Cristiano Ronaldo's been having a tough time at Manchester United lately. As a Ronaldo fan, it's tough to watch. But at the same time, we have to be realistic here.
But before that, it's important to ask the question: how did we get to this point?

We bought Ronnie when I was 14, the second he hit the pitch we knew he was something special. A month or so later I remember being in my mums car and she pulled up to some lights near the airport. I looked out the window and there next to me was Ronaldo himself in a black Range Rover - curly hair, wonky teeth and all! He put his thumb up and said "Manchester Is Best!" - I've been in love with the boy ever since.
When he came back last year I was absolutely buzzing! However, as great as he was last season, the team wasn't, and with ETH now at the wheel we really should have let him go in the summer. It's like keeping a Lion caged, it's just not right.

Mate, love the amazing work you do. Your videos are not only informative and funny, but rewatchable. As a Man United fan, and one who idolized Ronaldo as a kid, this saga has been tough to watch as it's played out. To watch a club legend's relationship with the club sour, a legend who, in his first stint, we got to see grow from boy into the world beater he became, is heartbreaking. I can only hope that with the passage of time Ronny has only good things to say about his time in Old Trafford. And speaking of another legendary # 7 ...
Can we please get a video of Beckham's time at Old Trafford??

  • @DarthwRath
    @DarthwRath Před rokem +90

He is one of the greatest goalscorers ever, that's just the fact.
Unfortunately he has always been all about himself. That's not news if you have been watching football for the past 15 years. He demands the ball, throws tantrums when things don't go well for him and is obsessed with his stats (even more obsessed with his rivalry with in my opinion, The GOAT = Leo Messiah).
Sure, some would call me bias because I bleed blaugrana and Messi is why i even watch football. He is just lightyears ahead of everyone else on and off the pitch. But yeah, this was expected.
With age, Ronaldo will lose his sharpness and his negative qualities will overshadow the positives. He relied on his physique so much and you can't blame him. That's just how he plays and he's bloody great at it for a almost 2 decades.
While Messi understands he's not gonna pinball-dribble for 50 yards every 10 minutes anymore with age. So he changes his playing ways. He's more of a playmaker than a poacher with age. Conserving his energy for little burst here and there when needed. It is a gamble though because both of them don't press much.
But Messi doesn't need to score or assist to have a great game. He's just something else entirely. They are very different players as well etc etc.
That's my take. I will not entertain "pEnAlDo or pEsSi" comments. Those are cancers of the planet and i despise both of those shit slinging nonsense.
Another good video from you btw. Cheers.

The problem I see with Messi the playmaker is can he do it against a big team last year real verratti was the better midfielder. I am just not sure if his output against big teams just with playmaking is enough. Cause he doesn't defend doesn't run much. With these kinds of players it's always will their good qualities outshine their bad ones. At some point it will not and that point has happened with Ronaldo. He can play make but it's always hard to adapt your playstyle against the smaller teams it doesn't really get exposed but Ronaldo as example never really was a lone forward he even as a striker was best playing off someone. Against worse teams it works but against the big teams the small things you do that are wrong for your position can really break things. Last year Messi was also trying to play make against Madrid but it wasn't really working. He could be better now but until now there wasn't a test this season.

Barring a handful of goals here or there, Ronaldo's last 10-12 years career can be summed up simply in goal tally figures. You don't need to watch his goals cause they are nothing but fuckall tap ins and penalties. There is nothing to enjoy about this mans gameplay.
Conversely, Leo's goals are not just figures, you are always in for a treat the way he executes his goals. His assists and vision of the game are world apart as well.

I have been a Manchester United fan since I was 5 years old. My dad introduced me to soccer (I live in the United States) at that age and I started playing it in my town youth leagues. At the time when I was a kid, I did not know that Ronaldo played for Manchester United; in fact, the reason I fell in love with Man United was Wayne Rooney.
As I got older, I realized who Cristiano Ronaldo was and the type of person he was, as well as learning what clubs he played for. I originally believed him to the outspoken pretty cocky boy against the level headed and quiet playmaker that was Lionel Messi.
But 2022 was the year I truly felt bad for Ronaldo. He lost a child at birth, had many issues with the manager and playes at Man U and with his recent issues with Portugal, I couldn't help but feel for him.
Thank you @FootballIconic for helping me realize the bigger scope on Ronaldo's life and mentality. I knew a majority of this, I just needed clarafication for myself.

Even though I also have always believed that Messi is superior to CR7 by quite a large margin, I also have always held a ton of respect for Ronny. Seeing him on the bench week after week actually hurts me, its almost like a beautiful animal in a cage, it just leaves a sour aftertaste.
Recently it feels like all the old untouchables has been going through some kind of rough patches, whether it be the Rodgers and Bradys of the world, or the Messis and Ronaldos. Its almost a melancholic beauty in it, as it reminds you that everything in this world is finite, and you should appriecitate the moments while they last.

