez got a long term injury as well as Matip not featuring enough. But only having replacements in 2 positions i.e. CB rather than 4 (by playing hendo and fab in CB and having thiago and milner in midfield) means a less cohesive team all round. Thiago is a great player but still needs a well functioning team for him to also perform well and Liverpool havenât been that since he came back from injury. Jones deputised well for when fabinho played at CB but we still missed the dominant presence of fabinho in midfield as well as some of his cheeky passes over the top of defence at times.
Itâs more than just no VVD. Currently 8 first team players injured and all 3 first team CBs been out for the season
Van Dijk is the most irreplaceable player in football.
Messi and ronaldo?
Well on ability yes. But for specific clubs I would say no. Smaller teams really rely on one player sometimes
