  • JC has Guillain-Barre. He had been referred to our office by an Occupational Therapist at a major Rehabilitation Hospital.
Guillain-Barre syndrome is a rare disorder in which the body's immune system attacks the nerves. It manifests first with hand and feet weakness and tingling, and this can spread to paralyzing the entire body. The exact cause of Guillain-Barre syndrome is unknown, but 2/3 of patients report symptoms of an infection in the 6 weeks preceding. These include a COVID-19, respiratory or a gastrointestinal infection or Zika virus. There's no known cure for Guillain-Barre syndrome, but several treatments can ease symptoms and reduce the duration of the illness.
JC was admitted to the hospital on 1/5/23. He was seen in our office on 2/9/23. He had been in the hospital for 7 days and then at a rehabilitation hospital for 3 weeks. "The right side of my face was paralyzed and 90% of body (was also paralyzed). I was not able to see correctly because the muscles in my right eye did not work. I was transferred (from the hospital to a rehab hospital) for therapy and I was there for 3 weeks. The left side started having problems, caused by Bells Palsy. I have 20/20 (with each eye) and I switched the eyepatch from side to side. I saw double if I did not patch one eye. I have double vision especially when I turn to my right. I haven't been able to read. My eye is sensitive to light when watching TV, and I start tearing. I can't focus. I can't watch TV. Sunlight bothers me. I want to see normal."
He had special testing in our office to determine exactly where his two eyes misaligned in various positions of gaze. We were then able to compare this "before" and "after" therapy in our office. We placed compensating prism on distance eyeglasses, as a short term treatment, and he was able to see single again.
We began Syntonic Phototherapy on 2/28/23. He used very specific special filters 10 minutes each day. At his progress visit 2 weeks later he said: "I was walking my dog this morning, and it was much better without the eyeglasses than last week". This indicated that he was starting to regain the use of his two eyes together as a team an needed less prism to compensate for the eye turn. "Now I see everything the way it is supposed to be. Before, I would see on the right side, what was on the left, and what was on the left side, i saw on my right. When I look straight, it's not a problem, but when I look to either side, it is distorted. I started driving again. This was the 1st time since January 5th". He became very emotional in the exam chair.
He was seen 2 weeks after that, and his wife said: "He's able to drive now". "I am able to watch TV now, like a normal person. I am able to get back to most of my normal life. I no longer see double. I still have tremors in my arms, but its less. I no longer need to use my eyeglasses for distance. I am 99.95% back to normal. I drove on the highway again, recently. I am ready to get back to work, driving a school bus. My endurance is way better. I am so happy to be back to normal. My PCP gave me the OK to return to driving on April 15.
We stopped the Syntonic Phototherapy at that point. The options he now has are: begin Neuro-Optometric Rehabilitation, or return to office in 6-12 weeks, or sooner if starts to feel breakdown.
In light of the fact that he drives for a living, I suggested that he return to the rehab hospital for a driving test.
I am so happy that we were able to help JC through Syntonic Phototherapy, and that he no longer sees double. He is able to continue to return to living his life productively.
Syntonic Phototherapy has been in existence for nearly 100 years, although not many doctors know about it or how to prescribe it. I was fortunate to learn from an expert and am gratified that I did so and am able to help patients in ways that I was not able to do so in the past. With Syntonic Phototherapy we are able to help people who have conditions that medications and other therapies have limited benefits.
