Actually it's not about being gay, John (the bassist) wrote this one and it's about his personal problems. Roger's girlfriend had the idea for the whole band to dress up as women, doing a parody of "coronation street" (a British tv show). Then obviously this took on another meaning because of Freddie's sexuality.
It's an easy mistake to make in hindsight, but yeah, if you're like me and are a massive Queen fanatic, you can kind of tell when something is written primarily by Freddie because he wrote almost all his songs on piano rather than guitar, so they'll often have that as a focal point; Brian's naturally are more guitar oriented; whereas John, the bass player who wrote this, Another One Bites the Dust and You're My Best Friend, tends to write the ones with the most developed rhythm section.
Ah okay thanks for the insight!
@@radicaladz I never made that connection to the different sounds, thank you for sharing!
@@radicaladz Freddie was such a superstar, casual fans didnât appreciate the genius of the rest of the band or their contributions to the songwriting.
That kind of cross dressing was a lot more normal in Britain back then, from Monty Python all the way back to Shakespeare.
I can't get over how good Roger Taylor looks as a girl.
Came here to say this. Definitely the best looking Fe-Male in the band. I always thought him and Benjamin Orr looked very similar.
and then theres john as a grandma
Rogerina.
@@MundoDragon- Agree! Not only did Roger Taylor and Benjamin Orr have a definite facial resemblance, especially when both had similar haircuts/hairstyles, there were times when they dressed similarly, too, although that was outfit components, not matching outfits, thank goodness! For example, each had at least 2 or 3 shirts almost identical to the otherâs. Offhand, I can recall a pair of pants, and a leather jacket, too. I think itâs almost always a she thing, not a he thing, to notice that! Oddly, itâs photos of Benjamin that look like possibly of Roger to me, usually not vice versa.
@@ellab8897 YES and both were so GORGEOUS đ
Freddie said in an interview that they laughed so much when making this video. And when it came to dressing up in women's clothes..even though he is the only gay one..the others were the first to go jump in those clothes. Lol And look how pretty Roger is (drummer) Hahahaha
Roger is such a cutie.
My thoughts exactly, Roger as a woman so pretty.
What about being GAY do you think makes you want to dress as a woman??? Really!
@@Infyra Roger is the best looking by far for sure lol
One thing you must realize is, not only did the others run to dress in drag...THEY ( Roger first ) were the ones who came up with the whole idea of dressing in drag. Freddie had NOTHING to do with it...and just went right along and enjoyed the hell out of it.
Also, one of my favourite Queen songs. They were just fabulous. Freddie was a very shy person, off stage. If you watch any of his interviews, it shows just how shy he really was. But once he was on stage...... Wow... he owned that stage. He was very flamboyant. He is missed & loved by millions. â€â€â€â€â€â€â€â€â€â€â€â€â€â€â€
yes is all i can say!
This video has a few concepts. The dancers are from the Royal British Ballet, they are performing a ballet called The Afternoon Of The Faun. And the scenes with the lights were Queen showing support for a mining strike at the time. The song is about John Deacon wanting to break away from touring so much, he wanted to spent more time with his family, he was a family man. You guys have to check out I Want It All from Queen, you will recognise the song.
love the way you both take everything so seriously and there has to be a meaning. This is English humour with a terrific song.
Freddie's dance sequence is based on the Ballets Russes' L'AprĂšs-midi d'un faune [The Afternoon of a Faun], first performed in Paris in 1912, including the costumes.
It was Roger's girlfriend who suggested they dressed up as woman..it's from a British show...Freddie housewife, Roger in pigtails, John elderly woman and Brian in nightgown and curlers
was not expecting an interlude to discuss art in nature vs human creation, but so good! keep it up guys :)
The naked form of the body many artist think & have commented that in itself is a work of art. Thank you for accepting Freddie for who he is. I saw Queen twice. Live in concert & Freddie is 1 of the greatest performers i have ever seen.
