Love the sneeze. And saying "gesundheit" is totally appropriate for a sneeze. I am German and it means "wishing good health" to a person who has just sneezed.
I am sure you and Corie are chomping at the bit to get the garden started. I can feel your excitement.
Thanks Tipper!
Thank you Sonja 😀
Agreed. My great grandfather migrated to the US prior to WWI and he told my mom it meant wishing you good health.
we always say, SCAT, when someone sneezes!
Oh my goodness, I haven't heard "gesundheit" in years! Lovely reminder.
So enjoyable to share this time of gardening and Pap's knife story.❤️
my grandmother, who was one of the oldest of 13 children, had a brother who went to war at 18. he was killed within four days of combat. she was closer to him than the other kids at that time - probably because they were closer in age. he played the guitar and sang. after he died they could not find his guitar. about 40 years later, a man who had been a friend of my grandmother's brother ran into my grandmother. they were talking and he told my grandmother that her brother's guitar had been hanging on the wall in his barn for years. he went and got it and gave it to her. she was so excited to have it and play it. I have always thought that was a great story. your knife story reminded me of it!
Thank you for sharing that story!
I miss my Mama every single day!!! I always have questions almost every day that I wish I could ask her!!! I totally understand what you're saying!!! God Bless!!!
That is really sweet and special having Paps pocketknife. It’s the littlest things that means the most. ♥️
Enjoyed watching you ladies garden . thanks for sharing.
Our pleasure!
It was fun to see you replanting your peppers. Thanks Tipper and Corrie. We've always said God bless you if someone sneezed
As always thank you for sharing! And yes you guys are giving me the gardening fever! Trying to set a place up in the basement where I can start things early, last year I felt I did really good in Ohio where I live and got things started in April. I used to use the bottom of store bought egg cartons to start plants got that from my dad. He would always make small hot houses out in the yard with old windows and get things going early. The story about the knife was awesome, my mom passed away recently and I'm going to miss her trying the first tomato out of the garden this year. She's really the reason I got back into gardening. I moved in with her to help take care of her. I remembered how she always liked dad bringing in fresh vegetables from his garden. Thank you again really great watching you and your daughter working together on getting things started and sharing!
I'm so sorry you lost her David! How kind of you to take care of her-I know she really appreciated that! So glad you enjoy our videos 😀
We have done the winter sowing for 2 years. Just put them outside and forget about them. Later in Spring you can open them up during the day and move the top back over when the night is cold.
There's nothing dramatic, exciting or especially interesting about repotting plants, but it's a necessary part of the process. In radio stations the volume controls were called 'pots'. "Pot it up (or down)" meant to turn the volume louder or softer. It's funny to think 'uppotting' the pepper plants.
😀
I just love all of y'all Tipper. I reckon you get tired of hearing me say it, but I do.
I will never get tired of it 😀 Thank you!!
Watch Our Half Acre Farm. She actually planted in bottles and set out in the snow.
Your brother, Steve is a blessing.
I'm almost ashamed of how many blades I carry every day.
Lol
Take care
Corie is so lovely and soft spoken. 😍
I saw on Facebook where someone took the plastic container that a rotisserie chicken is in that is black plastic on the bottom with the clear lid and used that like a mini greenhouse for planting seeds.
That's a great idea 😀
I just love watching your family. It’s my new entertainment instead of watching tv. You are bringing back my gardening instinct. We gave up it up three years ago due to health but I want to try some above ground things. God bless all of you.
So glad you enjoy our videos! Thank you for watching 😀
Oh, I agree with Matt.
Jalapeno is the flavor!
Thank you for all the memories I got from watching. I loved helping my Grandma & Grandpa in their garden, vegs & flowers, strawberry beds, raspberries, currants, rhubarb, so wonderful! I had a garden when the kids were little & loved canning tomatos, green beans. I miss all this. I have my Dads pocket knife & have a collection of knives. I just really like knives, lol. I have the knife that my Dad bought me when we went to Niagra Falls when I was 10 yrs. old, it's very small but really neat. Thank you again, I love your videos.
So glad you enjoy our videos!! Thank you 😀
I'm watching you girls work on the plants in your neck of the woods with a beautiful pink and purple sky in my background up north.💜 Spring is on its way♡🌷🍃
That sounds lovely 😀 Thank you for watching!
About the light! I noticed this yesterday working in my home office. Sitting at my desk that's in front of a west-facing window, I realized I was blinded by the sun around 4pm. My eyeballs! But my heart loves it! I'm ready to get gardening!
