    Defenders, expect the worst outcome, Attackers expect the best outcome, thats how u play proactive ✌

    • @faramund9865
      @faramund9865 Před 4 lety +11

      It's not about the worst or the best. As a defender you have to guess where the next pass will be simply by looking which player the person on the ball thinks is accessible, then right before the pass is made you close that space. So it's about reading the game, just look around you and see where would YOU pass if you'd be an attacker. Most likely that attacker WILL play the ball there.

      Faramund that’s not what it means, defenders expect the worst outcome for them and attackers expect the best outcome for them, so for attackers it’s a perfect through ball or something like that to them and for a defender it’s that perfect through ball to the player they r marking

    This year I'm playing in centerback in my high school tournament, and I gotta say - blidside defending is an absolute pain to deal with. One thing I've tried is to walk back when I see that there's going to be a cross soon, hopefully bumping into the attacker if he's behind me, then because I've moved back I can run a bit forward before jumping to clear the ball, so I can jump higher. But it sounds easier on paper - sometimes the cross is still behind me, the attacker can run around me while I'm moving back and then I'm out of position, and it's pretty hard to remember to do that every time I think there's most likely gonna be a cross.
    Here's a thing I want to try out in the next games: Maintaining full physical contact. Basically, if a cross is coming in, I can't take my eyes off the ball, but I also need to know where the attacker is without looking at them. So at the moment that "there's probably gonna be a cross in the next few seconds" I look behind me, if there's an attacker I go shoulder to shoulder with them and maintain the contact even if they try to run off, while keeping eyes on the ball. Just staying glued to them. idk if that will work, it sounds pretty hard to do but hopefully there's no other problem apart from having it take *lots* of pratice and always having special cases where it fails.

      This is the biggest mistake all defenders make, when they are ball watching the opposition player who is not posing any danger to you, practise to glance side to side always, meaning look at opposition player with the ball for a second and then glance around you, bit like when you are driving and still looking in your side view mirrors always, and practise to position your body better so you can move sideways just as quick as going forward hope this makes sense bit hard to explain easier to explain it on the training pitches.

    Great video!
    I’ve observed another weakness of his: he often fails to mark players after the shot is taken, leaving them wide open to score on the rebound. This is how Barca scored two of their goals in the first leg of the ucl, and also how Kane managed to get to that header in the recent Liverpool v Tottenham match.
    After the shot is off, he watches the ball, and forgets about the attacking players around him, leaving them free to put home the rebound

  • @alexkellison8130
    @alexkellison8130 Před 5 lety +4

    He's definitely an excellent defender, and perhaps the best in the world right now, but I'd suggest he's got another weakness that comes from one of his greatest strengths: his pro-activeness leads him to commit early, and often high up the pitch and out of position, which creates opportunities for sides that are highly effective in counterattacking football. His pace and Liverpool's overall high team work rate help to make up for this, but I think it has to be said that there is an element of risk in how he plays.

    • @forthealliance1772
      @forthealliance1772 Před 5 lety

      This is actually a false statement. He doesn't lose many 1 on 1 situations and when he does it's rarely high up the pitch. van Dijk is actually not a pro-active defender as I explained why Noumans analysis is wrong. You also don't understand that the cb's move more towards the sides of the fullbacks when Robertsen and Milner/TAA move up. This is the proper position to patrol. When the opposition counterattacks and the fullback is still up front the cb is exposed without being his fault. Hope this helps.

    • @alexkellison8130
      @alexkellison8130 Před 5 lety +1

      1) I didn't say that he frequently loses 1v1s, nor did I say that if he does that it happens far up the pitch, I merely suggested that him being high up the pitch creates risks for counters when it's just him and the other CB in the back. You can clearly see situations where that happens in this video and when you watch Liverpool play. I don't see anywhere where you're explaining how/why he's not a proactive defender.
      2) Make some videos that illustrate your points if you're so confident in your analysis. You suggest that the analysis in this video as well as my comments are incorrect because "...cb's move more towards the sides of the fullbacks..." - show us some evidence. What I see in this video and others that are similar is that there are spaces to exploit Liverpool on the counter.

    • @cat10179
      @cat10179 Před 5 lety

      Van Dijk rarely commits early he jockeys and contains and usually doesn't rush out of his defence to make tackles. He isn't an aggressive defender similar to Raphael varane very calm and composed. On the contrary koulibaly and Ramos chase the opponent out of their position. IDK maybe give me an example of when he did that ?

    • @alexkellison8130
      @alexkellison8130 Před 5 lety

      Did you watch this video? It’s literally full of the evidence you’re asking for; he’s committing early to intercept the ball or steal it early off an attacker’s foot in pretty much all of the clips.