I wondered why Manchester United wanted him back. Any team that picks up CR7 is going to have to cover in pressing for him, there is no doubt about that. CR7 would fit beautifully well in a team that does everything right except the goal-scoring part.
It might not happen but something like a Leicester City or a Newcastle United might benefit from having him play during the second half of most games if not as a regular starter who gets subbed out later. There will have to be a second striker / midfielder who may not be a top goal scoring threat but is good at pressing immediately. This second player either gets subbed on or off for him.
Even though it is not a serious consideration, Atletico Madrid could take him and rotate him with Angel Correa for example. A team will have to play around him to get the best results and most "Europa League" teams can benefit from having a well thought out tactic built around him.
Of course, I am just speculating and most of these teams have a good shot in the UCL anyway but if they can get CR7 for a reasonable salary, they can consider building around him. It is no doubt, worth it.

A lot of wingers/forwards gradually shifted to playmaking in their later years to adapt better in the games. Like how Ryan Giggs slowly transformed into a playmaker around 2006 and continued to play on as an important part of the team for a few more years. Messi also has almost completely turned into a player maker now. Those who don't, seem to die out really quickly, as their physicality starts declining. CR7's progression was an opposite one. I guess it was around 2013 when he decided to abandon his winger traits, in search of even more goals and gradually became a target man. It worked for years, actually. But now, when he's not scoring, he doesn't really seem to contribute anything else to the team and sadly, he cannot adapt to any new role anymore. Always wanting to be the absolute best, this is where his frustrations come in, to an extent of this situation. He could've gone to MLS and boost his 'brand' but he still seems to be very threatened that someone else will surpass his records, in UCL for example.

But keeping up that level of strenght at 37 is an impossible task. Don't get me wrong, the man has quality beyond raw power, but a lot of that quality is dependant of his physical performance.

Self-confidence isn't a bad thing as long as it isn't misplaced. But Man U let it run away when it re-signed CR. Cavani had played well the previous season but had to give up the 7 on his back to fulfil CR's demands and Man U's shirt marketing department. It was the moment when it was confirmed undeniably that non-football matters are now more important than football.

Honestly the current united system doesn't suit him at all. Look at haaland, mbappe, messi, lewa, benzema, they're not expected to press because they're in control with high percentage of possession. On the other hand united gets pounded by the opposition so ronnie cannot sit back and wait.
You can beat epl big boys without intense counter pressing (ex: real madrid). Remind me how much did benzema press last season? Or even lewa?

This video hasn't aged well, cause United are nowhere good without him. Using this man as a scapegoat at United is nothing but a distant memory. I don't think it's Ronaldo, but the rest of the squad who stopped evolving with football. Had they even done half of what cristiano has done, they would've won league cups long ago.

I don't think Ronaldo is finished as many are saying. He just has to come to facts that he is no longer as good as he was in his prime, and times he won't be played for the benefits of the team. He needs to come to terms that his team comes first before him. I believe if he is to go to another bigger club he'll excel very well, and might as well help out with the development of up and coming players

Right now the great CR7 is a distraction. This doesnt bode well for legacy however great you are. He is now a distraction to ManU and Portugal but still lethal. His ego took over at Madrid and went overboard at Juve. He will not thrive in big teams now, he is better served saving mid teams. But you feel for him because he is still very top level fit and can go on for the next 5 years and still wants top team football. Well he has to check his ego. His peer Messi seems humble and now has a World Cup. CR7 should retire to save his legacy

" Even at his physical prime he never used to press relentlessly .....track back" ...I disagree with you on this. The front 3 of Ronaldo, Rooney & Tevez were beasts in this regards, and yes they tracked back. remember his shots from 40 yeards? Those did not happen while he was standing in front of the opposite keeper. There are many vidos of him trcking back and winning the balll and taking on multiples opponents.
also he was under Jose at Real Madrid. NO ONE IS LAZY IN A MOURINGHO TEAM.! NO ONE!.
I think he is just over that kind of game. Same with Ibra when he came to Man U.

The media always makes the lives of players rough, I have a feeling that if maybe Portugal could've had a better chance against Morocco if he was in the starting eleven or subbed in earlier, he does have skill but yeah, he's 37 and it's that end of career moment, and he's not having a good one, I that things get better to him

  • @mishagelenava2962
    @mishagelenava2962 Před rokem

I think the pressing part is not quite as simple. I mean, Messi doesn't press either. And Argentina does. But there were no questions about Messi being a starter for Argentina. The point is that the biggest problem with Ronaldo is not that he can't press, the problem is that his offensive output has declined too. If ge was offensively as potent as he was 5 or 7 years ago, Ten Hag would do everything to accommodate Ronaldo.
So, you either need to be common soldier of the team, who works hard 90 minutes or outstanding offensive weapon. Unfortunately for Ronaldo, at this point he's neither.
P.S. It's unlikely but still possible that he gets in form and makes a big comeback in European football.

So why subbing him in when the is almost over.
He wanted to leave the Club and ETH also wanted him to leave in the Summer.

11:15 honestly you can find the turnover and how both wide forward work in the internet if you searching hard enough.
But yeah, the main problem with ronaldo and united that dont play goal poaching stiker, we play wide forward as our main goal scorer, with him trying to score alongside rashford(greenwood back then) and anthony means they ALL wants service and to score, if everyone wants to score NONE will.
A cheap Deep lying forward like ihenacho might work to replace him.
