- GET READY FOR A LONG ONE! THIS VIDEO IS A DETAILED ASSMBLY OF THE 2009 F750 AIR RIDE SWAP PROJECT. I SHOULD REALLY RENAME THIS PROJECT BECAUSE IT IS SO MUCH MORE THAN JUST SWAPPING IN AND AIR RIDE REAR SUSPENSION. I WANT THIS TRUCK TO BE MECHANICALLY READY TO GO TO WORK WHEN I AM DONE. I GO THROUGH THE ENTIRE AXLE INSTALL AS WELL AS THE COMPLETE AIR BRAKE ASSEMBLY. I HAVE A BIG PLAN FOR THIS TRUCK. HOPEFULLY NO ONE WANTS TO BUY IT BEFORE I GET HER COMPLETED! HOPE YOU ENJOY!
WANT TO SHARE YOUR PROJECTS? EMAIL ME PICTURES ALONG WITH A BRIEF DESCRIPTION AND I WILL ADD IT TO THE END OF MY VIDEOS!

Your a life saver, buying a auction 6000 dump and wanted to learn about the air brake issue before buying. This is all I need to learn one video!
You'd make one helluva shop teacher, even I'd learn something. Thanks for sharing the knowledge teach.
I will send in some pics of my slow progress on retrofitting a GMC highway coach air ride suspension onto a 1972 fire truck which has a Cummins NTF small cam in it. Thank you for taking the time to show procedures and parts in this current build. It really helps.
Hi JC please forgive me. I was laughing when you were sitting as you were fitting the hub. I looked at your shoes I said to myself if someone didn’t know you they would hand you a few dollars thinking you were homeless and then I saw the new boots. Your not a man to waste anything. I like that. Kindest regards from Ireland and I love your channel I love the way you and your good wife are so United and I love the standard of your work. Belt and braces. God bless.
Thanks for sharing your talent and knowledge i found your channel because of Jonathan w. A great recommendation. I don't think ill ever work on a big truck but knowledge is power
Thank you for another interesting video, alway's learn new stuff here, greetings from belgium
Happy Thanksgiving Mr and Mrs J.C Smith and family
Nice video! Enjoyed watching it on Thanksgiving morning with my coffee.
Years ago, When I signed up for military, my MOS was to be a heavy diesel mechanic. I was so excited! Half way thru Basic the Commander told about half of us that our career choices were closed and we could get out, be a cook or a cop? I was heart broken...I love watching and learning from you J C, Thank you so much. Happy Thanksgiving!
I was trained at Fort Belvoir as a power generator mechanic,52B30 in 1977. About 1979 they merged it with 63B10 wheeled vehicle mechanic . I always wore my castle no flaming ball for me.

Hello; J.C. Great video. One thing I do is to take the axle cones, put them on the end of a screwdriver and wire wheel them to remove until they are clean from rust etc.. Them never seize them when installing them into the axle. Many times I had a hard time removing those that were rusted in. Also I put white lithium grease on the bearings on install as a primary lube. Stemco seal installers can be expensive if you a lot of different axles sizes, and brands. Your video was long but it was also involved which made it worth watching. Thank you.
i wire wheel the cones as well. i put never seize on the axle in the cone holes as well. i cut some of the less important parts out since the video was over an hour long already.
Thanks for the air brake explanation. I have 3 different types DD3, Spring brake and old school air applied with a Johnson Bar drive shaft drum parking brake. Our old Greyhound buses are quite the challenge but I'm not telling you anything new. Keep up the awesome work!!!!
This man defines to word mentor. I have none of the resources to physically build and rebuild equipment and vehicles. But this man can give me decades of knowledge as I sit reading and learning from him
Always learn valuable stuff watching your vids, JC! Man, I paid a shop $850 to put new studs in the front of my 4700 so I could use aluminum wheels...thinking I needed the stud installer tool.... wish I would have known about your way lol. Great vids!!
