- FINALLY! I GET SOME TIME TO TRY AND START THE 1987 T600 3406B. THIS TRUCK HAS SAT IN A FIELD FOR OVER 20 YEARS. IT SAT SO LONG THAT A TREE GREW UP THROUGH IT. IN THIS VIDEO I GO THROUGH THE PROCESS OF PREPPING THE ENGINE FOR ITS FIRST START. HOPE YOU ENJOY!

No computers to mess with, nothing like an ole mechanical diesel. Those CATs sounds beautiful.
Amen and reliable!
Especially with wide open exhaust
Full service on it all will be well
I've driven A LOT of engine/transmission combinations that have been put in heavy commercial trucks over the last 40 years and the 3406 mechanical with either a 13 or 18 speed are THE MOST POWERFUL trucks I even had the pleasure to drive. If given the option, I would take a Cat 3406 engine from 1987 over a brand new X15 605 Cummins in a heartbeat, hands down, no question!
i totally agree with all of that. simple is reliable...todays engines are so sensitive. they can have catastrophic failures for the smallest problem
Last year I dropped an 3406-B into my 06 T600,bought the truck new in 07 with the C 15 Acert, ran the thing for 1.5 million miles before it literally BLEW UP,CAT wanted 30 for an exchange reman.Had an old 93 3406-B at the house, so my 85 yo father and myself re-did the old bitch ,plugged it in and I cant be more happier! ...........Got the memories from back in the day!.........Hammer down and keep the shiny side up.
If you want to learn how to properly start diesels that have been sitting a long time JC is the man to learn from.
Great idea to change the fuel filter and not use the nasty old fuel.
thanks eric. that fuel was horrible smelling! im not sure if it was just getting algae build up or if someone added some "concoction" like atf and fuel additive to the tanks. it was bad!
J.C how progress coming on the backhoe good job on your projects enjoy your videos. Hopefully you can rebuild the engine from the bus that thing looks in great shape
what happened to returning to this project been awhile
No DEF, No EGR, No E-logs, what's not to like? It makes sense to put that old truck back on the road. I live in Virginia and I know a guy with a farm out in the Blue Ridge Mountains who pulled an old R model Mack around the same age out of a barn. It's going back to work for next year's harvest. With all the things I mentioned and the price of new trucks today, it makes sense sometimes.
I've got two b models best thing out there
One of the best sounding diesel engines of all time
Can you feel the POWER?!!
Yup. Rivalled only by the Screaming Jimmies!
I have the same exact model but White with polished wheels.
That’s a good primer for how to get a barn find running again. The oil pressure is really good.
JcC got to love key board warriors telling an expert what he should do I watch channels like yours to learn and ask questions
That's cool an old mechanical 4 and a quarta' kitty. That motor is worth it's weight in gold! Oh, and bye pretty mama!
It's always nice to watch someone who knows what they're doing! That was a half-hour worth watching.
what channel are you watching? i want to watch too!
@@j.c.smithprojects - hehehe! Keep up the good work, and all the best from this side of the great watery divide. Dogue.
So refreshing to listen and watch sensible, straightforward content on CZcams. Thanks JC. Respek boss👍
Kenworths with Cats are a match made in Heaven. I drive a t401 with a c12 in Australia. It's got 1.4 million km on it or 870,000 miles without having an in chassis done to it yet, still running great. Mind you that's mostly local work too, don't get to do much highway stuff. Out pulls a lot of the newer Euro stuff too on the hills fully loaded with at least a 100hp deficit. You've got a new subscriber here, I'll be following this project for sure.
Drove a 1981 Cabover Freight Shaker with that engine for a couple years. Good horse. Pulled a Pot, Hay Train, and a belly dump.
One of the Best motors Cat ever built. Out fun the 3406 A. I know first hand. Used to drive a 1984 Frieghliner.. 3406 B. Turned up to a 425. Thst truck would Run & Pull.
Can't wait to see some restoration videos of the anteater
I could never get that darn smell of diesel fuel off my hands either ,gloves are a good idea. Wow she sounds pretty good
This video made my night ! Sounds awesome
I drove over the road long haul trucking for 35 years. I just retired this year man I miss it. My mind says you can still do it but, my body says you better have yourself a seat. After years of waking up in a cold truck & finding out it snow last night got to be no fun not to mention putting snow chains on & off I said to myself I think that I am going to let the young guys & girls have at it. Looks like you found a diamond in the rough. Best of luck to you and the mrs in all that you do. I found your channel about 6 months ago & been a fan ever since. Subscribe of course.
God bless you Sir,WE want you to come on back!
The old girl sounded real good. Can't wait to see what you have in store for her.
I would love to have that truck. 1987 is my birth year!! And I love them old Kenworths!
I love this project man I can't wait to see it up and running again keep us updated thank you 😊
I really enjoy watching you do things intelligently with good knowledge, there are so many less than experienced and intellectual starved experts on CZcams blundering their way through things, keep up the good work.
i fumble around like a monkey with a football at times.
Sounds good, brings back memory's!
3406b one of the best sounding motors ever put between the frame rails of a truck.
