I came here just to watch this in remembrance of my grandpa. He passed last week. He LOVED this engine
That KW represents the end of the golden age of trucking
maybe, until the next golden age of trucking
And peterbilt
Once upon a time before the DEF.....
@@mewkatlolTHERE WILL NEVER BE A GOLDEN AGE AGAIN 😶
@@2FLY-gs1qt ppl are looking for these old trucks to run nowadays
A Kenworth W900 with a 3408 Cat? My grandpa would be drooling. Absolutely gorgeous truck.
One thing about the 3408s you get absolute reliability as long as you treat them right. I've owned one in a KW cabover here in Australia for over 20 years and the only time it let me down it grenaded a turbo once. It's hauling A trains @ 175,000 lb, sometimes up to 265,000 lb. It's still working hard to this day.
The more weight you put on, the more the fuel mileage is the same as a late model engine.
I think his engine could do with an in-frame though, it took a long time to start. Mine smokes at cold but nothing like that. When it's hot it doesn't blow much smoke at all.
They are something of a legend here in Oz, KW only made about 30 here. I think KW and Pete made a lot more in US.
Thanks for chiming in mate. Sounds llike you have a hell of a work horse!
man y'all boys are badass down there!!
I've been watching those videos!!!
y'all ain't about nothing but RAW BLOODY ASS POWER!!!
I LOVE IT!!!
+BigRig Videos 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍🙋
pity this bloke doesn't just drive this banger like you do Chris......
very strong cat big block.....17972ccm.....in us gcm just 36300kg.....australia is a heavy weight champion in the world!the Mad Hungarian tipper lorry drivers inside the mine .... my colleague last week 62500kg on gravelmine private weigh bridge....12 tyre,5 axles semi, one drive axles scania r420......
My grand dad had a 3408 (650 hp) and my dad had a 1693 (600 hp) cat power pulled over weight loads for years.. both were 5 by 4 with 2 speed rears total unstoppable trucks indeed
Only thing they don't pass is a fuel pump
I remember when that sound was as common as the boom-box music we hear now.
Jeeze the 3408 sounded good when she was pulling hard and rolling smoke.
Keep'em Rolling!
Idled like a washing machine full of bottles
That's a thing of beauty! A truck you can feel as you go down the road pure and simple power. Whata sound!!
A guy here in New Zealand bought a new Mack Superliner with a 3408 opened up to 600hp in it. He used a Bolster and 3 axle Jinker set-up to cart 12m (40ft) Douglas Fir logs from Kaingaroa Forest to the Port of Napier. It went very well, thank you very much! A beautiful truck also.
Tu te Kohe ~ Was that Bob Stout (Uncle) from Taupo or someone else ???
Remember that being a Cat man it went VERY well for its time , Maroa Logging had Mini and Mo KW with 3408s as well nice set up with Allisons
my dad had one of them V8 cats with a 5×4 transmission. that's what I learned how to drive trucks. it was in a peterbilt. then a KT 600 Cummins with same drivetrain. way to go
Old school cat sounds are to die for
Old school cats are ‐about‐ the only ones we can hear nowadays
One thing that made the distinct sound in the 3408s was they had a different angle on the V that being said when you worked on one the rod journals on the crank looked like they were sheared which gave that engine a very distinct sound
music to my ears. I could listen to that 3408 all day
Anyone else have a huge smile on watching this!! Beautiful
No, its just a crap start…
one of the best sounds yull never forget hands down
I think the screamin detroit diesels sound better but they are fucking obnoxious lol
Had one in a 1978 Pete EXHD with a 6x5 over and it would get you in trouble if you let it real fast with the law. Fuel mileage was not the best out of one of those engines, 4-5 miles to the gallon, but it could get the job done.
Also had one in the same year truck that stayed in the Cathouse more than on the road and Cat dropped an experimental 3406 engine as a replacement by accident. That white cat engine would do 600kw on a dino.
Love them old v8 Cats. Had A 3208 in A Topkick beer delivery strait truck. The truck had A automatic in it, When it was empty I would mash down on the pedal And it would light them up And do long burn outs down the warehouse. Can't imagin how strong that 3408 it. Cat motors Are the best.
That is one of the coolest trucks I have ever seen.
Sexier than any woman I've ever seen lol
Me too, and I've seen a few
Agreed
There’s so many things I adore about this rig, but the Kat v8 is just stunning!! Beautiful truck!