I use the homemade greenhouse method with my houseplant propagations and it works wonders. Giving them that extra humidity seems to make them very happy!
One eyed, one horn flying purple people eater! Y'all mentioned this but couldn't quite get the words. Love watching!
Bless you, thank you for all of your videos. I really enjoy them all
Glad you like them! Thank you!
We always grew a fairly large garden. I have seven brothers and one sister so there were enough of us to work the garden lol. We also raised tobacco. We burned off the beds, planted the seeds, and covered it with a thin canvas . One time, dad was shading the canvas with his hand so he could see through to look and see how the little plants were doing. He didn't notice the copperhead that had crawled inside the bed under the canvas. It struck at his hand but got its fangs caught in the canvas .
Goodness that was scary! Thank you for watching 😀
I know what you mean Tipper about how your parents taught you to appreciate a garden and how you wish you could still ask your dad questions. My dad always had a pocket knife on him, and I just mentioned that to someone yesterday…❤️
My father and grandfather in southeast Pennsylvania used milk bottles to start his seeds I surely wish I had access to his knowledge.
It was so nice that your brother gave you your daddy knife.Memories are wonderful to look back at.Have a blessed week end.
Nice memories Tipper have a day love from TEXAS
Ha. Love the knife story. I have some of Daddy s handkerchiefs. He went Home 1995. ❤️
Miss Tipper, you sure keep busy. have a good evening.
Thank you for watching 😀
Every year I learn something new. I don’t do any gardening, anymore. I pass on these tips to my friends and ask them to subscribe to your channel.😊🇨🇦
We appreciate you Gary 😀
God created us, in part, to garden. Cool, huh? Looking forward to seeing all the goodness grow as the season progresses. Blessings!
Thank you Doug 😀
That was a lovely, touching story about your dad’s knife. I hope your all’s gardens do well this year.
All your plants are really coming along nicely! It’s all exciting to see Spring is on its way!
What a neat story about your Dad's knife. Years ago we had a Christmas tree that needed an awful lot of trimming. My garden loppers not only seemed slow, but also clumsy inside the house. The best thing was a large serrated kitchen knife --it really worked great to trim up that tree! You've inspired me to get going with seeds, thank you! -much love from NJ ~Mary & fam
I got a lot of spring fever too and lost all my seedlings Friday night😢 got some starts today and started more seeds❤ love watching you and your baby work In The garden/ greenhouse. Thanks for letting us celebrate Appalachia with you!
Sorry you lost them!! So glad you enjoy our videos-thank you for helping us celebrate Appalachia 😀
Tipper I just love your "let's see what happens" outlook. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you Robin 😀
I like growing sweet banana peppers. They always do well and are very productive. A couple years ago I bought a seed packet of sweet banana peppers instead of buying the seedlings at the nursery. They grew beautifully, first indoors and then in the garden. I had a bumper crop. When I picked the first one to eat it was hot as fire. The seed packet was mislabeled. I found a friend who liked hot peppers and she got my banana pepper crop that year. I’ve also gotten tomato seedlings from the nursery that were mislabeled and turned out to be a different variety than I had intended to buy. Now I start my tomatoes from seed. There are always surprises with gardening. That’s part of the fun.
There is always surprises for sure 😀 Thank you Kathy!
I cut the whole bottom out of milk jugs and just set them over plants that I have planted in the ground. When I set out plants I dig a hole and fill it with a mixture of compost and topsoil. I plant my tomatoes in the bottom of the hole and add dirt as they grow up. They grow roots all along the stem.
Thank you for that tip Papaw 😀
I sooo much needed this.
Thank you Tipper and Corey.
Y'all bring me peace.
Good looking garden on the horizon for sure.
So glad you enjoyed it!
I love learning and hearing your stories. Thank you.
You and Corie got a lot done. I am so excited for warmer weather to start up there so y’all can get the garden started. Can’t wait to see the purple peppers. Hugs from the southeast coast of Florida 😎🦩🌞🦩😎
honestly, green peppers upset my stomach, but the colored ones I can eat just fine!
I’m just amazed at how far along your growing season is already. A bit envious, lol. But not when the heat of your summer comes, I can hardly stand my own summer. 😂. My tomatoes are up but still waiting on the peppers of course. I need to go out and scatter my poppy seeds, but the snow is still too deep. We’ve had a strange winter. We’re in a cold snap for a couple more days. When I took the dog out at 5 am it was 2 degrees, I’m not even letting the chickens out today as it’s only supposed to get up around 11 degrees. I ground some corn for them to help them get through the cold. So far we’ve only had a total of 6 feet of snow, but March can be a stinker so we’ll probably have more. Well, todays a baking and cooking day so I can be in my sewing room tomorrow, y’all have a great day. TeresaSue.