This track was written by John Deacon, so it was not about Freddie wanting to break free
Absolutely zero do do with Freddie's sexuality. The song was in fact written by bassist John Deacon and the whole dressing up idea came from Roger Taylor's partner. As for the dancers, they were members of the Royal Ballet, of which Freddie was a huge fan.
Actually the dressing in drag is just a British humor thing, if you watch old British TV shows you see a lot of it. But the song itself wasn't written about Freddie. but like all music its up for interpretation
The British have known for centuries that men dressing as women, or caricatures of women, is inherently funny - it's a stock feature of pantomime and music hall. Drag at the time, particularly among comedians, was not something exclusive to the gay community in the UK, Fred's orientation notwithstanding, and so it was a lot easier to get away with over here than in America. You could almost say it was so overt it's covert.
@@radicaladz yes, Les Dawson, the 2 Ronnies, Dick Emery. All straight but played some female characters for comedy around this time.
@@radicaladz yep. It kind of makes me laugh that some people in modern times would be outraged at the plays Shakespeare created.
@@paulqueripel3493
It's classic. The old Greeks did it. Stan Laurel & Oliver Hardy did it.
One of the most loved songs from all of Queen's songs...and as stated by a previous poster it has nothing to do with being gay but is a song that can mean anything you want it to mean dependant on your circumstances.
Amazing band, but his vocals are everything! One of my favorite bands ever! â€â€â€
I'm a huge Depeche Mode fan so I love that Lex reacts in such a positive way to their songs, but I think the smile that comes over her face to these Queen reaction videos is even bigger. I guess whatever your musical taste we should all just acknowledge the fact that Queen were one of our finest ever British
exports.
Queen bass player John Deacon wrote this from the male perspective of the women's liberation movement.
This song became an anthem for the ANC in South Africa in the late '80s when Nelson Mandela was still in jail and the white government's apartheid policies were still in place.
The video for this song parodies a popular British television soap, Coronation Street. The opening sequence features all the band members in drag (Mercury as a housewife, Deacon as grandmother, Taylor as a schoolgirl, and May as a housewife). This confused many people who didn't catch the reference. Brian May was asked in an interview with Q magazine March 2011 whether each band member's character in the video was an accurate reflection of their personalities? He replied: "Of Course! Everybody thinks that was Freddie's idea because it looks like something that he would love to do but it actually came from Roger's girlfriend at the time, strangely enough. It was her idea to pastiche the Coronation Street women
"Show must go on" love this song in my opinion one of the best song's of Queen
Those "artistic" dancers were from the Royal Ballet Company. Freddy loved the arts. Ha. As other comments said, this video killed Queen in the USA for many years. This video was banned from MTV and other TV shows, in 1984. The Bible Belt got Queen banned from radio play, all because they saw this video as being disgusting. Men dressing in Drag as women. LOL. The Brits do this all the time for Stage, TV, Films and videos. It is considered "normal" artistic behaviour.
So for years Queen turned their back on the US and concentrated on South America and developed their "Arena" shows. Massive shows playing mainly in the huge Football Stadiums (Soccer) around the world. Plus huge outdoor shows that attracted 2-300,000 people. By the time Live Aid came around in 1985 they had honed their arena presentation to a knife edge. Cheers.
It's just about someone in a suffocating relationship. When this came out the sight of Freddie in a miniskirt doing the vacuuming made me want to tear my eyes out :) He had a unique sense of humour. And he'd basically screw anything of either gender that stayed still long enough.
I think an artists function is to draw your attention to the divinity all around us that we often miss. That is why a painting of a sunset or nude or flower can be so touching. It shows us something we overlook because it's common.
"What in the world are they doing ?" đđđ€Ł That reaction, one of the best đ By the way, Brad's team, naked is nature.
You guys should react toâŠ
Queen - The Show Must Go On
đžđ€
Absolutely they should
Been telling them that for months.
Definetely!
Freddie was not dressed as a cow. The pose and costume were an homage to Nijinsky's interpretation of "Prelude to an Afternoon of a Faun" which caused a near riot in early 20th century France due to the flesh tones of the costume and the dancer's erotic movements.
