Freddie's last work was on Made In Heaven album, finished after he died and released in 95. Having said this Obvs he was not well during the Innuendo album as well.
+ Bri was only able to see many years later that he was writing this about Freddie, though fundamentally it is about a clown.
Please stop pausing Queen, they don't block, keep the analysis till the end. It affects how you hear the song to pause.

@@bluebell3720 Yes. If you want to hear how he sounded months before he passed check out "Mother Love", "You Don't Fool Me", and "A Winter's Tale". The vocals from those songs were recorded about 6 months before he passed.

It was one of the last songs Freddie Mercury completed before his death in 1991... it was a 'goodbye' song cos Queen knew that the band was over once Freddie was gone. They finished recording 2 albums - 'The Miracle' in 1989 and 'Innuendo' in 1991... Freddie appeared in the music video for 'These are the days of our lives' and it was his final appearance on camera. By that point, he was thin, frail and could hardly move like he used to... his mustache was gone.
'The show must go on' was released as a single in the fall of 1991 as he was on his deathbed. It was chosen as the final single deliberately and closed the 'Innuendo' album. Freddie passed away in November.

"These are the days of our lives" I can't get through that video, or song in general, without bawling my eyes out. Freddie was one of a kind. Doing what he loved, until he couldn't anymore, is truly an inspiration. The show must go on.

May recalls; "I said, 'Fred, I don't know if this is going to be possible to sing.' And he went, 'I'll fucking do it, darling'-vodka down-and went in and killed it, completely lacerated that vocal".

I love this song written by Brian. He never intended to have Freddie sing this song because this was when Freddie was already very sick. This was Brian feeling the impending loss of the band as Freddie's health kept deteriorating. Freddie kept coming into the studio asking for stuff to sing and that the rest could do whatever they wanted later with the tracks, so Brian gave Freddie this one. Freddie really kills this song as does the rest of the band.

Yes, this is about Freddie trying to keep going despite his illness. He just wanted to make music until the end. The video is all clips used to best make sense with the lyrics because Freddie was too sick to make any more videos (you're right). There are so many videos and songs you have yet to react to. Many more videos than were shown. It's about both - the show must go on until Freddie's death, as well as after Freddie's death. One of my favourite lyrics is here - "my soul is painted like the wings on butterflies". Now butterflies make me think of Freddie đŠâ€

Both Freddie and my mom passed away the same year.

Brian may ( guitar player) wrote this , about freddy being sick , apparently freddy sang it in one take .. he was very sick they did it to keep him busy . His very last song or day of work was a song / video. ( days of our lives) he looked very bad in that or thin and weak . He was sitting during the video.

The Show Must Go On" came from Roger and John playing the sequence, and I started to put things down. At the beginning, it was just this chord sequence, but I had this strange feeling that it could be somehow important, and I got very impassioned and went and beavered away at it. I sat down with Freddie, and we decided what the theme should be and wrote the first verse. It's a long story, that song, but I always felt it would be important because we were dealing with things that were hard to talk about at the time, but in the world of music, you could do it.[9]

the bridge was inspired by Pachelbels canon which seems more Freddie than Brian
in an other interview he said they spent the afternoon together completed the first verse and had enough material to finish the last two verses which implies they had done more than just the first verse

Freddie didn't actually sing the WHOLE song in one take; that's a common misconception. When Brian was talking about Freddie singing in-one-take, he was specifically talking about the really HIGH part near the end of the song. Brian was afraid the high notes would hurt Freddie's throat. Fred said "I'll F____g do it, Darling!"... he took a drink of vodka and then sang the high part all in one take.
His very last song (as in vocal performance) was "Mother Love", recorded between 13-16 May 1991, and released in 1995. As Brian explains it, they recorded the first two verses but when they got to the last verse "he [Freddie] said 'I'm not up to this, and I need to go away and have a rest, I'll come back and finish it off...' and he never came back". Brian sang the final verse himself. Days of our Lives was his last video though. :)
This is my favourite Queen song of all time!!!One of the last songs Freddie sang, it was written about his illness and how no matter how they felt 'The Show Must Go On'