That’s a cool idea for the pictures! I’m going to send you some of my Sterling
Great informative video JC I don't know a whole lot about diesel so it's always fun to learn
JC well done I have not done a semi brake job in over twenty years I wish I had a dollar for everyone I have done. Happy Thanksgiving I let a Commerical run on the videos for the give back fund I put your videos on at night when I go to bed to add to the fund thank you for what you do God Bless stay safe
Enjoyed it much...
Although I am woefully late to watching this series...
Great video series, thank you sir.
I watched the whole thing in two or three settings just because I fell asleep but not because it was boring ,because I was stuffed with turkey thanks JC happy Thanksgiving
one meal on thanksgiving is all i can take!
Other than some of the schools I have participated with, this is the best demonstration of brake adjustment I have seen.
Hope you and your family are having a happy and safe Thanksgiving.
Thanks for sharing.
Nearly 20 years ago, I used to sell those brake parts. I'm not a mechanic, never installed them before, so seeing how everything goes together was very interesting to me. After watching the attention to detail put in, I would have no qualms buying a truck you've repaired and put up for sale.
Man a guy has this on the big screen, so I will get my comment in early. Work rate, knowlage and attention to detail is mighty impressive as is your willingness to help good folks out. Sadly a dying quality nowadays, happy holidays 💪☺️🏴🇺🇲
Happy thanksgiving, I think you have a good mix of explanation and doing which makes this stuff easy and interesting to watch. Good luck.
One of the quickest hours on you tube i have spent. Great video. I hope you are planning to keep this one for all the new parts you have used.
That looked like a little quick release valve, I think it's called on the frame you replaced. Some of the new ones are plastic I've seen.
Another thourough repair job, Sir.
Just found your channel...man your attention to detail is outstanding...and you seem like a great guy.... please keep putting out the outstanding content...keep on keeping on
Good grief ! What an excellent info packed video thanks J.C.
thank you for great detail video as very detail layout watching them all time
I throughly enjoyed that one JC and especially when you oiled up the washers. Great tips and not too old to learn more tricks. Cheers Steve 👍👍👍
thank you for being thorough and showing the 100% correct way of doing things
Awesome video, this will be a big help for me when I get to work on the freightliner
this will be a walk in the park for you.
Appreciate the details in the videos
Excellent education.
Thank you
👍👍 looking good. Thanks for sharing. Stay safe and healthy 🇬🇧
Great work as always J.C. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.
Happy Thanksgiving to J.C. and his pretty lady!
Wow 🤩 very informative didn’t know all that went into just one side but did an amazing job
That air bushing driver comes in handy I'm sure :) Great video J.C!
it was inexpensive as well.
Thanks for another very educational / informative video.
I did my wheel studs on my wrecker like that too. I stripped the threads on one stud though. I bet this truck is gonna be a wrecker. Or at least I hope it is.
I always greased the bushings and cams before installing the cams and spin them several turns before installing the slack adjusters because greasing through the fitting doesn't get grease all the way around the cam bushings and I've seen the cams rust and lock into the bushings. I used anti seize on the axle studs and wedges because I might be the next person who had to remove the axle and they are much easier to remove. I used anti seize in the splines of the brake cams and slack adjusters so they can be removed easily. I also used it on the brake chamber mounting bolts, yokes and pins for the same reason.
if you see the in the video i greased the ends of the s cam tube and put grease in at the fitting before i put the cam in. i failed to neversieze the cam splines before i put the slack adjuster in place on camera. took it back apart and added it.
She is looking good, this has been interesting and informative. Being a fellow tool nut I look forward to seeing the angle wrenches when you get them
Happy turkey day J.C and family awesome video today
good way to spend my Sunday!
Huge kudos to Mrs. Smith for freezing with you.
Happy Thanksgiving. Another nice job my friend.keep them coming. I don't watch t.v. anymore
A lot of good footage in this video. Angle head wrenches and short stubby service wrenches are both nice. I have sae and metric ones. For the price the klutch brand from northern tool work well
Fantastic explanation have learnt a lot many thanks 🇦🇺👍
Thanks for the lesson. And happy Thanksgiving.
