BB Adult in Ortho-k for the right eye, and Special lens for Keratoconus in the left eye. B"H.

BB came to our office with a somewhat unique and complicated circumstance. His right eye was very nearsighted. His left eye has Keratoconus. Keratoconus is an eye condition where the cornea, the front part of the eye is distorted. "Kera" is Latin for cornea, and "Conus" is Latin for shaped like a "cone".
He wore a soft lens in his Right eye, prescribed to enable him to see at near. He wore a gas permeable corneal lens (sometimes called a Hard lens) in his Left eye. That was prescribed to enable him to see at distance. That is called Monovision: one eye for distance and one eye for near.
He saw clearly at distance with that left lens, but since the left cornea was distorted, the lens moved a lot, and that is why it was uncomfortable.
Despite the fact that the lens for the right eye was set for reading, he still had to wear eyeglasses over the contact lenses for reading.
He was interested in Orthokeratology.
Ultimately, we prescribed orthokeratology for the right eye and a Scleral lens for the left eye.
Orthokeratology is a process that reshapes the cornea while you sleep.
The Scleral lens sits on the white part of the eye, rather than on the cornea, and that is why the left is now more comfortable.
This treatment enabled him to see clearly with BOTH eyes, so he is now able to drive more comfortably. The added benefit was that he also did not need eyeglasses to see at near.
This somewhat personalized approach solved his problem and enabled him to see clearly and comfortably. We listened, and devised a plan that was customized for him, and solved his vision and comfort issues.
