Exactly correct...I'd been hearing it for years on my local AM radio powerhouse and was none the wiser until once when I was 15 and out at a small dinner party with my dad, and I asked the host to pull A Night at the Opera out of his stacks and give it a spin (so that I could hear "Bohemian Rhapsody" while totally high af) ---complete surprise to me that this was Fred & Co. hiding in plain sight all along

I still remember when I was first discovering Queen’s discography in the late 2000’s, when I found out they did “We Will Rock You” and “Don’t Stop Me Now” and the diversity in their style, the pure talent they had, I’ve been a fan ever since 👍

I've been a Queen fan since 1973, I was 12 - Best Friend was written by the fabulous John Deacon in 1975 for his wife and was on their 'Night at the Opera' album. It's definitely in my Queen top ten favourites. Just love it!

The whole Night at the Opera album is FANTASTIC. It's always paired with The Game in my head because my parents had recorded them from the vinyl onto each side of a cassette when I was growing up, so I always hear the albums one after the other in the car.

You’re My Best Friend” was written by the band’s bass player, John Deacon. He composed this love song for his new wife, Veronica Tetzlaff, whom he married in January 1975, shortly before the album was recorded.
Queen had just purchased an electric piano for their studio but Freddie didn't like how it sounded compared to his grand piano so he refused to play it. John decided to take it home and teach himself how to play the piano. He said that the song just sort of jumped out of the piano as he taught himself to play it. (It is a totally different vibe than the Queen song, "Another One Bites The Dust" which John also wrote.)
BTW - John and Veronica are still married and have 6 kids.

In the 1970s, I won an 8th grade draw. My prize was A Night At The Opera. I sat next to a charismatic girl who wore tight jeans before anyone else in our school. I liked her a lot and she was a huge Queen fan. She started asking me if I knew this song or that song. And then she asked me if I knew "You're My Best Friend"". I said no, I did not know that I was her best friend. It felt like a red-faced eternity and I was gutted with embarrassment but she was mercifully tactful and carried on (without missing a beat) by telling how much fun it was to open the cellophane covering on a brand new album. So, yeah, I was a real player in 1976.

As others mentioned, John wrote this about his wife. The story behind this is they purchased the keyboard, but Freddie would only play piano. John wanted to learn keyboard, so he took it home and wrote this song as he was learning. Notice John is playing keyboard in this. It’s one of my favorite. Fan from the beginning.

Takes me way back to my teenage years, every Queen song was different from the last and everybody sang along word for word with the radio, we saved all our money for albums and concert tickets. One of my favorite memories was hanging out at the bowling alley on Friday night and when We will rock you / We are the Champions came on and everyone on every single lane would start doing the Stomp Stomp Clap, you could literally feel the building shaking. So much great music back then ♄

In 1976 this song was huge and Queen came to Adelaide, Australia and I went to their concert, I was 14 and it was my second concert...the first being the Jackson Five in 1972. Spectacular and Freddie towards the end of the concert had this giant bunch of red roses which he handed out to the audience at the front and someone got Brian May's drum sticks. All of us not at the front were so jealous! I wonder if anyone still has their rose!

This song is on my list of the most perfectly crafted pop-rock songs due to the great chord progression, beautiful melody and background harmonies, the heartfelt lyrics and the perfect melodic guitar solo and riffs (it was on their classic album A Night At The Opera, which I played like crazy when I was a kid). As other people have commented, it was written by the bassist, John Deacon, in reference to his wife.

And I don't feel they became a singles band after that either. To me each album only has a couple real singles (Hot Space almost none), and some of their later albums I could listen to pretty much no skips, which I couldn't do with their earlier albums

Written by bassist John Deacon about his lovely wife Veronica - in 1975 they were newly-wed and expecting their first baby.
But the truly unique backstory on this : There was an Electric Piano at the studio - Freddie *hated* the thing and absolutely refused to play it. ( “Why would anyone want to play a horrible electric piano when we have this lovely grand piano ?”, he said
)
So John, being who he is, took the electric piano home with him
*and taught himself how to play keyboards*
It was in the process of this self-teaching project that the song idea struck him.
He wrote “You’re My Best Friend” and took himself, the electric piano, and the song idea back to the studio.
John ended up playing the electric piano part ON the studio recording because , as he himself said “The song was written on electric piano, and that’s how it sounds best.”

John deacon wrote the song and played the keyboard as Freddie didn't like to play that type of keyboard. But he played the piano when they performed it live. Great song!

One of my mom’s favorite Queen songs!! She owned the vinyl albums of A Night At The Opera & A Day At The Races! She passed in 2018. 😱 The song has been featured in several TV Shows & Film .. most notably The Break-Up with Vince Vaughn & Jennifer Aniston & the zombie cult classic Shaun Of The Dead. Wonderful song! đŸŒˆâ˜€ïžđŸŒ·đŸŠ‹

Brad is too funny! Yes, there is that moan and ahhhh at the end that lets you know it's not just a 'buddy', it's a lover-best friendship. Is it warm in here, or is it just all the candles in that video. But as 100 folks are already telling you, it was John Deacon, that quiet bass player (who is playing the piano here) that wrote this for his lovely lady-wife. I guess a bit of moaning does fit the bill as they have 6 kids.

Queen are just stuffed with 'classics', they were the first band to be inducted into the songwriters Hall of Fame, all four members penned hits.
That's extremally rare in a rock band, every album had a high standard in songwriting alone.
They sold 90.23 million studio albums over 15 releases, a solid average of 6 million per effort.
Legends, never will we see their like again. RIP Freddie Mercury

From the same album (A Night At The Opera) as Bohemian Rhapsody. This album is their masterpiece. Every song is different. My favorite song on this album is the one right after You're My Best Friend it's called 39 sung by Bryan May the guitar player. Acoustic guitar and double bass. There first song Death On Two Legs is great rocker about their first business manager who stole all their money from their first 3 albums. Enjoy the channel and wishing you two the best on your family journey when your boy arrives. Maybe he'll become the next Freddie Mercury.

There are a lot of good songs on "A Night at the Opera" but there are a lot of filler songs, too.

That's hilarious. You know how I discovered the song? it was when Bohemian Rhapsody and Killer Queen were two highly played songs on the radio and I can't remember which one it was because I ended up with both of them, but I was a kid and I managed to score them for cheap at a yard sale and I mostly would play side a but one of them, side B was this song, and after a while I realized that I really liked it. it's still one of my favorite Queen songs.

Hey guys I really enjoy your reactions. I believe the song is about his best friend Mary. THEY did sleep together maybe a few times buy then Freddie realized he was a homosexual. I belive the will stayed she was left everything he had, money, properties, and collectibles. She had control over his life and career.