Bassist John Deacon wrote this song
As others have said, this had nothing to do with Freddie or his sexuality. He never officially came out during his lifetime. He was a private person off stage and didn't want to be a poster boy for gay causes.
Don't feel bad though. Almost all the reactors assume the same thing even though I don't know why people automatically think gay = dressing up as women. lol
Itâs John Deacon the bassist wanting to break free of their schedules and being in the public eye and be with his family doing regular person stuff.
Freddie just wanted to include the Royal Ballet which he loved.
You're making observations and insight that I'd never thought of before!! Excellent work, and thank you!!đ
Two kinds of art:
Novelty art (t-shirts, posters,
Fine art (paintings, music, dancing, singing, etc)
The most hilarious thing about this video is that it was no issue at all in the UK where we had a history of Drag but in the US at the time it was the focus of massively homophobic Conservative campaign of people burning all their Queen albums in disgust. How's that for old school cancel culture. It had a big impact on American Queen sales at the time.
I grew up in the Midwest in the 80âs and I remember people freaking out about this video, I thought it was hilarious.đđđ„đ§
No you don't. How could anyone freak out over a video we didn't even know existed because they never aired it.
@@TVisTheRetina it definitely was aired. The band have said this video killed Queen in America at that time.
@@TVisTheRetina they definitely aired it my friend.đđ
@@jimtatro6550 When? Where? On Vh-1 in 1998?

Queen amazing as always â€ïž
This song brought my love for queen when I was 12
Another amazing song by Queen! Love it! Also the idea of the video was brilliant and still is today. Of course MTV USA at the time censored it....
"It's ok, baby. It's for art."
My absolute favorite Queen song. Great reaction!
He was a showman and not afraid to shock with his artistic flair đ
Unfortunately MTV and vh1 banned playing this video and you never saw much Queen played on them after that, which is ironic since the Bohemian Rhapsody video was made to be watched as well as listened to 6 years before there even was an MTV or vh1. Queen was always ahead of its time! We didn't have any other channels to go to to watch our favorite bands. Buying their albums, cassettes and cds and waiting hours for it to be played on the radio was all we had. So we waited in long lines over night for concert tickets to go on sale and we had so much fun. I'm so happy to have CZcams so I can watch some videos I had never seen before, watching whatever I want whenever I want to. Other than Live Aid I had never seen their live videos, which in my opinion are some of their best versions of my favorite songs.
The only thing Freddie contributed was the voice and using the Royal Ballet of London in the middle section. Song written by Bassist John Deacon.
As you've already seen it's a song written by John Deacon and the video in part is in simpatico with housewives who want to be free from the dull routine. Freddie is dressed like Russian ballet dancer Nijinski's faune.
Guitarist Brian May said that NOT all songs are autobiographical,, sometimes they're just telling a story. By the way, I've met him many times and he's as nice of a guy that you could meet. Shook his hand many times too, hoping that his talent would rub off on me; but I still sound like me on the guitar. Peace to you, Merry Christmas, and I enjoy watching your videos.
The dressing up was a tribute to a soap that has run in the UK since the 1960s
Lex is an intelligent artist disguised as every man's dream-girlfriend. đ
â
John Deacon (bass) wrote "I want to break free"... he was a very quiet, shy member of the band. Queen decided to make the video emulating female characters in a British TV show back in 1984 as a gag... I'm pretty sure the ballet scene was Freddie's idea - he was a big fan of that art. And it was spandex, not nudity when doing the ballet scenes... it just made it easier to move and provocative visually...
Unfortunately, MTV America banned the video in 1984 because of the 'suggestive' drag video (but they still aired Ratt's video for 'Round & round ' which had actor Milton Berle in drag. Oh the hypocrisy!) and did not promote Queen in North America in the Reagan era where the AIDS epidemic was blamed on the LGBTQ population. Thus, the album 'The Works' was a commercial failure... Queen decided not to tour the US & Canada cos the record was a huge hit worldwide.