    • @forthealliance1772
      @forthealliance1772 Před 5 lety

      @@alexkellison8130 You described it as a weakness. Perhaps you confused necessity with weakness since playing in Klopp's system requires the cb's to move high up the pitch to pin the opposition down and circulate the ball in more advanced positions. I deliberately said that he doesn't lose many 1vs1's to eliminate the possibility of a weakness. When the fullbacks are high up the pitch one of the midfielders drops back between the two cb's creating a back of 3 so it's not just 2 cb's.
      Since his Southampton days he was a passive defender, sitting deep, soaking the pressure. Now that he plays for Liverpool he is still not a proactive defender. Nouman got this wrong since pro-active means that the defender commits to pressure his opponent and leaves his position to do so. He's actively trying to disrupt the attack. If you've seen enough games of van dijk you will see that he he waits and invites the take on while positioning himself to intercept or engage in a duel. This is passive defending. The few clips Nouman shows are misleading and do not represent van dijks style of play.
      I dont have to make video's to back my claim. You can visit footballwhispers, a site that deals with analysis and you'll find them more thrustworthy that Nouman who's just one of many youtubers who're trying to give an analysis of games. Their deductions do not require a big brain, it's pretty straight forward once you understand the basics of formations, tactics and preferences of coaches.

    On that Maguire goal, it is a blindside run but it’s important to put into context that Liverpool often play an aggressive offside trap, especially from set pieces. It’s likely that he expected the Liverpool defenders to his to step up, so the goal was caused by a combination of a lack of awareness and miscommunication/understanding amongst the team.

    Man Utd fans bringing up Vidic's stats and saying that he has "more tackles, interceptions..." but they fail to realize why VVD is so good. He doesn't need to make a tackle all of the time because his reading of the game is phenomenal. Compare Busquets and Kante. Kante tackles more, but Busquets is better purely because he has the brains and technical quality that puts him a level above. This is VVD in this situation. And his calmess, leadership and distribution cannot go unnoticed either. He might not have the trophies, but individually, he's such a great CB and can be compared to Terry, Rio and Vidic. He just doesn't have the years and accolades yet. Easily the best and most complete CB in the world right now.

    Though I believe he's far away from being the world's best defender. His build-up play may be safe and he can find wingers with long balls but I believe you cannot be the world's best defender without having extra value in build up by cutting lines with passes on a regular. Look at Boateng and Bonucci 2016, they were/are absolute masterclass. The offensive impact of defenders has become too important to be neglected.

    Honestly it gets me outraged when people say attack is more important then defense and that you need a good midfield. Of course it is important to have a stable midfield but where do the midfielders get the ball from when the play restarts. THE DEFENCE. if you have an amazing defence and don’t concede goals you will have a high chance of getting a draw an I would prefer that then the score being 5-4 to the other team. Not many people realize how much you have to use your brain to calculate how to be a cb. I am captain for my school team and vice for my club team.

      HenSt1985 who do you think is the right partner ?

    • @HenSt-gz7qj
      @HenSt-gz7qj Před 5 lety +3

      I think Mathias De Ligt would be a very good partner, he's quite the opposite of Van Dijk.
      Aggressive and good tackler, he's also quite good at moving forward and tracking back, kind of a libero IMO.
      He and VVD can make a great combination for both club and country too.
      The biggest problem thou, is that Barcelona also wants him for Pique replacement... and he is very expensive (around £80mil IIRC)

    • @advenco344
      @advenco344 Před 5 lety

      Zuhair Yassin Joe Gomez was already on his way of becoming that. He would always cover for Van Dijk. Unfortunately injuries are ruining this partnership that was forming so well.
      As for De Ligt, he would be fantastic as well and there is the added bonus that they play with each other in the Dutch team, but it looks like Barcelona or PSG will most likely acquire him.

    I think that weakness he have is so lettal, couse the most important job of a central back is the back, and i say this about experience, and have the same mistake but, if he work a lot the back, he could be the best central back of all history

    Why this veerappan was made to run at 45' angle by the red passer for? Instead of a straight 180' pass to veerappan , that would have saved him running and still reaching late for the boll, cause long runs mean decrease in sprint speed and chances of opponent player catching up

    I would also argue that although his long passes have a great accuracy, they often result in nothing good. I know it's a thing in Liverpool to work the ball with speed, often passing the ball vertically, but this idea of skipping the midfield to build an attack doesn't really please me. I think there's a huge difference between being accurate and being promising. Edit: but yes, hands down, not only the best in the league, the best at the moment, along with Thiago Silva.

    When putting up stats like number of headers won its always better to put them up as a percentage than as a raw number. 98% has far more meaning than 104 headers won....