Good evening Tipper and family I enjoyed watching you and Cory be excited about getting ready for gardening. I also thought the story of your dad's pocket knife was so wonderful. I know how it is to miss someone especially when you want to ask them something or you miss hearing them say I Love You Babygirl . I miss my momma so much my dad passed away when I was barely 2 1/2 yrs old do I don't have memories of him like that . Hope you have great success with everything you have planted and with everything you will be planting and I'm looking forward to watching everything you all do . Have a Blessed night 🙏
Thank you Suzie!!
We used to fold newspaper like you do to make pirate hats and set them down over our plants when a late frost was imminent. We had to anchor them down with dirt all the way around to seal them off from the cold and the wind.
What a great tip Papaw 😀
Milk jugs- cut the lid off all the way, make little slits on the bottom of the lid and push the lid down in the dirt inside the bottom of the jug. The tape gets cumbersome when watering, then stops sticking.
I live in North East Tennessee and I see a lot of people do this in their gardens.
To protect small plants in the beds, cut the bottom out of a gallon milk jug with a cap and place a jug over each plant. If we get a really warm day, take the cap off to vent the warm air. Take the jugs off in early June when the plants start outgrowing
Great tip!
Tipper, my family said the same thing. A comment here filled me in on the meaning to her of the sneeze word. Hmm I believe I will stop saying it . 😊 I planted some potatoes in an old bathtub this evening. I saw someone use straw, I used some dead leaves, layered potting soil, laid cut budding potatoes down, covered with soil. As they grow you add soil. I'm experiment ing, and it's not a large amount, but looking forward to seeing what happens. 😊
I bet they do real good Patti 😀 Exciting to be planting
The milk jug way looks interesting. I think I'll plant cucumber and tomato seeds late next month but I hope to find Early Girl tomato plants to buy. I enjoyed your video.
You just said two things I remember from my youth, LOL. When was gesundheit and the other was a reference to the One-Eyed, One-Horned, Flying Purple People Eater song. 🙂
Never heard of using milk jugs that way!! So I learned something new! Great story about ur dad and his knife!
I have always said gesundheit when someone sneezes, I'm English, but my great grandparents were German. So I guess it was something that carried on throw the generations. It's so lovely that you have Paps pocket knife, and it comes with beautiful memories. Your seeds are coming along nicely, as for the chamomile try doing 50/50 compost and sand. I find that works for me. Have a wonderful week 💞
I enjoy watching you and Corey together. It reminds me of doing the same kind of things with my momma, sweet memories! ❤
I drink a mixture of medicinal teas each morning, including calendula. A friend of mine who was an experienced aromatherapist would put calendula in some of her balms and lotions.
I have my cool weather crops and tomatoes started under my indoor light setup. Those will all go out to our little greenhouse in a couple weeks just in time to up-pot my tomatoes. My peppers, some herbs, and some flower will get started the beginning of March.
You all make me want to pack up my family and move south! Here in Indiana we have a smidgen longer to wait to get our plants planted out. All the tender plants will go out to the greenhouse in the morning and brought back indoors at night until our nighttime temps rise a bit!
I love the hoop house!
I watch you guys plant seeds and I think I could do that on my back porch , but I know better,I walk with a walker, I can’t do what they are doing. I won’t even try it, because I don’t want to fall. God bless that you are able to grow your own vegetables. ❤
I find watching others do what is difficult for us as we get older brings a certain joy...almost as if we were doing it ourselves♡
I thought I could have a few plants last summer on my porch. Some plants I used laundry baskets but they were off the porch. It got so I couldn't get off porch to pick them, so I don't think I'll do that this year. I would love to but it's not worth the fall. I enjoy watching you both plant seeds and the family gardening through summer. Hope you have a bountiful season.🌶️🧅🍅🫐🌹🥀🥰🙏✝️
Bless you! I'm glad you enjoy watching our gardening 😀
I use the milk jugs the way that you do, but I also set them on top of the seeds - I use a stick and just dig out a line around the shape of the jug (in this case you cut the bottom out of the jug) in the grow bags for the cold hardy plants, to make what I call mini greenhouses to try and get a head start on the season. I leave the jug lids off to make sure that they don't get too hot because the weather does warm up occasionally and you don't want the seedlings to overheat...