I really enjoy your video s looking forward to the next one 😀👍
JC it's nice to see a quality craftsman doing some great work explaining as you go like I said before your the Jonathan W of trucks
Awesome job I really enjoyed this video and I love how you pay special attention to details on reassembly You and the Mrs have a Happy Thanksgiving
Nicely done. Thank you. Very valuable info.
I learned a ton from this video. I want to buy a dump truck some day so I’m sure I’ll be able to put all my new knowledge to good use some day. Thanks for the great video JC
Always enjoy your videos you do great work and have to get a good return on your trucks as you make it a point to replace what’s needed. Tom
tom, this truck is getting more than my average truck repair. few go this deep. however, if it needs replaced to be make a truck safe and reliable....well, i guess it just has to be replaced. a few hundred extra sure id better than sitting along side the road waiting for the tow truck at $150. per hour.
Great video as always thanks for taking the time to show us looking forward to the next one you keep safe and your wife Michael UK
Happy Thanksgiving Jc and Mrs.Jc from my house to yours! GOD Bless!
Lq4 truck Ford transfer news Mars truck you should do a tow truck to turquoise cars I'll see you a whole or half option you working very hard on your truck on your trucks
Back in the old days when I was lining Truck and trailer brakes, I would set on the top shoe, hook the bottom shoe on the anchor, hook the small springs, flip the bottom shoe into position, hook the big spring on the pins, push down on the bottom shoe, put in bottom roller and then use a bar to raise up the top shoe and put in the roller. The only tool required was bar.
You and Mrs JC have a great Thanksgiving from KY
Hey jc love the content that bar your using to line the holes up are called sleever bars
Mate, you never seem to stop. Another educating video, thank you. Merry Christmas to all.
Nice to see american people still working,
Hi mr &mrs Jc, I’ve done many of these so I’m lucky in that respect even though on busses still the same but I still enjoyed it, yes I miss it not I’m retired due to ill health but I did love getting my hands dirty. At the end I did see the no gasket and you could hear the two metal parts hitting, yes I’ve done things like that myself so your not alone anyway keep up the great work both of you, markUK
I am a relative newcomer to your channel. I've seen perhaps a quarter to a third of your videos. This most recent video is hands down the best I've seen so far. The content and attention to detail is top notch and I love the idea of seeing other peoples projects. I've been meaning to ask you how you can drive your rollback around with no identification or DOT numbers? Just local back roads? That would never fly here in Michigan. Ever since the local municipalities got the authority to bust on commercial vehicles, in addition to the large trucks, they pull over every pickup truck with a lawnmower in the back asking for a company name and a DOT number. It's ridiculous! You might just be taking your mower to get it serviced and they think you're running a business. It's all about the money.
welcome to the channel! hope you find videos you enjoy. all my equipment is licensed, insured and has the appropriate identification. i dont show it in videos. these videos are for entertainment. they are not to promote my business.
Thanks for the response J.C. While I got you, what is the brand name of the heavy duty red 4 legged jack stands that you have? I too could make them but often times it's easier just buy them.
sunex. bought them through summit racing when they had a sale.
Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family. Stay safe
Happy Thanksgiving sir and I did learn a lot from your videos sir I really appreciate
Happy thanksgiving jc and family
Great video. Happy Thanksgiving. I'm going to email you a few pictures of a truck someone down the street from me built I always thought you would enjoy it.
Mane amazing video as always nothing better than your videos and good food haha Happy Thanksgiving
Happy Thanksgiving JC to you & the Mrs. Love the long video. Jc on those wheel studs I just use a ball joint press. Works great when u can't get an air hammer to it.
hmm. interesting. i have never used my ball joint press for that.
Happy Thanksgiving Jc and Mrs. Jc
Happy holidays to you and your family
Outstanding video brother.
Keep these coming there great
Happy Thanksgiving ..
Great information on the brakes. We tell our guys to make sure cage bolt hole has the plug installed to keep salt out and if its popped, its a good indicator of a diaphragm leaking. ..
Take care 😃👍
Happy Thanksgiving to your family.
Great video
Great video Jc
Very good explanations.