For all that Freddie was, this video was actually Roger's idea.
The middle part is taken from famous ballet " The afternoon of the Faun" from early 1900
Brad âIâm trying to not laughâ đ€Łđ
Glad you did this one. I had suggested it a few times.
This music video ended a lot of Queens career in the US pretty much. They dressed up as characters from the British soap opera Coronation Street but the US audience didn't know that reference so it all just seemed strange to the audience in the US so Queen didn't have any real hits in the US after this and they never toured the US after this either.
I wonder what people must do to catch even a single smile from Mr. COOL Brad!?
This is my favorite song, together with somebody to love
Freddie Mercury wasn't "out" while he was alive recording with Queen. Brad needs a high school Art Appreciation class to understand why sculptors and painters study human anatomy and not clothing to represent the human form.
I like the fact, that Freddie dressed like a woman has a mustache for more fun and in the middle section with royal ballet is without mustache . I love these guys
One of my fave queen songs đ¶ makes me just want to dance đ đ
The dance piece in the middle is a play on Nijinsky (ballet dancer) and Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun - Freddie plays the faun.
This group is so great because this song was composed by their bassist...John Deacon
I've seen the music video a few times, but only now realised how much Freddy looks like Croagunk when he does his random "HEY" or "YEAH!" as he stands side on with his right arm in frint of him.
Best band in the world. litterally.
Songs mean whatever you take from them. For me this is about all people stuck in bad situations with relationships, alcohol, drugs, society, etc.
It's not about being gay- it's so misunderstood. The bassist and others were watching the oldest soap on British TV, Coronation Street and it's really working class and the women at the time seem to be all housewives, while their husbands went out working in factories/pubs the women stayed at home were ironing shirts etc (that's just paraphrasing), Basically it about breaking free from your boring life. Notice that all members of the band are dressed up as women not just Freddy who was Bi not gay.
We Didn't Start The Fire - Billy Joel
Watching Americans react, and as an English man, in the UK, you two are the best I've seen. Keep it up, your great đ
The teas maid at the beginning those were great in the 80s
Everytime I saw the camera pointing towards Rogers skirt, I feel that he was going to have a mental breakdown LMAO. Poor Roger, but Freddie is a genius đđ
It's clear that we wants to "break free" from the chains
There's a fantastic documentary about the Ballet Russes who stormed Paris in 1909. "L'aprea midi d'un faun" a Debussy composition made into a ballet featuring the dancer Vasilav Nijinsky was about as controversial as you could get when it opened and this is what Freddie and the boys are giving a nod to here. Diaghilev's next production "The Rights of Spring", set to the music of Stravinsky, caused a riot. They definitely broke free.
Please do Pink Floyd SHINE ON YOU CRAZY DIAMOND.
When the movie came out, it made me fall in love with Queen all over again. Rock on Brad & Lex
"What in the world are they doing?"
That was awesome.
Grew up with my pops listening to this, saw that music video at like 7 years old & I had no idea what was going on đ
Hi there
The song is known for the band dressed in drag as a concept by drummer Roger Taylor, which parodied the British soap opera 'Coronation Street'.
The second part of the video is a composition performed with the Royal Ballet whereas the parody of cross-dressing acclaimed in the UK is a popular trope in British comedy and you see it in shows eg: "The Life of Brian" - "The Benny Hill Show" etc (remember it is 1984).
As most people presumed that it was about his sexual orientation but it's the furthest from the truth - Freddie was out but not public - As Elton John said "Nobody I have every met including myself have been so openly outrageous and sexually active with the wildest sex parties on earth"
Freddie poor Fredo - or he's birth name being Farsi (Persian are Iranian) is Farrokh was an extraordinary male vocalist with a wide range of 4 Octaves???? may I remind you Mariah Carey has 5 and the maximum a human has is 10
More Queen thanks, admire the insight into things Lex
The director and dance choreographer concluded that Freddy can't dance (which he tried to tell them earlier) so they re-wrote the script and had the dancers doing all the work. For example him rolling across a row dancers.