Can’t beat an old B model man she runs pretty good to be sitting for a long time definitely worth a rebuild in my opinion
Another treasure for tinkering & fixing at a later date. I guy's gotta have 4 - 5 of those projects going - while ya wait on parts - you can be fixing the other 👍
i always have a good number of projects going at once. keeps life interesting for sure
That's awesome. I love the sound of the older deisels. Especially when they run that well.
Damn that's awesome how it started running so quickly! Still has a job to do and is eager to do it!
Very nice! She sounds good, cant wait for the first run with her.
Oh that's good 1202 ...👌👌✌️👍👍
One of the best sounding engines there is in my opinion , this one is worthy of Some Lovin.👍
Good news J.C.! Sounds great!
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, that old truck runs exceptionally well. A sound investment. Can't wait to see what's planned with it. Thanks for sharing either us. Have a good day
Awesome job, old truck sounds great.
That was a beautiful sound when running. Congratulations on that fine machine. Looking forward to your next video on it. Thanks for sharing. Stay safe and healthy 🇬🇧
love this kind of material. do more!
Great job getting it up and running!👍
That Kenny sounds wonderful JC I can't wait to see her all Spruced up
Tony from Western Australia
I had a 1990 Caterpillar 3406B rated at 475HP no matter the weather conditions that engine used to start in less than half a turn. I just sold it 4 months ago.
Lovely old cat look really nice all cleaned up
Another very good video; thanks!
Great video. I've been driving them more than 40 years but never spent a great deal of time under the hood. I learned a lot.
I'm sure glad we don't have smell of vision thumbs up for the job you're doing thank you
Great video once again, thank you 😊👍
As usual a clear and concise description of this CAT engine, I’m not familiar with this but how good to hear it come back to life after so many years, good oil pressure and sounding smooth. I suppose the fuel and air leaks were to be expected. It’s reassuring to hear your enthusiasm so we can hope to see another video in the near future. Thank you again for brightening my Morning.
Great job J C
Hey, I recognize that die grinder you used on the battery cables! I've still got one from 20-25 years ago when I was a Ford Tech, but she's pretty tired these days. They were $39.95 at the big box stores back then and did the job as well as the $150-200 ones from the tool truck. Probably the best bang for the buck of any air tool I ever bought.
Best explanation of a runaway diesel....Ever....
The old cat sounds good 👍🏼 good work j c and wife bring back the good old days From Bourkey from Newcastle Australia 🇦🇺
Nice job getting it going
What a find. That engine is strong. I hope the cab over is as good when we get to see that one.
Many thanks again JC for this video.. I just sit and watch and still learn about things I may never need, but its the watching and learning that keeps my old brain ticking over and alive still.. Oh the work gloves, its not cissitus its knowing you doing the right thing, even I still wear the black heavy duty gloves If Im working outside on "mucky" things, as I have to service my diesel car over the next few days or so, but nothing so big as your projects, but, the way of life for a 72 year old retired guy.. Well, I wish you and your Mrs well, stay safe, stay happy, a stay making videos for me and 1000`s of others to watch.. Thankyou - Ian - UK... Oh I now got to google to see how a Jake Brake works - lol.
What a good score JC, she'll be a good investment. Love that Cat sound.
Sounds good JC 👍
2 thumbs up four for gore !! Nice job Mr. Smith
Good work man my dad learnt me how to start old equipment a while ago good work jc keep up your Videos 👍
CZcams’s back up and what better way to celebrate than another great JC Smith production! Well done sir! That smooth runnin 4 and a quarter kitty cat is worth at least 10k on its own, you didn’t go wrong buying those 3 trucks even if they end up being part outs, but of course you knew that going in, that’s what makes you the master!
Yeah, I was thinking to call over and ask nicely if JC Projects could head over in the service truck and see about fixing CZcams
every truck i buy has 3 possible fates. #1 fix it and use or sell it how it is, #2 fix it and "create value through repurposing or upfit and #3 take it apart........#3 is usually always the most profitable !
@@j.c.smithprojects , that is why Vanderhaags just bought another truck salvage yard in Columbus Ohio.
Our 8th location.
I work at their Des Moines, Iowa store.
Fabricator.
I've drove coal trucks for thirty years , Cummins , Detroit , macks , cats , the four and a quarter linkeig pump cat is by and far the best coal hauling motor ever built .
Thank you for the videos. 👍
Nice Job J.C.
Do love the sound of those mechanicals. We always try to put rod bearings in them every 200k

Awesome video sir
3406! Music to my ears!!
What I like about this channel is your proffesional and disicplined and have a plan of what to do. The mistakes you make which are few you figure out how to get back on track

Your channel is so inspiring...I own a farm and during the inactive winter months I'm thinking of doing something similar to what you do. You're the perfect place to learn from because not are you knowledgeable, you value safety as well. Thank you for sharing all of your projects.