Happy thanksgiving 🦃 JC
Great video, very informative.
Hi JC, at about time 50 minutes into this video you mentioned angled rachet wrenches, I brought a set for my Toyota a few months back I suggest please try before you buy if you can, I wish I had just brought the straight rachet wrenches instead.
You only have 2 sets of complete knuckles on your hands it's best to keep them in good condition.
Tony from Western Australia 🇦🇺
i am looking at "angle head wrenches" not ratcheting. i have a love hate relationship with ratcheting wrenches. i have had several brands and dont love any of them.
@@j.c.smithprojects I thought I was being smart in getting the flexible, angle ratcheting spanners, the quality is there but I find that they are awkward maybe if you have got the nut or bolt released then use the angle ratchet it would be ok.
Are you thinking of the spanners that are sort of arc shaped as apposed to 45 or 90 degree's from the straight?
Tony
Lol...this aught to be good!!!!
Can't wait jc...happy Thanksgiving family
Happy Thanksgiving j.c.
Re: bolts.
Flange bolts and flange nuts.
Actual frame ones are stronger than grade 8 and no messing with washers.
Angle wrenches;
I have a set of MAC up to 1 1/2".
I have Pittsburg from 1 1/2" to 2".
The mac wrenches are kinda short in length.
I think the same set in Snap-On are longer.
The Pittsburg ones are longer. If the fitting is out where I can swing a wrench, I will use the Chicom one over the Mac.
Air leak;
I am surprised the QR-1 valve was the leak. Those push to connect fittings are air leak factories!
Had a Navistar engineer tell a group of us, Navistar started using them to save money on warranty claims for air leaks, and we laughed him out of the room.
Between that, and the MaxFARCE engine, they should be broke and out of business.
understand that i normally use flange bolts and nuts. however, i purchased the majority of the bolts for this project when covid 19 had the country shut down. my normal supplier could not get inventory and i didnt want to mix half and half. we call them push to leak connectors. rust was the cause of the quick release valve leak.
WoW man, You have a lot of knowledge to pass on. Have you ever thought of going to your local high school, and seeing if there are any students interested in your line of work an interested in an apprenticeship , cause while in school I would have jumped at the chance to have been an apprentices + the extra credits ,,; p/s I was board with school and ended up dropping out of school and going to a trade school and becoming a transmission mechanic for 20 years.
i dont have any training. i just figure it out by doing. i just share what i do for others to enjoy as entertainment.
@@j.c.smithprojects
It is entertaining yes BUT it is also highly educational as well. I honestly think that if I had to do this reassembly job I would have my phone handy and follow your video guidance step by step and expect to complete the task correctly with some confidence. Excellent video.
Forgive me if I’m wrong but it looked to me like you put the brake chamber on upside down with the drain hole up. You are a very good teacher
Great video as always
Looks like a good truck for that wrecker bed you bought.
Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family. Yeah those bolt / rivet alignment bars are great right.
Watching this video for the umpteenth time
you must be gearing up for a project kevin?
@@j.c.smithprojects
I want to do the same thing on my Mack and lowboy . I’m also looking at putting a montazuma toolbox 🧰 and pony motor on the lowboy so I can use it with any truck. I also want a wet kit on the Mack. I’m still driving company, buying parts as I can find them and saving for the move to Huntsville Alabama.
Happy Thanksgiving
Gonna send you some pictures of the finished sandblasting rig!
Email sent....BTW that turkey looked good!
Have great and safe Happy Thanksgiving
I usually use a wire brush on a drill
Happy Thanksgiving hope urs was a good one
Love these videos…
Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family, awesome video. I learned a couple of things that you have a better way of doing.
Good job
Happy Thanksgiving
Like watching your videos .
Top video agian .
nice long video
You need a bigger shop for more great builds.
i had a friend of mine that was complaining his brakes sucked after paying a shop to do the steer axle s cams, i took a look at it and they had the new s cams on the wrong side. i don't know how they didn't figure that out when they went to set the brakes up.
how in the would? i have never seen that. i think i would have insisted on a refund. lucky he had you to help him out.