This song always moves me to tears, the defiance in his voice, refusing to give in meekly to the inevitable, prepared to give his all, to his last breath almost, doing what he was put on this Earth to do. Simply amazing. He knew it was a battle he couldnât win but he was most definitely not going to go gentle into the good night rather he was raging against the dying of the light. Apologies for my rather clumsy paraphrasing of Dylan Thomas, but thatâs essentially what I take from the song and performance.

It was absolutely a finale song, so Lex you are spot on with your analysis.

And the song was recorded in 1990 as was the rest of the Innuendo album. Three tracks that ended up on Made in Heaven were the last ones Freddie recorded in 1991.
One of the most powerful songs they do live, even until this day.

Freddie Mercury was larger than life... his presence on stage like no other, this song brings a tear to my eye for what was lost . At least I can say I saw him in the flesh doing what no other could do...
I love this Haunting Song, it takes me right back to being a 19 year old. I had only months earlier started a job as a housekeeper at a local hotel, that job lasted 10 years. We were allowed to watch television during our work days so long as it did not interfere with our work. MTV was a huge part of my life at the time being that it was heavily about music. On Nov 23, 1991 Freddie Mercury announced to the world that he was suffering from AIDS, the rumors were true. On Nov 24th it was anounced that Freddie had succumbed to the illness.
I still remember having to sit down and take it all in. It was a somber day that I will always remember. This song had been realeased about a month before, it will always stand as a bookmark to me, of that point in time.

This song still makes me cry after 30 years. Fred knew his HIV had progressed to full blown AIDS and that his time was almost up. Even so, he POWERED this vocal out and delivered a final masterpiece and his farewell to us all. God, I'm in tears typing this, we love you Freddie, and we miss you every day. I think you have to watch and listen to "These are the days of our lives" to see Freddie at the end, when he is frail and hardly able to stand but able at the end to look into the camera and say to the world "I still love you" a truly heart breaking moment
Yes that was his "goodbye" video to the fans. There's behind the scenes clips of that video which are colorized and you can tell that would be his last performance.
My advice is to keep ...Days of Our Lives...until you've seen everything else. It's heartbreaking and once seen, is difficult to forget. You'll get to it, but don't be in a hurry.
Always felt like Freddie's farewell and it was superbly moving, especially when seeing him at his frailest.
I remember seeing Queen near the beginning, Seven Seas Of Rhye had just been released, and I followed their journey to the end. Their songs in the final months of Freddies life were powerful and sad with perhaps the saddest being the final one Mothers Love. A great great band the likes of which will never be seen again.
I remember hearing this sone when he passed and its quite heartbreaking with Freddie knowing and also singing that "Ill soon be turning around the corner now". If what people here in the comments write is true that he was so frail when recording this it certainly isnt noticable since no one could ever have done it better and you can really feel it is for real and not just any old song.
When they recorded this, Freddie was so ill he was propped up against a console desk. Brian May thought the vocals might be too hard to actually manage (Adam lambert has said itâs their hardest track), Freddie apparently said âFĂ»ck it, Iâll do it darlingâ, downed a large vodka then went for it. He sounds amazing and itâs my favourite song of all time.
I was lucky enough to see Queen twice and Freddie was the ultimate performer. Was in my top three concerts I've been to.
Freddie was ill he had good days and not so good days, Brian May the lead guitarist approached Freddie and said Iâve written a new song do you think youâre well enough to sing, Freddie replied yes darling and took a drink of Vodka and sang the song in one take, Freddie always wanted to make songs until he was unable to sing anymore! You have to watch "Love of my life" the live version. He has the crowd singing with him. The thousands of people all at the same time, it was magical.
The song is picture of Freddie's life. Inside he was sick and dying but he still always put on the smile and carried on being Freddie Mercury until the end. If you watch the video for These are the days of our lives it will break your heart. Seeing what is just a shell of the man that Aids destroyed. I have to admit it scared the shit out of me. It really made me take a look at my own risky behavior and change my life. So thank you Freddie. Your life made a difference and your suffering was not in vain. Many of us who were paying attention got the message loud and clear.

