    Ok but I didn't actually realize how much of a waste of time taking notes was until you pointed it out so...thank you! lol I had this whole issue about not writing in my books but honestly, they're there for me to learn from and write in. Now I feel like the more I write in my books the more love is shown on each page. Anyway, I'm going to try to use these books and see how it does. I'm still a beginner, but since I am about to graduate college and have a little time between my internship and masters, I want to set SMART goals for my Korean and really dive into it! I've been doing alright.......EXCEPT FOR having a tough time keeping up with my university classes. 👺 Which is why I had to take a looooong break from studying Korean.
      I took Spanish & Mandarin which were tons of fun but they kind of.. pushed the Korean language even further away from me cause I realized that studying 5 foreign languages was a bit much for my brain. So I had to sacrifice Korean to pass my university classes. 😂😂

    Taking courses at a uni that uses these and I tried self studying my book the week leading up to classes.. I got about 1 chapter of intense studying done and skimmed 3 others. it was really apparent these were not straight up self studier friendly.
    If anyone is looking for a friendly textbook, the seoul textbooks are pretty good. Major downside though is that the formatting wastes some space so you have 4 books (two texts, 2 workbooks) per term instead of two.

    Oh my goodness your order of studying things is very similar to mine! I like to get the vocab down first so when it comes to the lesson text, I can make meaningful grammar connections instead of trying to worry about what all of these words mean first. Also, and everyone can answer this is you guys feel like it, but say you get a lot of listening practice from watching shows with subtitles so you don’t really feel like buying the textbook just for the transcript, should I just buy the study guide then?

    • @NataliaGarza
      @NataliaGarza  Před 4 lety +2

      Yeassss! Someone who gets why I learn the vocab first~!! 💕
      Mmmmm the textbook has some great speaking insights, extra writing exercises, and cultural reading passages (in Korean), so there are more reasons to get it other than the listening exercises haha If you're okay with the number of writing and reading passages in the workbook, then yes! I think you can skip the textbook!
      If you're looking at getting the book, maybe get one of the textbooks instead of the two textbooks for your level (assuming you're lvl 1, 2, or 3). That way you can try it out to see if getting the second half is worth it or not~

  • @luminescnt

    😯 but the 1-1 workbook does have listening exercises. It’s weird the following ones don’t. For some reason I’ve found it difficult (as in kind of boring) to get through these books, by now they’re only helping me to review topics I already learned somewhere else, but seeing how much you like them and your method makes me wonder if I should get 1-2 when I’m finally done with 1-1. 🤔 My favorite part is the Functional Expressions in the guide book. I’ve been also wondering if it would be a good idea to just get the guide books and workbooks, and ignore the textbooks, but then I wouldn’t get the audio and transcripts you mentioned. 🤔 Sorry, I’m just trying to make up my mind in your comment box. 😆

      Hmmmm If you're doing listening exercises or practice via another resource, then I think it would be fine to just get the study guide and workbook!! Hi 👋🏻 I really hope you see this! I’ve been studying with Ttmik and I’m only on level 2. For this book series would you suggest starting with level 1-1 and getting all three books or would just the study guide you recommend be enough? I’m planning to get an italki tutor soon as I think having a tutor to go over things with could potentially be helpful and I don’t know if that would make studying with these books any different having a tutor to assist. Also any help/advice/recommendations for italki tutors would be very much appreciated! I love your Chanel, you’re so bubbly and relatable! 😊 thank you in advance!

    • @NataliaGarza
      @NataliaGarza  Před 3 lety +1

      hiiiii~ okay so, if you're going to get a tutor and study with them regularly, I would just wait to see what textbook they use to teach you! Most of them will have a textbook they follow, so it'd be better for you to just get a copy of that book! If you're still on the fence about getting a tutor, then I would suggest getting the study guide and the workbook for 1-1! The textbook isn't very helpful if you don't have a tutor/teacher. I think the main pro about the textbook is that it has some additional grammar, reading, and writing exercises. I'm not sure if the 1-1 has listening exercises only in the textbook like the level 3 and 4 books tho.
      Here is a link to my italki teacher~ She's great, but a little more on the pricey side~

    • @NataliaGarza
      @NataliaGarza  Před 4 lety +11

      Haha that's up to you~! But I do think it's a well-rounded textbook! It's not too focused on any one skill~
      Hmmmm I don't really know how it compares to TTMIK, but I would say that if you're a beginner, the beginner levels of any Korean university textbook are levels 1 and 2! Ewha breaks down levels 1-3 into two parts, so level 1 is 1-1 and 1-2, level 2 is 2-1 and 2-2, etc. If you've only been studying with TTMIK, I would suggest starting off with level 1 because the amount of vocabulary taught in each level is more than TTMIK's grammar lessons teach you across all their levels. For example, my level 3 books teach about 75 words per chapter.
      If you would prefer to start with level 2, then I suggest studying all the vocabulary in level 1 on Memrise or Quizlet first. The last thing you want is to have double to vocabulary to study!