Over the last year or two that I've been watching your videos, you've inspired me to start a garden. We've grown some carrots this fall and winter and have some strawberries, blueberries, and onions in the ground now. I've always felt like I didn't really have any hobbies, but I've found one!
That is wonderful!
Just a little suggestion to remove the seedlings from their cell that I came up with when I up potted my leggy tomatoes and peppers.
I used a plactic spoon to gently lift them out. They held together even when wet.
Worked great for me. Fork would work too.
I enjoyed watching you and Corey work in the greenhouse, and as you started planting in your milk jugs you asked if anyone had ever had luck with it I did something similar last year.
I started a tomato plant really late, so what I did I planted it in a small flower pot has it sprouted and started to grow it was sitting on my front porch it was spindly so what I did I took and cut a two liter pop bottle in half and just sat it over my pot it did work just like a little greenhouse It got very good size I planted it in a larger flower pot and left it all summer I got tomatoes off of it in late fall I will have to try to cut off milk jugs over larger pots I would love to have a greenhouse like yours to working in it is so very easy to get spring fever early with the coming of longer days I look forward to all your Summer videos thanks again for devoting your time to make them
That is great thank you for sharing what you did 😀
Wow a year already! This year is going to be so cool in the garden with Corie there. Yes I was just saying that today, I need to talk to my daddy. He loved to garden. We lost most of our relatives this time of the year when the sap rises. Not sure if it has anything to do with it, but that is what they use to say. I've got my daddy's knives. What treasure's they are. Thanks for sharing Tipper. Go hug Granny for me!
I will give her a hug 😀 Thank you!
I have been doing winter sowing for 3 years now! but have only tried flowers I'm to the point where I purchased clear shoe boxes so I can reuse them year after year for winter sowing.
Love that-thank you for sharing 😀
I am so happy for you, Tipper, that you're already knee-deep in gardening. Looking forward to the next growing season is a great feeling. We're a bit behind, but we plan to plant our first indoor seeds in the coming week. All the best to you for a wonderful growing season!
Thank you Roland! When we have the tease of warm weather like we've had this week it's hard not to want to plant the whole thing 😀
Tipper I know it is something !!! I have had Spring Fever also !!! I hear tell you all will be getting WARMER down south so watch the plants down there !!! We are going to be getting some SNOW again !!! Gesundheit is German for God Bless you in the North of German !!! There is High and Low German !!! I learnt German French Polish Yiddish at the age of 3-4 yrs old !!!
Jo Hubbard, wise county, Va…if you will watch Jessica at the Three Rivers CZcams the third episode back, she explains the milk jug winter sowing.
Green-eyed, one-horn flying purple pepper eater. I was in elementary school when this came out. Lol
Awe that's such a neat story about your Dads knife! May try the milk jug seed starter.too.
My purple bell was absolutely the crispness and best tasting bell I have ever eaten
In the Florida panhandle at the moment, where we bought an old 1900s home..they updated the home slightly in the 1960s, adding a glassed in porch with the old crank style windows. Although they are in perfect working order I wanted them gone asap until I realized the areas is a perfect greenhouse!! Now I am starting seeds and just added a citrus tree, the smell is amazing! Added a swing as well. It’s like a separate living space. The breeze blows in but the screens keep bugs out. We will be in FL till late spring then back to NC to start my garden there. As you can tell I am excited about gardening.. lol.. this old home place is surrounded by massive azaleas that are in full bloom. My fear is that a cold front will come and kill all the spring grow..crossing my fingers. I am in north Florida very close to the Alabama line so we get frost pretty heavy at times. I swear it feels colder here with the gulf breeze than in the blue ridge mountains… it cuts to your bone! Anyways good luck this year.. ps.my peppers didn’t sprouts either. Even planted by the signs.
How wonderful to have that area to use as a greenhouse 😀
I loved hearing about your Daddy's knife. Wonderful story. Enjoyed your video.
I'm getting spring fever watching you work! We had a warm day in southern Indiana the other day and I was out in the garden cleaning up. You could save all those popsicle sticks and use them for plant labels.
You sure have been busy🥰. Great video!
What a sweet story about your "Paps" knife..thank you for sharing.
You all gave me spring fever, I will start growing my seeds indoor in late March . My dad was a gardener and I too wish I could ask or share with him, and after the harvest ask mom about freezing and canning or cooking. However they are with me in spirit. Loved this planting day with you ladies. Thank you.