Not just the end of his career- the end of his life- amazing he had the strength the even do this- the final song he was able to complete before his passing- church out the song AND VIDEO of âDays of our life..â And then.. âMother Loveâ, đ-in which he went til he literally no longer could..and just could not make it back to finish the final verse ..which I believe it was Brian May finished for him- and then not long at all after.. Brian May is such a great songwriter. There is so much feeling in his songs and of course, Freddie is the perfect (passionate) instrument to deliver the song. I agree with a commentator below that there will never be a band like Queen again. 4 truly talented musicians with such great chemistry live. Their voices (Freddie, Brian & Roger) blended so perfectly together. Rogers' Days of Our Lives was written for his kids, but when Freddie sings it, it becomes his vehicle to acknowledge the fans one more time--so touching.
Freddie WAS The Greatest Showman! He put everything into his performances. His heart, his soul, his blood, his sweat his tears. Everything. Even when he knew he was a goner, he put the last of himself into this. And he did it al for us. His fans. His Show Must Go On, even after he's gone.

Freddie was in bad health and dying when this was recorded so Queen opted to use footage from all their past music videos and live performances for this official music video. Itâs definitely one of the last few goodbye songs Freddie Mercury sang in his last months. Great reactions! If you want to see a great recapturing of all Queenâs old music videos, you should react to Freddie Mercuryâs solo video for âThe Great Pretenderâ. Itâs part of his solo work he done in between Queenâs albums. He recreates all of Queenâs popular videos and the 4 or 5 solo album videos too.
This song was from the last album recorded in Freddie's lifttime, but Freddie was recording songs on his deathbed, a few years later. "Made in Heaven", a decent farewelll album for the band with old recording from all of them in their solo days. Of course there were new songs too though.
The story goes that Freddie was effectively on his deathbed when this was recorded. Brian May went to him and asked if he'd do it, but that he didn't have to; Freddie slammed some vodka, apparently saying something to the effect of 'of course I'll do it, darling', and recorded the entire track in one go.
He wasn't on his deathbed, but he did have to pace himself to record the album. He wasn't on his deathbed until around the fall of 1991 when he effectively was bed ridden. Before that he could move around and do things, albeit on a limited basis.

When asked about what would he like to happen to his legacy, and his reply was typically Freddie.

It breaks my heart to know how sick he was and still gave it all... , never expecting any pity, just wanted to do what he loved till the end., showed us how strong the human spirit can be....Forever in our hearts.â€ïž
He was very sick when he recorded this that he could barely stand up. The others weren't sure if he even would be able to do it. Freddie said "I'll fucking do it, darling.", downed some vodka and, as you can hear, killed it. Brian May, the guitarist, wrote the song about what Freddie was going through. It's my absolute favorite Queen song and imo the best he ever did vocally. Amazing how he could sound like that when he was so sick. â€â€â€
Mercury made the show go on. He knew he was dying but didn't want anyone to know. He wanted to keep on singing because that's what his purpose was. To sing. To keep the fans happy. The ultimate artist he was, right til the end.

Queen did the soundtrack for "The Highlander" in 1985, and some of the footage is from that movie. You should watch it, because as Ricky Bobby famously said, it won the Academy Award for The Greatest Movie Ever.