This video never gets old. ☺️
Lawd jesus if that isn't the prettiest looking KW I've seen in a while. I mean everything about that truck is a perfect fit as well as one of the best classics out there. And couldnt have topped it off any better with putting that 3408 under the hood of it. Just perfect!!!
Yessir! It's done just right, not too much nor too little and everything is exactly where it oughta be.
Best truck I've ever seen. Nothing extra, everything is neat, elegant and beautiful. I can not see enough. It is perfect! Super!
I love the diesels that clatter like that. It's a sound I associate with my love of them.
Beautiful truck! So clean and such a luxurious cab! I have a soft spot for big CAT engines. Sounds great and seems to accelerate pretty well!
Boy that one don't like the cold. I can smell the diesel form here, always loved the smell of diesel
Thank you for showing the truck driving. Brings back memories. Back in the day I had a Ford cl9000 with a hot big can 3 in it. I miss the coal on every shift.
that turbo whistle music to my ears :D
I love the 3408, and 1693 Cat. The KTA600,525 and 475TT Cummins . I have run or owned all but the KTA 600. The good Ol days!
Steve Mo the KTA 600 was a beast and super reliable motor. I was lucky enough to drive one for a short while. Mechanical motors were great
I run a 1MM 600 Cat c15 block c16 head longer stroke high compression the 8ne Cat built to kick the KTE 600 and it will.
Tim Scott The 6 head monster. Love the Cats but later days a signature 600 would run over a 625 cat
I have too. The KTA 600 was a good engine, but others and I found out about the KTTA 600 and ran them as they were the king of the engines back in the late '70s and early '80s with 1200 hp. If you paid attention you could get 6 miles or a little more to the gallon out of them. You had to run either the 6x4 or 6x5 with them as the 15 speed lower gear bearings would not hold up to those engines.
@@randyrudder2451 Hay randy you are dreaminggggg..
I watched this one several times. This truck is bad ass.
That's the kind of truck that made me want to be a truck driver when I was a boy back in the 70s
Greg P. I had the same experience growing up in the late 90s in Colombia
Greg P. that is a completely true statement for me as well. Pure cool in every aspect.
Yeah a real truck not a show pony ! Only thing I would change would be the bumper. Would much rather it have the classic Gull Wing on it but other than that she is a beauty.
What happened in the 80’s? Did you get sex change operation to be a girl? That’s weird
@@shortthrow50 I knew I wanted to drive a truck when I was a kid and when I became a adult I did. Im still a trucker 30 years later.
Love the Clatterpuller sound ! thanks for the memories !
I love it, nice chat with the owner too!
gotta love the way and CAT A-motor starts up really nice
First Cat I drove was in the 80's a KW w/380 first start I thought this things is worn out junk, but when she warmed that thing would outpull any 400 cummins any day. Loved the way on a hill it would seem to fall on it's face, but hold on here came that breath and whisper that made it come alive and start pulling, back then passed a lot on that grade in Needles.
Those really do have an amazing sound to them! I swear I've seen that guy on a few episodes of Shipping Wars too.
beautiful truck. the ride along footage was great!
LOVE the old 3408's, we had one new in a logging truck in 1980.... nothing outpulled it, we pulled up to 175,000 lb on 5 axles on a restricted route permit, it burnt fuel but you were grinning the whole time, had a couple of 8V92's too... they burned just as much fuel and couldn't pull themselves off a stump, don't think I ever chained up running the 3408, just keep backing out of the throttle when it started to wipe it's feet, could almost count the pistons firing and it just kept on going
Yeah I'd take CAT over Derot any day.
A friend had one they hauled potatoes the 2 guys that ran with him 1 had a 425 Cat the other 400 Cummins Eric would gross 20 to 30,000 heavier and just walk away on hills liked it's fuel but had plenty of power to show for it
Man those 8v92s were some kick butt engines
8V92's were a decent Detroit, at least less oil leakage than the 71 series engines, though in my truck technician days (1978-1983), NOTHING out pulled the Cat 3406's or 08's with the same hp ratings, they always had more torque, especially against the 2stroke Detroits. Only time I ever saw a Detroit come close was an 8V92 who's owner had installed 10mm injectors.
What a beauty that truck is and the sound of that 3408 MERCY!
AWESOME I could listen to that truck run all day
Never late with a 3408 😂
Never late V8... never fix straight 6... hard to miss either way
@@kevinrice4909 no it's straight six, you like dicks
what a beautifull oldschool machine. love the sound :)
Used to drive one of those KW's back in the late 70's but with a 5 & 4 speed. Called it the road grader! No other truck could touch a 3408 esp. when pulling hills out west. We had 2 new COE Pete's fitted with V12-71's at the factory but I'd take the 3408 ANY day!
