    I don’t know if this is the case, but the children’s book issue I think is somewhat common - I have a friend whose really good at Chinese (I envy him so much) but he still can’t read children’s books because a lot of them are full of idioms, or rhyming and just generally really hard to understand without having been raised there. Love your videos - every time I watch I feel so motivated to learn languages :)

      @NataliaGarza  Před 4 lety +13

      I think Chinese relies on idioms more than Korean, but I wouldn't be surprised if that's why I have such a hard time understanding the stories 😭😭 I think for me it's very random vocabulary that I've never had the need for~ For example, I'm currently reading Alice in Wonderland and now know random words like "hole," "vest," and "pocket watch." 😂 Hopefully the more I read, the easier the stories will become~! It's been just over 4 years since I've started studying Korean. I was lucky enough to be able to take the first 2.5 years of Korean at University, but since then I've only been self-studying. Well, I say self study, but I've been extremely lazy in studying the way I know I should after I graduated. So I'm a bit disappointed in my current skill level. I feel like it should be way higher had I kept up better study habits.
    That being said, I feel you on the children's books. I bought one after studying for 1 year and realized it was way above my level still haha. Also, I was trying to study to take the TOPIK II exam, and those advanced reading questions get super academic while the advanced listening questions are basically academic lectures or presentations. Studying for that made me realize how much my vocabulary is holding me back more than anything else.
    I couldn't take the TOPIK exam this year due to COVID cancelling it in my area, so for my peace of mind I stopped studying for it, too haha. Too much stress. But I still meet with an italki teacher once a week for a 1 hour conversation of free talking. I'm not sure if I've noticed any improvement, but I do enjoy talking in Korean when I get the chance.
    Also for fun, I made sure the subs were OFF when you started speaking in Korean to talk about your speaking skills. I would say I understood about 99%. There were one or two words I wasn't sure I knew, but it didn't really keep me from understanding what you were intending to say.
    I'm sure what I'm trying to say other than I have some similar experiences in trying to gauge any growth in my Korean skills.

    You crack me up!!! Love this video~ it's so true, no matter how "long" we learn, it's all relative and depends on many factors, greatly. A lot of parents teach their kids to speak Korean, as in little babies have Korean tutors to teach them to speak fluent Korean. So little kids books are really difficult 😬. They're not always for fun, usually it's "educational fun". A few of my students have Korean comic books that teach them various subjects (like Detective Butt series, Kakao Friends series, etc.) One gave me a book to borrow and I could understand nothing 🤣.
    As for listening, I went through this phase a few years ago when I watched all kinds of legal dramas and I absorbed all this vocab related to legal proceedings even though I still couldn't use any of it🤣 Need to get back into listening to different kinds of material!

      @@Malaak_adnan6578 I think learning fast is a real motivator, but you shouldn't depend on it. I've been "studying" English for over 11 years now, and I've just gotten to the point, where I can read most semi-scientific papers and write stories in English. I'm still horrible at real life conversations though, because I rarely have to use English in my everyday life. So, I think you can improve relatively fast during the first few stages of learning a language, but the fine tuning takes a whole lot of time.

      @@Smiuley that’s awesome how you’ve studied more than 11 years to learn English, I totally agree with you, and yes, learning fast is huge motivator. And thank you for the advice. I kinda did quit learning Korean but seeing comment; learning English for more than 11 years is super impressive, it does makes me wanna start learning again but it does take up a lot of courage to get that motivation back to start again. I also do try to you know watch a lot of Korea drama to get me to where I am like learning simple phrase like “ thank you” etc, sometimes I think to myself, if I was going to learn korean, is it really worth it, and I don’t even know when will I ever speak it. Because I’m still in high school and I still have a lot ahead of me in life, however sometimes I do think that it is waste of time but then I realise that learning new thing makes me enjoy life especially things you’re passionate about. I think your comment did boost my motivation to try again and not give up so I want to thank you!

Is it even possible to learn korean to the level of watching k dramas without subtitles or to have a conversation with someone by self studying? I know it's also going to depend on the person but is it possible? I want to learn Korean through self-study because I have no other way (that is how I found this channel on youtube). Is it going to be possible without an initial interaction with people? But my question is, because i haven't reached that level yet, why do Koreans (and you as well as other native English speakers) speak Korean with such a high pitched intonation, even if you may naturally have a low pitched speaking voice as an English speaker? I did do a small course in uni though but that was extracurricular with beginner level korean. I can read and get the gist of things and same with listening. But when I write I have to look things up obsessed with getting the perfect sentence. My speaking isn't there lmao though I did talk to a Korean grandma once and she said my Korean was good haha. But I know I need to just practice but damn there's just no time and I tend to consume Korean content passively and not actively... My question has nothing to relate to your video but has to do with this Hangul symbol “ㄱ” in particular. In words/phrases, it both makes two different sounds, “g” and “k”. Is there a certain spot in words that it particularly makes one or the other sounds? Like how can you tell that symbol makes a “k” or a “g” sound when pronouncing the word?

      I don't know of any official rules for "ㄱ." I thought about this for a few days and I realized that any pattern that I thought could be considered as an unofficial pronunciation rule had too many exceptions, so I think I'll just have to say that you'll start to know when "ㄱ" will be pronounced more like a "g" or "k" once you've has enough exposure to the language.
      After a few months of study, I was able to "feel" whether the "ㄱ" in a new word was a "k" or "g" sound, so I wouldn't stress about it too much~ Honestly, I learned most Korean pronunciation rules/patterns by just doing a lot of listening!

    i think i'm sort of the opposite. i can understand spanish very well and write term papers in spanish, but dialogue is really hard for me if it's with a native speaker. i can speak spanish very well on my own or around my non-spanish speaking family but when it comes to native speakers it's like my brain can't compute lol