    • @nicoleraheem1195

      @@sebastianskimmeli5464 I have both Ehwa and Integrated korean.
      When I had started learning Korean, back in April of 2020, I moved from material to material and mastered nothing. I have only been able to grasp the basics. PLUS, I was not consistent and didn't study for a total of 8-10 months.
      Now, I use a few resources but I make sure to study that resource at least five times. A lesson learned from the polyglot OLLY RICHARDS. He said make sure you can translate in both speaking and writing, in both languages, before you move on to the next material.
      I am moving on to level 3 of TTMIK after going over Level 1 and 2, 5 times and not consecutively, I mean over a course of several weeks, maybe a few months.
      I am on lesson 7 of integrated Korean 1
      But I am going to review once I complete the book.
      I made it up to Ewha chapter 2, then I put it aside, and decided to master the few resources I have, then revisit EWHA.
      My advice to you, is to cover most of many beginner material out there.
      When it becomes to redundant, you will know to move on to more advance material
      Work through workbooks
      Read korean/english bilingual books.
      Read graded readers
      Watch Korean learning shows made for children
      Listen to korean learning podcasts
      And if you think you understand the material, tell yourself what you think you understand by using korean language only.
      Once you get through that, aim to know what 2 year olds know. Lol Then 3 years olds, then 4, and etc.
      Or
      Go big
      Learn synonyms and honorifics.
      Lol Depends on you.
      I like TTMIK if one is going from 0 to Beginner.
      But TTMIK moves faster than Integrated.
      It takes about 7 lessons of Integrated to TTMIK 2levels.
      I love EHWA pronunciation chapter.
      It is better than anything I have come across.
      So, if you need something slow paced, work with Integrated and use PROF YOON on youtube,as your teacher.
      Once you complete part 1, complete Ewha then after that, completed BASIC KOREAN 1 AND KOREAN GRAMMAR IN USE BEG TO INTERMEDIATE.
      THEN, move on to integrated level 2.
      Revisit after 30 to 90 days of study.
      Test yourself and write a short story with what you learned

      If you've already studied up to level 5, there's no need to start over haha I would suggest picking up with another resource though! If you want to try another free resource before looking into purchasing a textbook, I suggest trying HowtoStudyKorean.com! I think it's more well-rounded than TTMIK's grammar lessons. Like with a textbook, I suggest studying the vocabulary either on Memrise or Quizlet before starting each lesson. I'm not too familiar with their units, but I believe that you'd be in Unit 2 or 3 since you've covered TTMIK level 4 and start level 5!

    Hi. I was about to finish Korean Grammar In Use Beginner book and thinking of buying a separate book for the vocabulary (2000 Essential Korean Words by Darakwon again) but after seeing your references/study guide, I think I want to switch to Ewha. What can you suggest? I don't know which to buy next 😅

    • @NataliaGarza
      @NataliaGarza  Před 3 lety

      If you've mainly been focusing on grammar, then I think you'll definitely need to put more emphasis on vocab as you mentioned~ I can't comment on the book by Darakwon because I haven't seen it before haha But if you're looking to switch to Ewha, I would think you could probably skip the level one books since I assume you know most of that vocabulary already.
      I'd suggest starting with the level 2 books. I think you'll probably know most of the grammar already, but since each chapter should have 75+ words, based on my experience with the level 3 and 4, I think it would be a good place to start. Ewha is pretty well rounded, so, even if you're not learning new grammar, I'm sure you'll learn a lot out of it.
      Before you buy anything, I suggest looking on Memrise or Quizlet to see what words are in the books to see if you know them already or not. Levels 1-3 all have two parts, 1-1, 1-2, 2-1, 2-2, 3-1, and 3-2. So make sure you review the vocabulary in both parts of the level~!

      @NataliaGarza  Před 3 lety

      It really depends on what kind of beginner you are. If you're a complete beginner you'll start off with the 1-1 books. If you've already been studying Korean for a bit but are still a beginner, then you'd start with the 2-1 books.
      Level 1-3 each have 2 parts: 1-1, 1-2, 2-1, 2-2, 3-1, and 3-2
      Basically the publisher decided to split the levels up into two parts. I assume they did this simply for convince, but who knows haha
      If you start off with the level one books, you'll be looking at all the 1-1 and 1-2 textbooks, study guides, and workbooks.
