It's okay to tell ATC slow down, you are talking too fast

  • I talked to a real air traffic controller, RH from the podcast Opposing Bases, and he tells me it's okay to tell ATC to speak slower! Fast-talking air traffic controllers can be a real problem when it comes to flying safety in both general aviation and commercial aviation. I was a bit surprised by this but it really shouldn't come as a shock. Usually, professionals have a thicker skin about their trade than most of us realize.

I´m a controller and part time commercial pilot, but English is not my mother tongue. I get along very well pretty much everywhere, but when I went to OGG on Maui a few years back the controller spoke so fast that I just didn´t get what he wanted. He didn´t slow down after my second "Say again" and got annoyed with me. I finally told him that if he didn´t slow down we´ll be doing this all day long. It certainly helped being a controller myself, I don´t get intimidated. If you´re a little shy this controller behaviour can lead to safety issues.

I once had a controller "mock" me when I asked him to slow down. I found that intimidating as a pilot with less than 150 hours. This controller was NOT very professional. I was under the assumption that they are there to serve the pilots and help us. Someone in charge of these people needs to explain that our lives often depend on their service. Flying can be stressful enough without controller fast talk or mumbling! On the other hand, I have had some wonderful controllers who communicated very clearly and were most helpful to a relatively inexperienced pilot. Thanks for this post. It give me hope!

That is one of the reasons why I'm taking Sport Pilot training and stopped my Private Pilot training. I would rather talk to other pilots and let them know what I'm doing. And would prefer to land at one of the 20,000 non towered airports throughout the USA, opposed to the 500 towered airports.

I had this problem as a low time, newly-minted instrument pilot. Called up clearance delivery at a busy class D airport under Detroit’s class B airspace. I did not get “as filed” and the controller’s instructions were spoken so fast, and the departure had so many waypoints, that I asked him to repeat it four times. Each time he delivered it as fast or faster. I don’t know why he didn’t give me a standard DP, but I was visiting and not familiar with the waypoints. I couldn’t understand him, much less copy them. I was hoping my multiple requests to repeat the clearance would give the guy a clue, but he just kept machine gunning me. I’ve always wanted to ask a controller how I should have handled that situation, so this was a very helpful interview for me.

Really enjoyed this finer point. Also, like your intro music. Where did you find it?

Wow I'm the first to comment . I think this was a very good discussion to have . I'm not a pilot but it's always been a dream of mine and to be very honest talking to atc is one of most intimating things to me . Thank you for this video and all your content your an awesome flight instructor and I would love to get some flight time with you . Hope you take care and as always fly your best .