Strawberry containers from the grocery store work great for staring seedlings in!
Peter Piper picked a peck of picked peppers. If Peter Piper picked a peck of picked peppers, how many peppers did Peter Piper pick? 😂 This brought back memories. Love seeing the closeness of your relationship. My daughter and I are like this and I absolutely am so blessed. Great job on your plant starts ladies!
Definitely put the winter grow jugs outside. Remove the cap from the pour top, and it will likely receive enough moisture. You might check every few weeks by removing the tape and hinging the top. I share the “see what happens,” philosophy. It’s all an experiment and learning process!
Love watching you and Corie. Y’all get as excited about the garden as I do. I’m getting a late start this year. I haven’t started anything yet, but I will. Great story about Pap’s knife. I know what you mean about missing him and wishing you could call him. I can’t wait to see y’all’s garden. Great video!!!
I'm so glad you made this video right now. It's encouraging and motivating. I'm having a hard time getting excited about starting plants this year. I'll watch this one again and a few others of seed starting to get me going in the morning because tomorrow is 8 weeks before our last frost, and I think that's when most of the seeds I have are meant to be started. Oh, my! Thank you for being an inspiration!
So glad you enjoyed it!
cant wait to see your garden grows, im pretty excited.
The song was about 'the one eyed, one horned, flying purple people eater'.
My peppers were being slow until my heat mats came in and they burst into life!
We used to make starts in the paper egg cartons and transplanting was easy just by ripping out a cup , and it's biodegradable. I think we are gonna be later this spring we are supposed to have some more cold weather for a bit.
Haven't been able to start my container chair garden yet, so really enjoy ya'll doing yours, thank you . God Bless. Jean 😊
Thank you Jean!!
Enjoyed the visit 🤗❤️
Exciting to see seeds being planted. Come on seeds, show your stuff.❤
For the last 2 years 3/4 of my garden is winter sown. I use 2 Lt bottles and only cover with a sheet if any sprouts are up and it's below freezing. I only water if there's no condensation inside. I love not having to harden off... maybe just open during the day for 3 days. And you can reuse the jugs. Love y'all! God bless.
Wonderful-thank you for sharing your experience 😀
As I watch, it had warmed up enough to melt most of the snow, but woke up this morning to snow and still snowing. Gardening and the struggles make me appreciate what our ancestors must have gone through. Power outages also make e appreciative of all we have. We are truly blessed 🧡🙏🏻
You’re so casual about your gardening and I bet that’s why you have such success! I followed every recommendation from buying loads of specialty soil to using peat pots and I think I worried my seeds and plants to death😂 Also gophers ate the artichokes.
For the most part, green chili peppers are under ripe. They will continue to ripen to their final color if the growing season will allow it. The seed packet should tell you what color they are when fully ripe, but you can taste them along the way and decide when they have the best flavor for you.
Love you greenhouse! Cool! Great tip use solo cups. Thanks! I am starting small planting peppers 🌶️ & tomatoes 🍅 Going to be fun! First time to garden by myself. Husband was the gardener.
Alicia Jean’nette from Arkansas
It’s Yellower! 😊
Maybe tater, yelloer, maters
Thank you for sharing your precious memories with us! You can hear the love in your voice.🙂
Looking forward to updates on how all the plants are doing!
Since the bank is cleared, have you ever thought of throwing a bunch of flower seeds on it? Even if you got a couple of packages of wildflower seeds, how beautiful that would look on the bank.
Thank you Lea! That would be pretty 😀
Corey, chamomile is practically a weed here. I live in the Pacific Northwest. Neighbors planted it many years ago. They have long since moved away but the Chamomile has spread all over the neighborhood.
Oh goodness Corie would love that 😀
I'm excited to try the milk jugs, thanks for the tip, I too think for my Dad when it comes to planting time, he loved to grow a garden.
I keep a garden log and write dates placement and some sketches that way you always know what’s what
Getting started with the gardening is always exciting! Stay safe!
Peter piper picked a pack of purple peppers. :) That is all I remember of the rhyme...
Exciting to watch y’all doing your garden starts…hopefully your experiment does well….😊😊
Thanks!
Thank you Debbie! We so appreciate your support 😀
from Google translate " interjection : Gesundheit! Bless you!, God bless you!
My daughter and I did the same thing the other day! She told me about using milk containers as little greenhouses , I planted arugula and it sprouted!
Camilus is a very good knife ... well known and much appreciated back in the day (pronounced Camel- us). God bless.
Thank you Sam 😀
