8V71 & 8V92 those were my specialty back in the day. I kinda miss the good old day's. Keep up the good work JC 👍
Can you tell by ear the difference between a 71 series and 92 series? Were there any 92 naturals?
92 cubic inches per cylinder? Must've been a real monster!
Detroit diesel, turning fuel into noise since 1939... What a sweet sound!
Lol, come on now, there are a few ponies along with the noise
and no power, screamin going nowhere
318 HP at 2350 RPM.
@@desertbob6835 318 HP? My 2014 Pete 367 had a Cummins ISL that made 550HP and 2050 lb ft with an Eaton 18 speed...AH...the beauties of a fairly large turbocharger...but the Detroit 2 strokes had a sound like no other engine. That Cummins could NEVER sound as good as the Detroits. Still, 318 HP is impressive with no forced induction.
@@desertbob6835 It's confusing, Wikipedia says 304 HP@2100 RPM and 800 lb ft@1600 RPM, but previously it said 318 HP for the NA 8V71...so idk.
I don't know how this man knows so much about so many different trucks, motors, etc. Oh, wait! He is simply a mechanical genius. Very good video.
no no...just a guy messing around with old junk.
Great to see the old beast running so strong. I was amazed to see how clean it was when you removed the valve covers, someone took good care of it. Nice to see Mrs JC is not so camera shy anymore, you folks are a great team. 👍😀
That was pretty cool! It's interesting that the alternator runs off the back of the engine. Looks like maybe the air compressor too. I'd like to see how that works.
They run off the back of the cam shafts. The alternator drive is bolted to the cam shaft gear, then goes through the accessory drive cover which has a lip type seal around the shaft. Then a pulley is mounted on the shaft. The air compressor bolts directly to the other accessory drive opening in the bell housing. Bolted to the back of this cam gear is a female gear type drive coupling. Between this and the compressor is a floating gear coupling, male that goes into the drive coupling on the cam gear, then female gear that goes over the male driven gear on the air copmpressor. Minor revision, it looks like the alternator is actually driven off the blower drive. Same setup as above though.
Detroits are built so either end can be the front or rear and there are gear drives for the camshafts and the blower that can also drive many other things. They can be set up to run either direction too. It is also possible to get them to run in the opposite direction of what they are intended to run so the exhaust comes out of the air filter and the truck moves forward in reverse.
@@tiredoldmechanic1791 Reminds me of a story I read online about a Saab 2stroke whose owner got challenged to a drag race by a muscle car owner. The muscle car owner let the Saab owner specify a few details. The Saab owner wanted the race in reverse. As you can guess, he started the Saab up in reverse rotation and proceeded to motor away from the screaming engined muscle car using all 4 reverse gears!
@@tiredoldmechanic1791 And when they are equipped with oil bath air filters, what a mess when they run backwards!!!!
first AND second !!
J.C you should keep this old girl original. You just don't see them often and you of all people would keep the Detroit alive and well. Awesome video, informative as always. What a beautiful truck.
the engine, transmission, frame, suspension and steering are all up for grabs. they do not suit my needs of this build. i am going to offer the truck for sale as it is before i take it part.
Looks like a good truck that was maintained. Very clean under valve covers. Sounds great. Love the video.
Dang that thing is clean in there I love the sound of a Detroit
always looks like the detroits are clean inside. not sure why, i guess its a two stroke thing
That 2 stroke sounds so good !!
Love the sound of those old two stroke Detroit’s. If my memory can be trusted the 6-71’s we used in the Navy ran about 2500 RPM in our small boats. Great video. Thank you for sharing
A Kenny with a Jimmy, best old diesel combo in the world!! Thank u for posting. Love that sound. Cat, Cummins are fantastic engine's too but that 2 stroke V series is where its at.
Good work, I love seeing old stuff come back to life.
That was good therapy. Thank you Sir.
Thanks for sharing. You two make a great team:) Looking forward to the drive!!
That's music to my ears. She sounds great and I love it.
That Detroit 2 stroke sounds good! Thanks for the video j.c. you're the man!
Ohh Holy Geez that takes me back to when I was young and listening to that sweet music while winding the engine up and down through the gears... Thank you
Damn nice ole KW. Love them Detroit 2-strokes. Great work as always Mr. SMITH.