Yes It was, you're right lex ...he was already very ill and did not want to be seen in a video...Brian was worried that he wouldn't be able to hit the high notes to the song he had written...Freddie gulped down a shot of vodka and said I'll do it daring...Brian wrote this song from Freddie's point of view , about what he was going thrueg. "I'm getting warmer now, I'll soon be turning round the corner now"...so sad...a brave soul -never complained about his demise

Yea, if anything was ever a goodbye song, this would be the one.
Freddie performed this song and "Who wants to live forever" like a couple of weeks before he died.
Such an amazing artist and such a voice.
He was very ill towards the end and in really bad shape, his body had basically just withered away and he looked really fragile...
But it didnt put a single dent in his voice, his last performances were as magnificent as he always made them.
Its absolutely unreal how he could performe like that in that condition.
The true form of a legend, "The show must go on".
Its so sad.
But at least we get to live in a world and time where he did once exist and all the masterpieces he left behind.

Freddie Mercury and Michael Jackson will always remain two of the biggest names in music history to me. The kind of charisma and on stage presence these two legends had was simply extraordinary.

Freddie Mercury sang this song after a shot of vodka while on death's door in one take. It was the band's good buy to him and they didn't know if he was able to sing anything they could use, but Freddie wanted to keep recording so while he was in the hospital they lived in the recording studio so they could be ready if he came in.
This was his last song, he havnt enaf strenght to do all video, so other members decide to make mix video from last performances and spots, and Freeie give just his live vocal. Freddie was great singer and human... Great persona...

It was not only toward the end of Freddy's career, but he was already well aware that AIDS was taking his life. This was one of the last songs he ever recorded, and his bandmates have said in interviews that they weren't sure he was going to be able to actually sing (as he looked so frail and ill).

It is almost unbelievable what freddie was capable of with his voice when he was already very ill. I am always impressed by his strength, determination and perseverance listening to this song. "I have to find the will to carry on" and Freddie has found it, he sang, sang and sang until he could, Mother Love was his last recorded song, but he couldn't finish it. He was a musician and performer from top to toe.
Also, Brian said when it came to record this song that he was concerned that Freddie couldn't manage the vocals as he was sick. When he mentioned this to him, Freddie took a shot of vodka and said, " I'll fucking do it, darling" and performed an amazing vocal piece... True story.
There is one more Studio Album For Queen" Made in Heaven " .Freddie worked on some of the Vocal and the band finished and released the album years later...
This makes me cry because it was such a loss when Freddie died and i feel like this was his message for us who carried along with life after he left.
Some people are a bit confused on the timeline of Freddie's last year of his life. This song and the Innuendo album were recorded in 1990, but it was not the last tracks Freddie recorded. He recorded three more tracks, really two and a half because he wasn't able to finish one of them, in the spring of 1991 that appeared on the Made in Heaven album. Those tracks are the last ones he ever recorded. It is true The Show Must Go On was intended to be a "goodbye" for the fans, but Freddie was able to make a couple of videos in 1900/1991 including "These Are the Days of Our Lives" which was his way of telling us the fans goodbye. This mashup video was made after Freddie died.
His music will go on and on, Queen impress every generation, they had it all and all of them could write a hit song.
The last video Freddie did with Queen was THESE ARE THE DAYS OF OUR LIVES and very last song Freddie recorded was MOTHER LOVE, Freddie felt ill, told Brian he'd come back to finish it, but passed before it was completed, Brian sang last verse
Brian May's guitar is one of the most distinctive sounds in rock. and he has a ph.d. in astrophysics. That must be a seriously interesting guy to have a beer with.
His true âgoodbyeâ was the video & song âDays of Our Livesâ. It is truly a heartbreaking video because he died shortly after recording the video and he gives his goodbye to his fans at the end of video.

Freddie was really sick when they recorded this. He battled through with some hard liquor and didn't do all that many takes on this. He was a trooper and wanted the band to use him as long as they could. In some of the last pictures and videos, he is but skin and bone, but he was still able to sing like an angel...