MTH DCS you never drive a turbo 12v then with the governor set at 2400..... would make a cat look like it's standing still
LOL, guess he never run up against a kta 600! No comparison!
A 3406 that has been run threw the doctors office will run with the “never late V8”.
That's a pc motor. The di starts easy and has more power.
I got goose bumps listening to that Cat....Awesome thanks Chris
He ain't the only one gettin a woodie, everytime I hear that distinct CAT starter sound I can't walk around!
love that smoke on start up and when he got on. very niCe sound
Really nice truck I love the old trucks. I been in trucking my whole life and I am a truck driver myself. I love the smell of burning Diesel and seeing the black smoke.
Exactly like mine. Mines got straights, it’s longer; and has a classy old school stripe down the sides and goes around sleeper. Fantastic truck
gave me chills hear that ol Claterpillar fire up classic iron for sure n the ol sayin Never late 3408! Clean ol KW!
Great looking rig. Love the round twin headlights.
now one player with this beast!! take care of this king of the road cheers from Norway
That truck sounds amazing with that motor in it.
I used to run a boat with twin 3408's and he isng kidding you can hear one from a mile away and know what it is if its quiet out. They were also a bear to start up after winter storage but we used to use wd-40 to get em going right off the 2nd turn of the key.............I really miss that boat,it caught a lot of fish and smoked out a lot of mosquitoes lol
That’s lovely 😊 engine sound and it’s so amazingly clean !! 👍🏻 👌🏻
That is absolutely awesome , That is music from back in the day!
Wish I hadn't watched this right before going to bed. I'm gonna have trouble going to sleep now! Such a beautiful tractor 😭
I like how the gauges are setup on the dash. I prefer the Old School dials over digital readouts. I trained on an old 1969 Pete in driving school. We had a KW too but it was just for the oval track as it was a COE and we just ran conventional on the roads.
Awesome!! Homesick for the good ol’ days!!
Oh baby! Such a sweet sound!! And such a beauty to behold! Yep, I’m an old romantic driver, longing to relive the days when trucks needed care and attention and skill to be driven. Never get bored of driving that beauty !!
This guy runs quite the outfit, I had the pleasure of selling off one of my harleys to his driver. He showed up with a w900 with a 110 inch sleeper and we strapped it down on a 2x10 behind the bunk very cool guys
Love the V8 sound....beautiful truck...
What a beauty! Cheers from Australia. (Always a Kenworth man first a mack man second and a peter 3rd.)
When welding on the radiator top tank of a similar truck I asked the owner operator how he liked the 3408. “Well the dealer told me I wouldn’t like it at first. But now with 75000 miles on it, it is about broken in and now I love it.”
One of the best trucks I've ever seen!
Beautiful! brings back memories!
Fantastic I’m gonna make that cold start my new ring tone ... no jakes though ... sniff
Perfect not overdone very tasteful my favorite truck of all time is sonny pruetts movin on kenworth that two tone green is amazing
Damn! That thing sounds incredible!
This is the video you show your kid when they ask you what the word "pimpn" means 👀
Hi guys I drove a kW 144here in Aussie with a3408 20speed spicer 4 speed spicer jokey 68000 dual speed eat ons 450 at the wheels rated at 240 tons we often pulled 8 lines behind her with fully rigged d11ns fuel 2liters a Kay somewhere about a gallon per 2 mile thanks Ray
Amazing. And what an accomplishment to be able to pick and choose what truck you take out of the garage
What a beauty!! Love Kenworths
Como a gente fala aqui no Brasil, Nave maravilhosa esse caminhão, o motor Caterpillar tem muita força, lindo de mais, realmente vocês sabem curtir o que é bom, amo os USA, um dia vou morar aí.
Beautiful looking Rig! Hands down one sweet rig!
Chris your truck is fantastic, looks and sounds great, looks great rolling along too
Nice Ride . Not sure about the dozers but The 3408 Cat was used in a 988B Cat Wheel Loader . Pit in Memphis Has a 988B Cat w/ the same engine . That loader is about as old as i am or few years younger. & Loads , Ag lime, Limestone rock & Rip Rap still to this day . It's also where i 1st found out about the 3408 Cat . Loved to hear that Ole Loader Work those Stock Piles loading trucks .