They realised he couldn't dance in 1979!
They thought he could and asked him to perform with them for a chatity event
So when they agreed to do this they knew he wouldn't be dancing!
You should watch the movie âBohemian Rhapsodyâ. It will give you a good look into Freddieâs personal struggles.
Fantastic movie
That movie TOTALLY "straightwashed" Freddie's life! GARBAGE!
âStraightwashing (also called hetwashing) is portraying LGB (lesbian, gay, bisexual) or otherwise queer characters in fiction as heterosexual (straight), making LGB people appear heterosexual, or altering information about historical figures to make their representation comply with heteronormativity.â
The movie absolutely did *not* do this.
@@martyscott3236 Pretty much did. Also played VERY loose with the timeline.
I am fascinated by how Lexâs mind works. In one song itâs very much about the sound, and in the next itâs deeply and richly introspective.
Queens "It's Late" is so dope, it should be illegal.
And "Who Needs You?"
#1 on my list of Queen tunes
Always laugh when I see John and Brian- they could be trying out for a Monty Python skit.
Freddie I love you so much, for who you were and I know you struggled with your sexuality, because in those times being gay wasn't as accepted as it is today. I wish you could live in today's world. You could have lived free, as you are. Amazing, talented, sexy, and gay. Your music will never die. It is timeless. RIP Freddie, you have a lot of people who still love you. I just wish you had acceptance when you were alive. I cried the day you died. I felt like I'd lost a part of my soul. In my heart, you live on. â€đą
Freddie said that one thing he didnât like about music videos is that is imposes an interpretation in peopleâs minds of what the song is about, which he felt detracted from the song. He wanted people to decide what the song means to them. And he never discussed what his songs were about. You will notice they did a lot of videos of them just âplayingâ the songs - My favorite is Breakthru.
I think the video is wonderful. Can u all hear his voice. When I first saw this video I was like wtf. Then I fell in love w it. Maybe cause they were all dressed up. They are free. And then I didn't even know they were the ones that made the song " we will rock u" wow. Awesome
The "cross-dressing" is just the members of Queen dressing up as their favourite characters from the British soap opera "Coronation Street".
Roger Taylor looks disturbingly good as a girl.
Freddie was going to shave his moustache, but said no keep it it will add to the humour! It certainly did đ rip Freddie
I love how they reenacted this in the Will Farrell figure skating flick "Blades of Glory"....
good stuff QUEEN
Art = Expression
The song was written by John Deacon. The video killed Queen in America.
So you decided to search for this song after hearing it at the store? That's friggin' awesome! I can't wait to see your reaction to The Show Must Go On. Freddie's vocals are in top form. There's also Innuendo, which demonstrates how he juxtaposed notes few others are capable of doing.
Quite possibly the highest IQ band ever formed...all pretty smart dudes
that song was banned from many radio stations in america back then.......that says somethingđ.
This was banned on MTV, when they actually played videos, For obvious reasons. John Deacon wrote this song,They all had writing abilities.

I was born in 81 and there are two songs that are sort of burned into my subconsious thats this song and Sultans of Swings by Dire Straits. I think my parents played Queen and Dire Straits quite a bit when i was a toddler :P
I like the art discussion. Your channel is prety cool guys!
The illuminated gadget at the beginning is a Goblin Teasmade, which woke you up with a hot drink. I have one, probably still usable, among our mountains of junk!
The look is very 1960s Coronation Street, but John's grumpy Granny looks like a character in Giles's daily newspaper cartoons, which also inspired the Hell's Grannies sketch in Monty Python's Flying Circus. Roger's schoolgirl is also more reminiscent of a Giles character than anyone in "Corrie".
The lines "I want to break free from your lies. You're so self-satisfied, I don't need you" in connection with the miners (so "Metropolis"!) could be taken in this case to refer to the militant union leaders and Tory politicians who prolonged the bitter 1984 strike, which lasted a year and gained the miners nothing. The British coalmining industry collapsed soon afterwards.
This young lady understands Freddie very well