Great reaction, it wasn't the end of his career, it was the end of Freddie's life, the words "I must be warmer now, I'll soon be turning, round the corner now, outside the dawn is breaking but inside in the dark I'm aching to be free". The poignant of the words "I'll soon be turning the corner" depicts that Freddie knew the end was near and "he was okay with that" and was ready to turn that corner .... and the words "outside the dawn is breaking but inside in the dark I'm aching to be free" ... when Freddie was ill the press/paparazzi wouldn't leave Freddie alone and even tried to take pictures of him in bed by climbing up trees near his bedroom window/balcony at Garden Lodge ... they just wouldn't leave him alone as obviously he didn't tell his fans/the public he had AIDS until 24 hours before he died, and because of the way he had lost so much weight the press/paparazzi would come up with any story about him, including AIDS, and so he felt trapped and couldn't get outside for dawn to break .... he was so so so so brave and was concerned more at his friend's feelings when they visited him. Unfortunately, Queen never got to perform this beautiful song live as there just simply wasn't enough time before they lost Freddie, hence the compilation of all different videos/concert pictures/studio pictures etc. RIP Freddie Mercury my hero. You were and still are a LEGEND in EVERY sense of the word. Rest easy my dear xxxx
They did a compilation of music videos because they made this song a few months before his death and it was easier to just do a tribute video to him.
Lex is spot on. He died not long after recording this and yes, it is his Swan Song. He KNOWS that he is dying, but people still want to see and hear him perform so he puts on a smile, fakes his happiness and does the show despite how sick he is. I understand completely. I may not be a famous singer, but I AM terminally ill. People don't want to hear about it or discuss my plans for what to do when I pass. They want to pretend that everything is going to be okay, so I gave up trying and just slap on a smile and do my best to "be the same old me" when they are around because that's the only way to have a relatively calm and peaceful time together. They don't want to hear about how it sometimes hurts so bad that despite the heavy medication, it takes everything I have just to walk from the bed to the bathroom just a few feet away. It's a terrible experience to have your doctor look you in the eye and not only say that you are dying, but that there is nothing they can do to stop it or even slow it down. No, I don't have AIDS like he did, but it doesn't matter what the disease is once you are diagnosed. It has taken me a while to come to terms with the fact that I am dying and to simply accept the facts as they stand and not dwell on how I wish it would be. Freddie was in the same situation, only far more publicly. He knew he was dying, but refused to stop doing what he loved... and so the show must go on
Brian May (Queen guitarist) wrote this in early 1991 as Freddie was severely sick with AIDS but had not gone public with being sick. He showed song to Freddie and said he understood if Freddie wasn't feeling well enough. Freddie said "Let's do it" anwas realed poured down a whiskey and recorded it perfectly in one take. The single was realesed in October 1991, Freddie died in November.

The Show Must Go On" came from Roger and John playing the sequence, and I started to put things down. At the beginning, it was just this chord sequence, but I had this strange feeling that it could be somehow important, and I got very impassioned and went and beavered away at it. I sat down with Freddie, and we decided what the theme should be and wrote the first verse. It's a long story, that song, but I always felt it would be important because we were dealing with things that were hard to talk about at the time, but in the world of music, you could do it.[9]

the bridge was inspired by Pachelbels canon which seems more Freddie than Brian
in an other interview he said they spent the afternoon together completed the first verse and had enough material to finish the last two verses which implies they had done more than just the first verse

Freddie Mercury, Brian May, Roger Taylor, and John Deacon put together such BEAUTIFUL music. Timing, sounds, vocals, different sounding solos from the average bands. John Deacons' Bass playing is insanely underrated.

I remember vividly when I heard that he had passed. I was working nights and went into the break room at 6:30am (nobody else in the building) when MTV announced that he had died and then they followed with this video. I still get choked up when I hear it and I think of that moment.
Great song and a fitting ending for Freddy, Queen's greatest strength may have been their songwriting and composition which is right up there with any of the greats.
