Should I memorize FAR numbers or just the memory aid acronym?

I was in this exact situation last week doing a preflight on a flight school archer 2 and the starboard nav light didn’t work. Even with tomato flames memorized, guess what... I looked it up.

This is a good point. I've been preparing for my Instrument check ride. How do the DPE's look at this topic? I guess it depends on the DPE, but they probably don't want you fumbling around too much with your FAR/AIM.