Nice job , well done to you both. Thanks for sharing. Stay safe and healthy 🇬🇧
Thanks for sharing this video JC, I really enjoyed the content & the music out of that stack !!! 40 years ago I worked as a bus mechanic here in the UK, my job was to maintain air filters every 3 months, fuel filters, changed every 6 months, adjust tappets ( valve clearances ) every 6 months & change injectors annually. I replaced around 500 fuel filters a year on our fleet & the buses ran from around 6.00 am until midnight 7 days a week, I never saw a filter in that condition that you showed, often found some water but not that sludge. Well done Lady, admire her " I can do it " attitude, your a lucky JC TO HAVE A LADY THAT CAN !
Sweet, Love the old DDs
Good video again I love to hear them Detroit engines and thank you for the information about how a Detroit Engine runs be safe
that is one sweet sound ,, it runs beautiful ,, i absolutely love listening to the sound of a 2 stroke detroit ,it doesn't matter how big
That was great. Sounds and runs well for a sitter. When the rack was free and none of the injectors were stuck I knew it was going to be a runner. Good thing you flushed all that gunky fuel out there.
That's a really cool truck! Sounds great too.
Good job sir as always. There’s just something about 2 stroke Deetroits that stirs me. Takes me back to my first summer job operating Terex Euclid earthmovers. Thanks for the post.
Jc you are 1 of the best teacher around, i admire dedication to mechanics .
Brings back memories of my Navy days in the 70’s a lot of small navy craft had these engines. Just a real work horse and they just keep running
Thanks for these videos man, seriously really appreciate the time and effort you take in these. In level 3 for my 310T license here in Ontario and I learn a lot from your videos
im glad you like it. that is what makes the effort worth it.
You two are a wonderful example of good people
I’m jelly.
A very enjoyable video. I believe I learned something from your explanations. Great work!
That blower whine is beautiful, seems like a very healthy unit in general
Fantastic, I love the sound of a 2 stroke v8
Fantastic production, great sound and Mrs. JC ...Perfect video.
Doug@ the "ranch"
thanks doug. this build will be going on for years to come for sure!
Love learning about old diesels jc thanks for video
Definitely learned a lot.
Great video! 👍🏿
JC, l hope you get as much enjoyment of bringing back the old girl to life as l’m watching you do it. Cheers Steve
Many a day I drove a truck like that even same color
The good old days 40 some years ago
Thanks for the memories
Man its a great feeling bringing her back to life when its been sitting for year's
Ain’t nothing like the sound of a 318 Troit to MAKE MY DAY.LOVE me some 2 Cycle Diesel . THANK YOU BOTH for this Wonderful Video!!!!!!!
Gotta love them old Detroits
I love the sound of those deisels. A real workhorse. Keep it simple, no need for all those computers and sensors. Totally unlike automobile deisels.
Man I love those ole two stroke Detroits like the 8v71. They were awesome engines back in the day and in my opinion they are still the best! Thank you for keeping these engines alive and documenting it. I'll look forward to your other videos my man. Tom..............
Very well done.
can,t believe how clean that motor is and it sounds great,
It makes a huge difference when you don’t have an EGR system dumping soot back into the engine.
Detroit pipe music! Reminds me of my mis-spent youth! :)
Nothing like the sound of a Detroit. Love it
SCREAM JIMMY, SCREAMMM!!!
Love these things, my buddy drives an old Seagrave fire truck converted to an equipment hauler for his tree service with one of these. He’s got a garden sprayer hooked up to prime the thing, not how i’d do it but he drives it daily lol
Great old truck with a great old engine, as long as you can keep the fire rings intact, it will haul the mail.I got a lot miles out of them Detroit's.Great video😎🇺🇸
Loved the trk. Sounds great
Great video 👍
That is the cleanest I have ever seen a Detroit on the inside who ever had that really took care of it ,,,looks like it was just rebuilt ,,wow super clean
She sounds grand. Gotta love the sound of a Detroit being exercised...
Where does a man find a woman like that haha. Good stuff man, I appreciate your detailed explanations.
