    Interesting topic. I’ve heard rumor of a DPE that would almost always fail on a very simple procedure in order to charge full price for a very short second test.

      I had to retest because I was in a crab on final and the DPE *insisted* I land in a slip. My CFI took an hour to stop screaming afterward. One flight around the pattern, a signoff, and of course more money, and five minutes later I'd passed. Go figure.

    haha, no quota, except that's pretty much a quota. Sounds necessary to look at a high pass rate for a DPE, but I can't help but think it might encourage them to fail someone if they're getting close to that 90% pass rate. Fingers crossed the vast majority of DPEs are honest people, I'd guess most have the appropriate integrity.

    90% pass rate and high or low accident rate doesn’t matter. FAA doesn’t want to see examiners give that certificates away. I had an instructor who told me the they wouldnt even pass with those complex questions I had to answer. This dude was over kill. Every maneuver perfectly in standards with perfect instructional communication. If one of those weren’t adequate he’d end the checkride with a NOD.
    There are some examiners who want to help flight schools prepare their candidates for success. The problem occurs when they bring in an examiner who has no relationship with the school.

      When you demonstrate a maneuver you must be able to point out all of the reference points, attitudes airspeeds and altitudes in ground ref maneuvers. Sometimes be able to identify errors during evaluation. Now that’s teaching! It’s takes experience to hone those skills. Who can learn how to do all that in 2-3 weeks?

    If a DPE had a higher than normal fail rate- that would reveal a trend. That would mean the DPE would be under scrutiny as biased.
    Data analysis of a DPE pass/fail rate involves more factors that the DPE evaluation. If the examiner had a high fail rate of a individual instructors students then that would suggest the instructor could be the issue. The same data analysis would be applied against a flight school as well.
    In the long run it would be counterproductive for a DPE to act in an unethical manner. The aviation world is very small and usually regionally concentrated.

    A DPE that has a reputation for failing a lot of students is objectively verified. If the conversations among instructors state they are concerned the DPE is being unjustly hard and doing so to generate revenue it would effectively create a situation where no one calls that DPE.
    In the long run the DPE would lose revenue. An investigation by the FAA that would suggest the DPS acting unethical would end up with his DPE getting revoked.
