    When headed up Monteagle, at 60 mph, everyone we passed made a comment on the CB that it must be nice running empty up the hill. We pulled over at the break check area and opened our trailer doors to prove we were not empty! This was 1975/76-ish.

The rest of us tried picking up the slack. Glad I'm out now. It'll NEVER be what it was. This truck is stunning, especially for all the love put into it. And 6 mph?!! Wow!! But running like he did? My dad passed away in 1976, he drove for Interstate for 27 years and all I wanted to be was a truck driver. In 1980, a neighbor bought a brand new bright white 359 specifically with a Cat engine like this one; minus all the stainless and full fenders on the rear wheels, but still tastefully dressed. He specifically ordered the Cat because he hauled sand, rock, etc out of quarries; similar to this one hauling coal out of Kentucky... This video brought back some amazing memories!

    Sounds like a great guy to have a conversation with. Interesting that it doesn’t have a Brakesaver, that’s the first thing I noticed. I wonder how many Petes or KWs had the 3408 in North America. Over here in Australia the Kenworth factory made 31 with the 3408 but we don’t get Peterbilt unless they are imported. Most of our 3408s in Australia were Ingersall Rand air start and most had the Brakesaver. Like he said, you can get good fuel mileage but you’ve got to know how to drive them properly. They are an O/O truck. There’s still a few working every day in Australia, not just show trucks.

    • @matthewkabanuk443
      @matthewkabanuk443 Před měsícem +6

      Here in the US, Caterpillar marketed and registered the 3408 with the EPA under "automotive" use (over-the-road) for model years 1976-1985. There were a sizable amount of Kenworth W900As, K100s, Peterbilt 359s, 352Hs, and a couple 362s with 3408s. A good guy by the name of Cam Lavin (quite prevalent on the American Trucking Historical Society (ATHS) facebook group has dug through tons of build records and the latest Peterbilt with a factory 3408 he's come across was a 359 with a build date of May 28, 1985; roughly 10-11 months into the model year. It's extremely unlikely that Mr. Harry's truck came factory with a 3408. It must have been a glider kit as the Custom Build dash plate was only a thing on those. You could apparently order a 503 hp 3408B over-the-counter from Cat for 1986 and possibly 1987, but there's no evidence here to differentiate if Mr. Harry's is the typical 450 hp 3408 DITA or a B model. Now, all this doesn't detract from the fact that finding a good running 3408 these days (especially one this clean) is a massive treat.

It’s had three sets of heads and liner packs and a couple of water pumps and compressors and injectors and elements. The secret is to give it a bearing roll around every 6,000 hours, and change out the turbo at around 14,000 hours.
      No one ever mentions the real problem, which is that the compressor can fall of the rear alloy housing unless you fabricate an external bracket, and the alternator bracket will break unless you reinforce it. I did a bearing roll before Christmas and the crank was well within spec, end float was 0.014” and it never seems to change.

    Years ago there was a truck pull up in bath ny and on the way there we passed a dump bucket with a pete dragging it. He was pulling the hill out of Hammondsport and he was barking pretty good. Turns out he pulled in the fair. He had a 3408 under the hood. When he dropped the bucket they used a railroad tie to keep it from sinking into the ground. So he was loaded. Another truck that showed up was a heavy haul out of NY. They specially made that truck to pull heavy loads. That one had the 3412 in it. But the pete with the 3408 won it. He knew how to get the power to the ground. But they are rare, so it's nice to see this guy with his one of a kind original still on the road.

Drove 5+4s, even drove a 4300 Int with a 400 cummins with a 12513 with a 4 sp aux and 2 speed rears in it. Back in April 1985 My Dad placed an order for 50 359's, of which 4 were powered with 3408 Cats and coupled with Spicer SST 6/1241 Transmissions. The other 36 were 3406B Cats with the Same Transmissions. Today 36 are still run Dedicated Turns, with over 5.5 Million miles on them. You maintain them right. They will last a long time.

How do I wished there was still drivers as him out here what a better time it’d be than what we have now.