😮Wow thats pretty sweet. She started right up! I'm amazed how clean that exhaust is coming out the stack, especially after sitting for so long. Good thing you got rid of that nasty fuel first. You woulda been chasing injector & fuel problems for days.
It's amazing that none of the fuel injectors were stuck. I've worked on a few that only sat for 6 months and at least one or two stuck.
Great job SIR.
Good old Detroit gotta love them.
Great looking old KW as well.
Why do they say a Detoit leaks oil more than a Cummins or Cat?
Nice job! Reminds me I need to do the fuel filter on my 6v53 Firetruck.
Nice! Job well done.
That sounds beautiful.
Well done video, good information
The fuel return fitting on the back of the cylinder head has a restricted orifice to maintain fuel rail pressure from the transfer pump. Thanks for reliving my day's of old.
It’s nice your wife helps and supports you. Love the range of projects keeps it interesting. Change oil before pouring the onions on.
I have a customer with one of the last few 871's installed as an OEM engine in piece of machinery after they went out of production and the emissions restrictions made them illegal to use. It's been a while, but I think that was back around 1998 / 2000. It's only been back to the shop for repair once since we delivered it. It's always a treat to hear that sound....
U all did great.
She sounds good! Nice clean truck!
I found another channel to watch love it buddy. You sure know your stuff 👍
Good job J.C.!
Nice work !!
Sweet as pie JC & First Lady JC. The motor sounds great.
Damn in love 💪💪💪 that sweet Detroit
Pretty sweet old rig cant wait to see what your plans are for it.
Sounds great.
Have a great day I know you have fun work on a ready motor
Oh the memories that brings back. I must say when you pulled that first valve cover and I seen how clean that engine was I new it was going to start up and sound strong. Good luck with it. Great video.
Outstanding screamin Jimmy!
That sound reminds me of how city busses, garbage trucks, Greyhound's, big wreckers, fire trucks, etc used to sound back when I was a kid. Love it!
I love the taste of diesel in the morning... tastes like... it’s running! Sweet rig!
I cannot believe how clean the motor was inside nice job JC and the lady did one heck of a job cleaning that truck hope to see you driving it soon
you mean a "will it drive video?" hmmmmmm.........
That truck fits you nice Ms Smith.
Love the sound of those old 2 stroke detroit but that's where the love affair ends
I am with you on that! Listened to them for many thousands of hours in the '70s and '80s.
The screaming Jimmy lives up to its name and how sweet that sound is
Jimmie,s a GMC
@@dennisnadler4784 technically we are both correct as Detroit and gmc merged in the late 30s and Detroit then became a division of gmc diesel which went under in the 50s leaving only Detroit as the survivor
Love the sound of a 2 stroke!
I knew it would run as soon as I seen those injectors weren’t stuck. Sounds great too
We run a 4-53 Detroit at work. Used to have two. Add some oil and that thing is always ready to scream. Thanks for the video.
i would like to have a 4-53.
Sounds good!
Isn't it good to see an old engine checked over properly before first start ? Great film ! ;-)
Love that sound
Love the sound of the detroit diesel 2 stroke
Very cool!
love these Detroits….i saw one of these V8’s pulling a D9 up a steep hill in Alberta….screeeeaaamming
That’s 9 kinds of awesome stuff right there.
I never realized how big those Detroit engines were!! sounds good, take care Mr and Mrs JC
8x71 = 568 cubic inches, which would be about 9.5 liters.
71 series.......Each cylinder has a displacement of 70.93 cubes. Multiply that by 8 and you get 567.44 CID which is 9298.6 cc, which rounds off very slightly to 9.3 litres.
Sounds great! It's nice seeing you let it start on its own instead of shooting it full of ether.
Those old two strokes have an awesome sound to them. We had an old 71 or 73 Autocar with the same engine in it with a 13 sp the old truck was worn out. The kids ran it around the house learning to shift it was ran it out of fuel a couple of times we had to pressurize the fuel tank to get it started. Parted it out years ago. Hope the family and all are doing well.
Those Detroits are tuff old motors, sounds good!
God I love that old iron and she sound grate for her age love that sound of that ol 8V71
Man i love the sound of an 8v71 Detroit
Jc. Great vid man! Love that Detroit. Sounds amaz-balls
. Not sure but man that one is a keeper I think.