D9R ran the 3408.
the music of my people. I could listen to that on a loop for hours
Kool truck :
I got to drive an old Ford with a 3208 for a couple rounds, on an occasion or two. I can only imagine how great a 3408 must feel under you. Damn cool rig.
Awesome video driver. I'm from Stockton, California. The birthplace of the CAT Company. They're legendary around here. Peterbilt also has deep roots here too. They had their 75th Anniversary show here at our fairgrounds back in 2014.
I love them ol cats
Wow! Sweet truck! Kenworth is the best running and looking semi truck in the world!
18 liters of pure freedom!
That sound is just flat out beautiful
We'll this is one old timer that knows that old sound. O yes, remember those old light up rocker switches. With that truck, you get the best of both worlds D8 and a truck!

Man I miss the open road I enjoyed driving Petes and Kenworths and other rigs ...........
your not missing much now brother, the good ol'days are dead and gone.
Beautiful machine. Not a few years later owning and running trucks wasn't quite the same. Oh well glad guys like Sundance keep thease alive.
That is pure Oldschool especially with that sleeper that's why it's so much attractive I love it!
Awesome truck. I think the 3408, E9 Mack, and KTA 600 are the three coolest truck engines ever built.
Allis-Chalmers Big Al 450hp was pretty trick too.
I think the Buzz' Dozen V12 Detroit is a great engine though
These were new when I was a ASE certified diesel/truck tech in the late '70s early '80s; they were the gold standard engine option to have. That distinct high pitched rattle would set all the driver's and tech's hearts aflutter. They usually dominated the truck drag races here in South Jersey, with the exception of an occasional V-12 Detroit . Remember a long nose Pete with a 3408 doing burnouts, then turn a 10.1 sec quarter-mile....nuts
@@TuffBurnOutTeam I take it you never ran with an E9 Mack setup right or an Allis-Chalmers 725. Have run the engines listed by farmerallis and can say they all were very good engines that setup right would do the job. I've even run a KTTA 600 I had in an 80 ext/hood Pete with a 6x4 that put out over 800 hp. But to say KTA would kill them all is not correct. Been there did that back in the day. You can have a big engine, but the trans, gears, and driver make the truck.
The E9 bottom ends Would fuck out on them all the time pulling road trains i have had them many blokes in Australia would Back me up to what im saying thats why they all use K.Ts in Australia and there still using them over here still but we have replaced them now With newer tipe of QSK 19
Vi muchas veces este video solo para escuchar el sonido de motor ese sonido me trae recuerdos. Cuando los buses blue bird le ponían esos motores yo maneje un 3208 turbo en el Salvador
I worked on lots of 3408’s and many fuel systems over my 42 years at Ohio Machinery-Ohio cat. They were a powerful engine!
Which cat engine was the most reliable for semi trucks? Which cat engine had the most horsepower? Would you say any other truck engine manufacturer made a engine that was as reliable as cats best....or had.... Just as good fuel mileage with high horsepower???;
Funny how there so special in the U.S.
I am from the the Netherlands and i work as a Cat mechanic on ships. The 3408 is a very nice engine and very easy to work on.
That Cat sounds really like it should. Love a Cat engine. 🥰They like to get up and roll. 😎
thats a beaut of a truck. itll definitely out pull and out run and out last any of these new trucks on the road today. Wish i had my grandpas 74 w900 with a 3406 "B" model, id run it to this day of we still had it.
YOU obviously have not driven a modern big power motor. That motor did not last either.
This guy's got a woody right now just looking at it love it
Such a nice clean rig🤠 awesome sound😎
beautiful W900 thanks for keeping it from rotting in some yard or field.
3408 CAT...Mega amounts of TORQUE for sure...back in the day.
“This guy, he’s got a woody right now” 🤣
God this thing sounds and is so beautiful I love the black with chrome very elegant combination 👏🔥👌
Yeah i popped a chubby my damn self! Diesel pump'n fuh sho. I love my 1996 3406e but those V8 Cats are awesome!
you know who else would get a woody the state of California with all that smoke they would see dollar signs lol
its not bad once u run thru the gears.....lol
Juan Garcia ca would see and hear that coming hundreds of miles away and throw up the do not enter sign. Fuck California!
This truck is amazing man...congratulations..Alex from Milan..italy
Nice rig sounds great love it when it rolls coal
Excelente Máquina 🇧🇷
Off topic, the reason I deleted my truck, longevity, performance, engine health, and good ol’ smell of Diesel engine.
